Day one of the Democratic National convention kicked off with a theme that was all optimism. The idea, united together. But an email scandal and some spirited protests put that notion to rest. For more insights we go to marc sandalow. Did Bernie Sanders say enough to rally his supporters around Hillary Clinton . Reporter this was no ted cruz moment like last week. He strongly endorsed the nominee. But probably not the speech that Hillary Clinton would have written. The one thing Bernie Sanders didnt do is look his own supporters in the eye and say if you dont get out to vote, this could be a disaster. There are a lot of millions of young voters out there who came to age during the obama presidency. That means the only president they have ever voted for is somebody who they really liked. And i think people have been around for more elections know the feeling of voting for somebody youre not crazy about but is the lesser of two evils. Bernie sanders might have taken a moment to say that to thousands of the people in the convention who were very upset he wasnt the nominee. He didnt go that far. Marc, last night we heard sanders supporters booing very loudly. How badly does clinton need sanders supporters to win . Reporter if you guys or anybody out there is not a donald trump supporter, you might sit down for this. 7 polls have come out in the last two days. Five of them have donald trump winning the election. You have up and down with the conventions. But the guru of polling who nailed the last couple elections, says right now theres a 54 chance if the election were held today that donald trump would be the next president. Now, even he acknowledges that that is almost certain to change but anyone who thinks that that Republican Convention last week would be like an anchor sinking trump down, thats not what the polls show. There is a tradition for the other parties candidate to stay out of the news during conventions. But donald trump was not silent yesterday. Reporter trump doesnt stay out of the news. It doesnt matter what traditions are. So he this is from the time the convention gaveled down to the time it stopped he was very busy on his twitter account calling Bernie Sanders folding, he said tim kaine the Vice President is a joke. He said cory booker one of the keynote speakers, he knows more about cory booker than even cory booker knows about himself. Elizabeth warren often referred to as pocahontas spoke glowingly about crooked hillary who she always hated. Donald trump is not going to sit on the sidelines for better or worse. Marc, last night, so many big speakers, michelle obama, cory booker, Bernie Sanders, was there a clear highlight from last nights opening . Yeah. For those of you up early in the morning who dont stay up or dont bother to watch the Democratic National convention, the one you should see is michelle obama. She gave an incrediblably powerful speech about what its like as an africanamerican woman raising two black girls in a house that slaves built as she put it. It was a remarkable speech. Tonight, we get to hear from one of the democrats best stemwinders and thats the spouse of the candidate, bill clinton. She slammed trump without ever saying his name. Kpix 5s anne makovec is live in san jose on the air quality concerns that could even mean fewer cars on the roads today. Anne. Reporter thats the hope of air quality officials. They are asking people not to drive their cars today. Obviously, that is easier said than done for a lot of commuters. But basically, the advice is try to do everything you can to prevent more pollutants from getting into the air. This High Pressure that we have been seeing that roberta has been talking about is basically a tracking a lot of bad air and pollution close to the ground. Roberta calls it a triple threat. Hot temperatures, smog and smoke from the soberanes fire burning almost 100 miles away and making it north and staying. A High Pressure system acts like a lid and traps air quality where we live and breathe so in addition to the smog we already have smoked trapped in the area longer than it otherwis would be. Reporter so stay inside if you have bad allergies or breathing problems, the elderly and children. Local businesses now, sunnyvale based yahoo has been sold to verizon. Cbs News Business analyst Jill Schlesinger shares why the companys core business didnt sell for as high as expected. Jill, yahoo was once considered the king of the web so what happened to this company . Reporter it was founded 22 years ago a onestop shop for email, news and other content geared towards users who lackedded expertise in navigating the in evidence. First problem was it really missed out on the huge trend in Search Engines. It leased its search to google in the year 2000 tried to buy google in 2002 for 3 billion. That offer was quickly rebuffed. Now, yahoo eventually started its own Search Engine but never claimed googles hold on the market so although yahoo was able to attract hundreds of millions of users, it still does every day, it could not monetize it. Thats because advertisers had already made the shift to search. How did the advent of mobile impact yahoo specifically . Reporter if you look at the history of yahoo, it really is amazing. Its a peak valuation of this company. The year 2000 it was worth about 125 billion. Then in the 2000s after the dot com boom busted, yahoo created and distributed content online and sold display ads against that content and you know what, things went well even after the dotcom bust. Sales climbed about tenfold between 2001 and 2008. But the big banner ads didnt translate well on small mobile screens and then as consumers spent more time on apps rather than searching the web, they fell behind. Then they went to facebook and twitter, yahoo lost another competitive advantage. So imagine going from 125 billion to yesterdays announcement of just under 5 billion, i guess thats the truest acknowledgement of what many long suspected. The yahoo couldnt survive on its only. Its in the history books of a once great company. In a sense its a cautionary tale in the tech world, right . Jill schlesinger this morning from new york city, thank you.
