Through april. Len ramirez, kpix 5. Our last update shows at least 34 people have died in the bay area from the flu this season. Bart trains were brought to a standstill today because of an incident involving this ship. Now docked at the port of oakland. An onboard emergency had both the coast guard and bart concerned about the transbay tube. Kpix 5 reporter don knapp on a close call that none of us in the newsroom can ever remember happening before. Don. Reporter thats right, liz. Its within of those things you dont want to think about, in a Tall Building in an earthquake and sitting in a bart train in the transbay tube with a big ship overhead drawing a 30ton anchor and heading your way . That happened today. A very big container ship nearly 1,000 feet long was trying to tie up at the port of oakland berth 35 when this lost power. The ships crew to keep it from drifting dropped anchor. Bart was shut down and crews were dispatched because it was so close to the tube. Parts spokesman jim allison. I didnt want to go on record saying it didnt hit it but its safe for train traffic. Luckily nothing has happened to the transbay tube. Reporter allison says crews were dispatched. They walked through the tube. They looked around. There also were instruments inside the tube designed to go off in case of water or earthquake. There were no alarms and so he said what happened today was not even a close call and nothing happened, the tube is designed to handle this sort of thing and the harsh marine environment. It has 3 8 thick steel walls and thick concrete walls. It performed as it was supposed to. He is not even sure the anchor even came close. Live in oakland, don knapp, kpix 5. A shocking announcement from state water leaders today another example of how serious the drought is. The state Water Project wont be providing any water to local agencies that in turn supply twothirds of the state with its water supply. The decision will have direct impact on water districts that serve 25 million people. Its also a crushing blow to farmers, who normally count on the supply for crops. Local water districts will have to ration already dwindling supplies. We should all be clear by now that this is not a coming crisis. This is not an evolving crisis. This is a current crisis. Considering that we are now two thirds through the wet season, the state would have to experience heavy rainfall and snowfall every other day through may in order to just get us back. I said it was a shocking announcement, get this, its the first time in the 54year history of the state Water Project that its had to make these cuts. The state says 17 water districts are in danger of running out of water. They expect that number to rise. The belt tightening is happening close to home, as well. City leaders in San Francisco called for their own cutbacks in water use today. They are asking 2. 6 million customers to voluntarily reduce water usage by 10 . That includes People Living in San Francisco, san mateo, santa clara and alameda counties. Levels in the hetch hetchy Regional Water system are low, and the population is growing. It wont be that long before, if things do not change, we will start to seriously consider higher levels and consider mandatories. San Francisco Public Utilities Commission says it will know in a month or so whether they will have to start making water cuts mandatory. And in a worstcase scenario, the hetch hetchy system has enough water for one year. Wildlife authorities have put a hold on fishing while the state grapples with these dry conditions. Several rivers and creeks from San Mateo County to big sur have a new fishing ban. The san leandro river in pass ska dare row, aptos and other creeks are included. The lack of rain is threatening spawning fish. The ban is intended to increase the chances of fish being able to spawn instead of being caught. See more in our drought resource guide at kpix. Well have more sunshine tomorrow. I just zoomed things out. I want to show you two things. Theres not much going on around the bay area but look at all the activity off to the west. There are a significant number of storms out there. This is not for a lack of moisture moving through the pacific. It is for a lack of those storms not making it here because of that blocking ridge of high pressure. Lets talk about that high and where it is and where its going. It will be in a good spot on sunday that one of those areas of low pressure will ride around the top of the ridge, slide down the california coastline, and it will be a close call for showers but i do think near the bay and at the coastline you will get some rainfall coming up on sunday. As for much of next week, that ridge builds back just Strong Enough and just close enough to kick the storm track out of the bay area back up to the north. So it looks like its going to be a miss but at least its a near miss. Computer models do change and if this ridge builds farther to the south or to the west, we may be tapping into rainfall. Right now, next week does look dry. So lets cross our fingers for that rainfall coming up on sunday. Tonight, clear and cold. Sunny, mild for you on saturday. Highs around 60. Showers are possible coming up for super bowl sunday. Of course many of you inside watching the game. Highs tomorrow, close to average. San jose, for example, your average is 61. Novato 60. Cooler up north. Ukiah in the 20s tonight, 57 your high tomorrow. A few showers coming up on sunday. Then here we go again. Monday and tuesday, sunny and dry. Wednesday, thursday and friday, we are also looking mainly dry. So what we need and you have heard this from the water management, we dont want it all back at once. That would be the exact opposite which would be worse. We want a series of storms every few days give us a half inch to an inch of rainfall. Doesnt look like its going to happen in the next week or so. We have to cross our fingers for midfebruary. Thank you.
