New at 5 00, a couple of big rig crashes have snarled traffic at the start of the afternoon commute. A truck hauling dirt on southbound highway 101 in Santa Clara County overturned near alum rock. The front tire on the big rig blew out causing it to slam into the stra divide and then turn over. It happened just after 1 00. Oil and dirt were spilled over several lanes of traffic. Firefighters worked to get the driver out. He was stuck for 20 minutes before being rescued. All lanes reopened 30 minutes ago. Just an hour later a big rig overturned on southbound 880 in oakland under 23rd avenue overpass. It was hauling trailers. The driver was taken to the hospital for minor injuries after hitting the overpass. Its causing a decent backup along the nimitz freeway. After a rescue, the family of a 4yearold boy who fell from a cliff is hoping for another miracle. His recovery. Rescue teams found that boy who survived a more than 200foot drop at bodega head monday night. Now more anxious moments for his family. Our ryan takeo spoke with the boys father who says the coming days will tell what kind of recovery he really needs to make. Ryan. Reporter thats right, allen. There are concerns of brain damage possible brain damage anyway. Doctors dont know for sure if thats going to be a problem or how severe it might be. The good news is, the boy is out of the coma. Reporter the family went for a picnic monday. Sebastian and his mom were throwing rocks when he slipped 230 feet down a cliff. Miraculously, crews rescued the 4yearold alive, conscious and crying. Other bay area headlines, a scuba team found the body of a San Jose National guard airman who was swept into the ocean while fishing near carmel. The 24yearold was pulled off the rocks by strong waves. He is the second person to swept off the rocks in less than a month. Were learning more about the convicted felon who was shot and killed by officers in concord last night. 28yearold jose avalos was wanted for multiple felonies and was already on probation. Last night avalos attempted to carjack two vehicles in the parking lot of willows shopping center. He was successful on a third try and crashed that stolen vehicle into a police car. Thats when officers opened fire killing avalos. A geyser of water made a mess in downtown walnut creek overnight. Water gushed down the road for more than an hour before crews were able to fix the pipe. Tonight a robot lander is alive and well on the surface of a comet and sending back its first pictures. Reporter yeah, liz. The problem is the landers position on the comet. It basically ended up in heavily shadowed terrain and runs on solar panels and it may not be getting enough sunlight to recharge its batteries for an extended operation. But heres the good news. For now, the lander is communicating with its parent spacecraft. Its even tweeting these photos. One is captioned the view is absolutely breathtaking. Unlike anything i have ever seen. Now that im safely on the ground, heres what my new home looks like. And we are learning what happened in the landing. The anchors that needed to hold the lander failed to fire and it ended up a half mile away from the original spot. It bounced. Now we are on the surface. That surface appears to be a jagged cliff where the lander is stilted to its side on a pile of dusty rocks. The hope was it could use its drill to dig samples from the comets surface but the lander is only getting an hour and a half of sunlight each day and needs six or seven hours to recharge those batteries. And this nice juicy storm that will be developing over the next couple of days is going to keep that off to our west not allowing it to make it here so as the ridge comes over the pacific northwest, well stay dry here in the bay area all the way through the weekend. Next week, the latest computer models information says the ridge is going to move a bit enough that that low will get closer to us. But it likely will not be tapping into the tropical moisture.
