A california lawmaker has a message for the boy scouts lift the ban on gay members or lose a huge tax break. Kpix 5s phil matier on the punish for the policy change and the pushback, as well. Phil. Reporter thats right. It appears that the boy scouts are now taking center stage in sacramento with the state putting pressure on them. Heres the story. Reporter california state snorri accardo lara is turning the heat up on the boy scouts moving to strip them of their taxexempt status unless they allow in gays. I thought it was important to set the tone in california that we are not going to condone discrimination. Reporter since federal law bars the state from denying scouts the use of schools or state parks, lara and 13 of his fellow democrats decided to hit the scouts in their wallets. Nonprofit status is a privilege thats given by the Financial Support of all californians so if an organization is discriminating, therefore they shouldnt be privileged. Reporter officials at the mount diablo scouting district declined to comment on the move saying they havent had time to study the tax plan. But republicans were quick to enter the fray. I think its an issue of political posturing. We have been waiting for the boy scouts to end the discrimination practice for a while now. They have had recently had a meeting in which they decided to kick the can and allow individual troops to determine if they were going to continue discriminating or not. Reporter how much of this is to try to put pressure on the boy scouts to change . The idea here is to obviously put pressure on the boy scouts. And if this is one way to create leverage, then, you know, so be it. A lot of things out here were looking at might be unintended consequences. For instance, what happens to the funding to many popular afterschool programs like the boxing academies and senator la ras own district in los angeles run by the Catholic Church . Are you setting a precedent here that could later apply to places like the Catholic Church or the Mormon Church or other groups . I cant predict what other members are going to do. This bill is just focused on the boy scouts. That focus will continue because whatever the outcome and this does take a twothirds vote of the assembly and the senate and the governors signature, is going to be a very public series of debates on the issue and maybe possibly thats the senators point just, as well.
