A witness said he tried to warn brittney about the train but she didnt hear him, either, and was killed. Kpix 5 viewers may remember her from a story last month when she was interviewed about an explosion near her home. She is screaming like help me. Very well liked here by students, very well liked by teachers and counselors who also noticed the turnaround she made. Reporter she is remembered as a good student who was going to College Next Year and wanted to be an ob gyn. She had matured a lot in recent years. Real close. And [ pause ] its hard. Reporter grief counselors went to her classes today at san leandro high. I wanted to acknowledge the fact that she was her death was here. Authorities tell us the worker fell 15 feet on to cement just over an hour ago. The workers identity hasnt been released. A former cal fire chief accused of killing his girlfriend faced a judge this afternoon. This is our first look at Orville Fleming since he was caught last week. He had been on the run for more than two weeks. He is accused of killing a woman who had worked as an escort. Her body was found in the sacramento home that they shared. Several former players including a 49er are suing the nfl. They are accusing the league of illegally giving them painkillers and risky drugs. Reporter allen, eight former players filed the lawsuit here in the federal courthouse behind me with many more hundreds waiting in the wings all basically claiming they are damaged goods thanks to the nfls doctors and drugs. Eight players are listed as part of the lawsuit filed in San Franciscos federal court including former 49er jeremy newberry. You would have 20 to 25 guys standing with your pants half down waiting in line for a doctor who has 100 different syringes lined up and youre walking through, theyre sticking you one at a time. I just think it has a lot to do with our city because we have a lot of times they portray our city in a negative light and focus on the bad news. I think a lot of people were happy that we had some positive news. He is a senior at oakland technical high school. He is graduating with a 5. 0gpa. Classes could resume tomorrow at a south bay college where students were kicked out last night. Students were ushered out in the middle of class at the for profit Bryman College in san jose. No trespassing signs were hung in windows, locks on the doors were changed. Students were left wondering about their classes and the thousands of dollars of paid tuition. An official at the San Francisco branch says the South Bay School will reopen tomorrow. Several people are being honored tonight for acts of courage. San francisco District Attorney George Gascon is recognizing Good Samaritans who helped others in dangerous situations. One of those being honored a key witness who helped catch the man who kicked a woman in the head after robbing her just before last years gay pride parade. For that, we want to thank you and we appreciate your commitment to our community. [ applause ] the suspect in the attack is serving 6 years in jail. Each honoree got a certificate of recognition and a 200 check. Desperate times do call for desperate measures. A rescue mission in the north bay required firefighters to get very creative. The call of the wild was from a baby bird stuck in a pipe. Reporter for the Marinwood Fire Department this call for help didnt come over the radio. It came from a drain pipe on the back of the station. I can hear some chirping down there. You want to get the bird out. You kind of feel responsible. Reporter so firefighter Ryan Brackett and engineer smith responded with everything they had. I tried to reach my arm down. Because of the angle of the people i couldnt feel the bird. Thats the good thing about our job is coming up with a solution to a problem. We used a go pro camera to get an idea of what the pipe did. Reporter once they had the lay of the land, they still had to get down there. So they pulled out the vacuum cleaner and grabbed some lawn equipment. Kind of go through the bends of the pipe. Reporter after a few minutes of fishing, it worked. That bird got stuck right here on the back side. Reporter and what was said in that moment of triumph . I said, turn off the vacuum cleaner. Trying to get our little patient out of here. Reporter the bird, what you might call a runaway teenaged finch, is now being cared for at a foster home in novato. So you have to at this point feed him every 45 minutes from dawn until dusk. Reporter despite being sucked out of a drain pipe with a shop vac and a garden hose only injury seems to be that little abrasion on his little forehead. Nothing better than being rescued by a fireman and for this guy, absolutely the case. It was one of our most interesting rescues. That finch has attitude, doesnt it . After 6 weeks of tlc in the foster home, the bird should be ready to head back into the wild. Story to tell. Oh, man. All his little friends. The dog, the cat, the bird this week. A lot of rescues. Look at all green and the white over the sierra over western nevada. Thats all the moisture this low pressure area had but its heading in the wrong direction moving off to the east and something new will be moving in. You cant have a vacuum in the atmosphere. Something has to move in and that something is a big ridge of high pressure. You have heard that before. Its going to move in to allow sunshine to return and will allow temperatures to warm and well will be if you are making a weekend plan and many of us are, high and dry for the weekend. The deadly side effects if your dog gets a hold of a toxic treat. ,,,,,,,, th consumerwatch went after him and now petco says it is going to stop selling all pet treats made in china by the end of the year. The chain stays there are fears that the treats are making cats and dogs sick. We have been reporting on thousands of pets getting ill or dying even after eating treats made in china. The fda launched an investigation late last near but hasnt figured out which specific ingredient is the culprit. Vets are seeing a spike in pot poisoning among dogs. Consumerwatch reporter julie watts tells us the problem is bad in california. Over she is acting crazy. Reporter they are the kind of pet videos that shouldnt go viral. Dogs staggering shakerring and falling over after eating marijuana intended for human consumption. But veteran sean wells insists theres nothing funny about it. Its a drug like any other prescribed drug and can be serious. Reporter he and other vets say more and more pets are getting into their owners pot. We seen 2 to 3 cases a week up from one case a month years ago. In fact, according to a new report by a company that sells pet insurance, california is now the number one state in the nation for marijuanarelated pet health claims. Colorado where pot was legalized last year ranks fourth. Vets all over the country warn, while canines arent picky, they prefer edibles. They like the baked goods better than just a baggie or other medical preparations. We have seen them with lollipops. Reporter a serious problem because those portions are intended for humans, dogs weigh much less. And as any pet owner knows, they dont exercise self control. They dont understand, so they are just they eat something and now they feel really strange or they feel really sick. Reporter and that can lead to seizures, comas, even death. All the more reason wells says pet owners need to put away their pot. She is definitely still high though. Now, vets say its important to bring your dog in for treatment if you see or even suspect its eaten pot. At the least it will be need to be closely monitored and interestingly, were told this rarely happens with cats because apparently they are just more finicky.
