Well, there should be no disruption for court cases in napa despite the major structural damage to the historic courthouse. The city says the building will be closed until further notice when it undergoes structural testing for analysis. Its only the east end of the courthouse that seems to be severely damaged from what im hearing. Thats not firsthand information. But it may be that parts of the building will return to use while the east end is being repaired. The city says it could be one to two years before repairs on the courthouse are completed. In the meantime, all the Court Proceedings have been moved to the new criminal courts building which is on 3rd street. New at 5 00 a coast guard officer at full uniform busted driving drunk on his way to work. He is not the only one. Two senior officials facing dui charges tonight. Kpix 5s linda yee live at the coast guard station on Yerba Buena Island. Both men still on the job, linda . Reporter yes, they are. In fact, one does have different duties. But these are both high security jobs here at the coast guard station on Yerba Buena Island but whats more disturbing is that both jobs involve Navigation Safety. Chief petty officer Michael Padgett was in uniform and reporting for duty when the chp stopped him one mile from the coast guard gate at Yerba Buena Island. In his report the officer said he smelled a strong odor of alcohol. And i notice his eyes were red and watery and his speech was slurred. As padgett walked i noticed he had an unsteady gait. Padgett measured. 18 on a breath test more than twice the legal limit. We caught up with padgett and his marin county home. Thats in litigation. Reporter whats disturbing padgett is a command duty officer responsible for dispatching boats and aircraft, coordinating law enforcement, and searchandrescue operations. In a statement, the coast guard says, it has a strict policy on alcohol abuse. Chief padgett was temporarily removed from his duties as soon as the coast guard was made aware of this incident. Im working and im going through the criminal process, everything. Reporter five days before padgett was arrested, another coast guard officer was also arrested for driving drunk. According to a Brentwood Police report obtained by kpix 5, chief petty officer Warren Weatherford admitted he had been drinking. He measured. 14 on the breath test. He remains on duty managing the team responsible for Navigation Safety of every commercial vessel moving in the San Francisco bay region. That includes making sure ships do not collide with the bay bridge. In 2007, a boat crashed into the bridge. The tugboat captain was convicted of dui in the case. The coast guard continues its internal investigation. The bottom line policy any member of the coast guard convicted of a dui faces discharge. I think nobody wants to view their police force as an occupying force. Reporter the vehicles were designed to help Army Soldiers survive ied and sniper attacks in iraq and afghanistan. But they became war surplus and the government has been giving them to cities to use for law enforcement. Antioch, south San Francisco and redwood city have accepted them for police use. Whats gotten lost, i think in calling it an Armored Vehicle that somehow people think this is an armed vehicle. Its not theres no tank cannons sticking out on the end of this. Reporter the San Jose Police union says the department had a kneejerk reaction to the National Furor over the militarization of police. Jim says the vehicle shouldnt be used for crowd control but be available for armed confrontations and hostage rescue situations. This is a very, very large heavy suv type vehicle thats designed to keep the occupants safe from bombs and gunfire. Reporter san jose only had its vehicle for a few months. A passenger refused to remove those clips which prevent the reclining of the seat back and the woman in front of him threw a glass of water in his face. Both were taken off the plane. Reporter as summer barbecue season begins to wind down, prices at the Grocery Store seem to be skyrocketing. For instance, the price of beef is up 10 since last year. Pork prices are run nearly 13 prompt are up nearly 13 prompting people to choose chicken for the end of summer barbecue. High grain prices and the drought are largely to blame for the increasing price of beef while a disease with a rather unappetizing name is killing millions of pigs and increasing the price of pork. Diseased trees in florida have increased the price of citrus by more than 17 . But general Drought Conditions have increased the price of fruits and veggies overall. For the first time a new survey shows more than a third of people who make over 6 figures are now saying the price of food is impacting their bottom line. Add it all up and from veggies to cheese to beef your average burger could cost more than 1. 70 more than this time last year. The usda predicts prices will continue to increase by as much as 3. 5 this year which has some switching to leaner cuts of meat. Or mixing in fillers like portobello mushrooms into the burgers.
