Its just terrible. Reporter oakland developer phil tagami had been dining at the restaurant just before the violence broke out. And then we got a phone call hearing that our waiter had been attacked with a hammer. Reporter but with the bad also comes the good. A volunteer team from haywards Day Labor Center showed up to help the businesses clean up. Im almost tearing up right now because, uhm, the workers, uhm, like i said, they are a pretty poor. So if they can do volunteer, anybody can do volunteer time. Reporter kpix 5 did speak with the injured waiter drew cribly on the phone. These violent protestors are taking particular heat for attacking the studios of youth radio. People at neighboring business which had their windows smashed saturday night helped the station board up broken windows today. And tonight at 6 00, Mike Sugerman on the irony of protestors attacking youth radio. About an hour ago, ken bastida asked the Oakland Police chief why does it always turn out this way . Ken. Reporter yeah, juliette. We had a chance a little while ago to meet with the interim police chief here in oakland, sean whent, who committed that the department was taken by surprise on saturday night. They didnt expect that verdict to come down then and they were completely caught flatfooted on that. Sunday he said that more officers were brought on duty and that things were kept much calmer. They were able to control the streets a little bit better. Then last night the demonstrators amassed again and things really took a turn for the worse. Unfortunately, yesterday didnt go quite the same. We had roughly the same staffing dedicated yesterday that we had on sunday night. But we had a different crowd element that arrived yesterday that was obviously intent on more lawlessness than the group on sunday night including going up on the freeway as well as conducting the acts of vandalism that occurred. We have done a lot of training about how to, you know, safely make arrests in these type of scenarios and it is labor intensive. It requires a fair number of volunteers to pull that off. Reporter yeah. The interim chief says it just takes a lot of time to put together enough officers on the street to combat a roving mob of People Health bent on breaking things up. In 2005 the city was ordered to put together a crowd control plan and they havent done very well with that by any stretch of the imagination. 2009, 2010, the oscar grant demonstrations of course there was looting then, vandalism, hundreds of arrests. That resulted in a 1. 25 million settlement that is going out to the demonstrators. 2011, the dramatic riots with the occupy folks that came into oakland of course we remember the encampment at Frank Ogawa Plaza that resulted in a 1. 17 million settlement. Of course then the city accused of violating its own crowd control policy. The city says its understaffed and needs more police officers. Heres a couple of questions we didnt get to ask but we will try to ask. What happened to Thomas Frazier the federal overseer who was supposed to folks this department . What happened with brat who was supposed to fix this department . What happened with bill bratton the sixfigure consultant from new york city . How is he going to fix the department . Where thi where is he today . Things in l. A. Got rough, too. Hundreds of demonstrators broke off from a peaceful gathering and vandalized their way through the streets of southwest los angeles last night. Police chief charlie beck says he will allow crowds into the streets if they are peaceful. But to be sure, for those of you that were here last night and came for the wrong reasons, if you come here again tonight, you will go to jail. Not only will you go to jail; but your actions will take away from the power of this moment. He says protesting is a First Amendment right that should be allowed and even facilitated. But he will not tolerate violence. One of the jurors who acquitted George Zimmerman told Cnns Anderson Cooper it wasnt easy to come up with that verdict. It was just hard thinking that somebody lost their life, uhm, and theres nothing else could be done about it. She says she was convinced the evidence showed zimmerman was trying to defend himself and his neighborhood and that race had nothing to do with it. I think his heart was in the right place. It just went terribly wrong. Do you think he is guilty of something . I think hes guilty of not using good judgment. When he was in the car, he had called 911, he shouldnt have gotten out of that car. Federal prosecutors are looking into the case but to pursue civil rights charges, they would have to be confident they could prove zimmerman was motivated by racial hatred. State regulators demand pg e pay a 300 million fine for the 2010 san bruno pipeline blast. It is the largest fine ever imposed by the Public Utilities commission.
