Where the roads are still closed. Mark. Reporter elizabeth, its been quite a day on highway 17. We are now nine hours after this accident and as you can see, the northbound lanes of highway 17 are still closed. The latest word we have from the chp is they are hoping to finish up this work and get these lanes open by 6 00 this evening. This is an accident that claimed one life and sent 7 people to the hospital. From chopper 5, the wide area of destruction is clear. The chp says a big rig hauling a double trailer fully loaded with dirt lost control coming down from the summit. In all, the Chain Reaction crash involved 10 cars in addition to the big rig. His brakes began to smoke coming down the hill. They became not working properly based upon the fact that they heated up. So he experienced brake fade coming down the 6 grade approximately. Reporter the chp says the driver of the truck then reached an area of traffic that was slowing day to the morning commute northbound into silicon valley. Was unable to control his speed, at which time he started hitting vehicles and the guardrail. Reporter at 3 30 this afternoon, crews finally started towing some of the vehicles which were involved in the crash. But it was a long day for commuters who spent hours sitting in traffic as the chp divided the remaining lanes so one lane of traffic could pass in each direction. Some even set off on foot. You can actually walk around the accident if you leave someone in the car and you wanted to get picked up from black road, you can have, you know, the rest of your party essentially walk around the accident and, you know, get a carpool or lift from the next exit. Reporter we are understanding that we have some commute traffic coming up in front of us. Were going to warn everybody to try to stay away from highway 17 if they can. Back to a live picture, this is the northbound lanes of highway 17. At this point investigators have not determined if the fault lies with the driver or perhaps if the vehicle actually had some kind of mechanical problem in addition to riding those brakes. The fatality has been identified as a 26yearold man from santa cruz. Reporting live alongside highway 17, just north of the summit, im mark sayre, kpix 5. Authorities confirm the big rig is from the sany Brothers Trucking company out of tracy that opened in may of this year and has never had an inspection which isnt unusual because it takes a while to complete.
