The pope valley fire burns for a second day in napa county. 200 homes have been forced to evacuate. And flames have grown to 5 square miles. Thats 3800 acres. Its now 30 contained, but weather has helped firefighters gain some ground today. Kpix 5s Juliette Goodrich takes us to the front lines. Juliette. Reporter liz, the weather helped overnight, but i have to tell you, just in the last hour, the shifting winds are making this firefight extremely challenging. In any event, case in point, right behind me shoulder this hillside just started flaring up again. And homeowners nearby are really rolling the dice deciding not to evacuate. From the ground look at that. Reporter to the air, fighting the butts fire has been tough to tackling. Hundreds of people evacuated, except ron. He isnt leaving. Its like a war zone out here. Reporter he says he is staying put. That way it came right down to the houses. Reporter but you decided to stay . Thats it. Decided to stay. Reporter wendy has been checking the hillside hour by hour all day, all night. Very unnerving when you consider our house is just on the other side of the hill. It is very frightening. Reporter just as fast as firefighters knock out one spot fire, another flares up. And the shifting winds make the butt fire seemingly untameable at times. Access to hot spots can be treacherous by ground. We learned that firsthand. This rancher taking us up a private access road to get a closer look. Behind me is ground zero where the fire started. You can see essentially by those solar panels. It quickly moved north and then over the ridge and then jumped over roadways. This smoke and charred filled canyon parched by drought conditions, were looking at what could be a summerlong firefight throughout the state. Big gardner says he will pack up and leave when need be. He says he is ready, just not willing. Yeah. It does concern me right now, the wind is blowing in the wrong direction. And its beginning to come back here. So its a concern [ indiscernible ] 3800 acres burned, four structures and one home burned. 380 homes right now are threatened. There is a nearby evacuation site at Middletown High School where a lot of people are staying right now. Coming up at 6 00 despite all this devastation there is a story about life. Its about a horse and a foal. The foal born right when this fire started and quite an amazing evacuation. In pope valley, Juliette Goodrich, kpix 5. Look forward to that story, all right, juliette, thank you. The overnight fog and cooler temperatures today did help firefighters gain the upper hand here. This morning low clouds covering much of napa valley raising the humidity level. Also, good news for that firefight. Brian hackney is tracking the latest conditions. Good news is that its not as hot as it was and not as windy as it could be for sure and we have the kpix 5 mobile weather van out to show you the conditions out there. The winds are shifting around but the velocity of the winds really arent that great. Back here we are looking at temperatures showing 91 degrees, relative humidity 34 . Of course, there hasnt been any rain. The barometric pressure is as she goes and the wind speed is 8 miles an hour which is whats showing up there right now is not really too bad. So the satellite also shows theres fog and low clouds offshore, and that is serving to keep the overall conditions in Northern California on the mild side. Thats the good news. The not so good news is that we are headed towards warmer temperatures by the weekend. So lets hope that while the winds are somewhat down and the temperatures are somewhat cool, they can get it under control. Allen, all right, brian, thanks. California is going to get some federal money to help in fighting that fire. The federal Emergency Management agency will reimburse up to 75 of the cost. The government has accused the carrier of cheating customers out of millions of dollars. Kpix 5 consumerwatch reporter julie watts on what happens now and why you may be a victim even if you dont have t mobile. Reporter anyone with a cell phone could become a victim. This has been called the comeback of cramming. You used to hear that word with la lines. Now tmobile has been taking on unauthorized charges since 2009 on consumer bills for things like horoscopes and celebrity gossip or flirting tips. And tmobile customers arent the only ones who need to worry. For its part, tmobile says its groundless but says it has set up a program to reimburse customers and will start contacting them starting this month. And no matter who your carrier is, this case is a good warning to check your bills for random charges and tmobiles case the fees showed up on customer bills as a 10 a month usage charge. If theres any charges that they dont understand, theres numbers and letters that they cant figure out what that charge is for, then they should contact the carrier and ask, what are these charges for . Reporter now, as for premium phone services, they are supposed to require customers to opt in twice but the fcc says Many Companies ignore the requirement. Unauthorized fees are known as gray charges. And you can get hit with one just for agreeing to a free trial of something. Its estimated that one in three americans gets billed for those gray charges and the average cost for each one of those to consumers, 215 a year. Oh. Ouch. No idea. Can you do anything to stop it . Reporter you can definitely talk to your carrier. This is what we advise. You can protect your phone bill, you should contacted your carrier and you want to say you want to block all Third Party Charges but be warned, it wont you wont actually be able to make any of the charitable donations from your phone anymore. As far as your credit or debit cards, there are services that will flag suspicious gray charges to your bank account so there are things you can sign up for but the best thing to do check the bill. Reporter yeah, first of all check the bill and let your carrier know you dont want any of those charges. Good deal. Thank you. The u. S. Homeland security secretary is ordering some stepped up security at overseas airports. The order applies to airports with direct flights to the united states. Kpix 5s john ramos reports on how it got here and how its getting home. Reporter a Home Invasion happened on this block of San Franciscos potrero hill. The intruder was still on the loose. But neighbors had an unusual reaction when they saw a picture of the suspect. Its adorable i want to hug it. [ laughter ] reporter no, no, no. Not that guy. This guy. The yellow bellied marmot normally lives in the sierra above 4,000 feet and looks remarkably like large unhappy gopher. [ laughter ] reporter but a neighbor on this block snapped some pictures of one hanging out near her backyard deck. So they called in duane titus with Wildlife Emergency Services. This is like i said the 6th one in four years. So i we have become the de facto go to folks for wayward marmots. [ laughter ] reporter duane says marmots are notorious for stowing away in the engine compartments of cars in the mountains. Folks leave and they hitch a right and get out the next thing and, theyre in San Francisco [ laughter ] reporter but they also have a sweet tooth for fruit. And late this afternoon, the trap was sprung. And the marmot is now taking another trip. To the wildlife clinic in san jose. After he gets a checkup he will take one last ride back home to yosemite. In San Francisco, john ramos, kpix 5. As for how that marmot is getting home, the rock bar sf on 29th has offered to host a little fundraiser tonight. The money will pay for the gasoline to help the Wildlife Emergency Services get that little guy home. Im sure he will be very happy to get back to yosemite where he belongs. In time for the 4th of july absolutely. Getting back to the fire up in napa county, you know, we talked a little bit about how the weather today helped firefighters. But then we sort of saw the winds pick up. The winds often kick in in the afternoon and they did today. They are up to 10 miles an hour. In fact, speak of the fire, lets go 75 miles north of San Francisco. Just east of angwin and you can see whats happening right now live aerial views show that there are still a lot of flames. Look around that fire it just exploded overnight in size. Winds are up to 10 miles an hour now but stronger than yesterday. And this is what it looks like live on the ground right now. So they have their work cut out for them but we can offer a little bit of help in the weather department. As you look at that from ground level and again from the helicopter, well go way out into space and show you the satellite view of california which shows a long layer of low cloudiness along the shoreline keeping temperatures mild. Its still near 90 out there but it could be worse, often is this time of the year. Back if the city we have low clouds looking toward coit tower and the numbers now in the city, its 65 degrees in San Francisco. Concord has 84. So a 20degree spread. San jose 75 degrees. Heading out tonight a mild night in the bay area but the winds are up closer to the shoreline with gusts up to 20 miles an hour here. About 10 miles an hour by where the fire is. 69 degrees by 8 00 tonight inland under mostly clear skies. Heres the futurecast model of how the atmosphere will look over the next 24 hours. Watch the low clouds come back into the shoreline. Freeze this at sunrise tomorrow morning. And you can see a lot of low clouds along the peninsula and moving into the east bayshore line but you let this continue to roll, and they all pull back to the shore as they did today. So well see a mostly sunny day but mild again. As long as that low pressure trough is inland, High Pressure is offshore, well continue with mild conditions. Out the door tomorrow morning, we have drizzle along the shoreline. But thats about it. Out at the beach this translates into cool readings. So mild for one more day. A warming trend begins on friday. And well be back into the mid 90s by sunday. So the extended forecast we look for a mild thursday, friday looks okay, and then numbers begin to warm back to the mid 90degree range inland by sunday. Keep it there on monday. Then a little cooler in the latter half of the week. So just like the sinewave thats coming up, going up and down a little bit. If you want to keep track of it in your own neighborhood get the instant forecast and download the cbs sf bay area weather after for iphone or ipad, and you can customize it for the city where you live and even share your photos. And thats a good way to keep in touch. Free. Thank you. Well, if you heard a restaurant was spreading something viral, you probably would want to keep your distance. But thats not the case tonight in San Francisco where people are racing in to grab one proud burger. We need to get a crown. Yeah [ laughter ] reporter today at exactly 1 burger king on earth, workers are busy assemblying a whopper with a message. Order 91, please. Reporter the gay pride themed proud whopper and yes, it comes with a matching crown. We actually three. We are going to send one to liz in england. Reporter the burger and the crowns were actually unveiled during the weekend pride festivities. The campaign caught fire this morning on social media after burger king posted this video. So its like a gay burger or what is it . Reporter in vintage San Francisco irony that Viral Campaign was fueled largely by twitter which is exactly one block down Market Street from the burger king at the center of all this. You can connect something commercial with a message. Reporter in that message, some see pride. Its a smart thing to do, San Francisco is a very diverse community. Reporter others see something else. Personally, i find this to be corporate pandering to a group of people that they never cared about before. Reporter of course a Business Condition skew politics the other direction like we saw with hobby lobby. Or chikfila. Yeah. [ laughter ] reporter so even the corporate skeptics have to admit, this burger isnt all bad. It shows that there is change. Yeah. Reporter and if you dont care for the food, theres always the crown. A little thin but you know [ laughter ] well, of course it is. Heres the crown and, you know, these are always fun to collect so there you go. And this is the proud whopper as you can see there on the packaging it says the proud whopper. The things are heavy. And they have shirts too. On the inside of the wrapper, so the burger is wrapped in this kind of rainbow wrapping, and on the inside, it says, we are all the same on the inside. On the back of the shirt, be your way.
