We are having an earthquake. Hold on. The 6. 9 quake struck during game 3 at the world series at candlestick park. 15 seconds of shaking claimed 63 lives and left 3700 people injured. The damage from collapsed roads, bridges and homes topped 6 billion. And for the folks who were there, the images are still fresh. I was in a muni bus on the embarcadero. I thought the bus driver was being careless. He ran over a curb. I looked over in the parking lot and the buses over there were dancing we could walk up the hill near our house in southern marin and see the fire in the marina. It was just an incredible thing. Sort of surreal. The collapse of oaklands cypress freeway killed 42 people. Today a Memorial Park sits at the site in west oakland. 880 was relocated. For a home, that meant using glue, additional screws and extra thick sheetrock for the interior walls. Mesh and screws on the outside before stucco is put on. Both techniques are primarily for new construction. Retrofitting would be expensive. But considering San Franciscos now notifying owners of the so called soft story buildings that they must make quake safety improvements, he says it would be worth it. The city of San Francisco wants to avoid having thousands of people that dont have a place to live after an earthquake because its a tremendous Economic Loss to the community, to the city as a whole. For new construction, professor miranda estimates the sliders and unibody designs would add 10,000 to eachome which could be more than made up for in insurance and repair costs.
