High winds brought down a large eucalyptus tree that snapped and brought down three power poles. Its affecting about 400 customers at indiana and santa clara streets and making matters worse, theres been no water because the nearby water station has no electricity. We got to try to buy food. Weve got to try to get a room. We cant stay here like this. Its brought in occasional crews to expedite repairs. More than 150,000 customers lost power since the first storm friday. Here are the current outage numbers. Most of the trouble is now in the north bay. They had to bring out the heavy equipment today to clean up a big mud slide in santa cruz. Tons of mud a tree, power line all came down across that road. Highway 9 near waterman gap is expected to remain closed until tomorrow morning. Kpix 5s devon in santa cruz with the latest for us. All afternoon weve seen cars come up to the intersection behind me and have to make a detour because of those road closure signs and people who live in this area say its a major headache and hassle. Reporter call it the after effect of this weekends wet weather. Flares mark a stretch of highway 9 in the santa cruz mountains, closed after a landslide sent a mountain of dirt cascading on to the road. Drivers say the road closure is a major inconvenience. Its going to add another half hour to your day at least and you have to know of the other detours. Reporter heavy rains and gusting winds toppled a tree under the same stretch of highway 9, although cal trans crews were able to quickly remove the downed tree from the road. Tractors working in tandem began to quickly clear away the dirt from the landslide. Although they also have to ensure the hill slide is stable before reopening the road. You have to know the alternate route and you have to know its going to take you longer to get to work or wherever youre going some percentage of the year. We have land slides, snow, car accidents. All these things can close the road. Getting that hillside stabilized is the x factor in all of this. Cal trans estimates the road could remain closed for a total of 24 to 36 hours. In the santa cruz mountains. Chain saws are being heard all over the bay area as crews are cleaning up after the storm. Workers were out before dawn clearing away this tree that came down on buena vista way in berkeley. Fortunately nobody hurt and no Property Damage from that one. A driver accused of hitting and killing a woman during a street race in san jose faced a judge today. 18yearold Gabriel Esparza faces vehicular manslaughter charge. He did not enter a plea. Police say he was going 70 Miles Per Hour when they lost control of their cars on yerba buena road last month. One of the cars hit 24yearold pavla who was out jogging. Someone died. Whether he was a witness or involved in this unfortunate incident resulting in the death of this young lady, he certainly feels a great deal of remorse, as does his family. The family was not it at the hearing. The defense asked them to stay away after he called his codefendant a murderer last month in court. Theyll be back in court next month. Oakland police trying to track down this man suspected of sexually assaulting a 10yearold boy last month. Hes described as hispanic, 40 to 50 years old.
