I can tell you the city has established this Family Assistance Center and in just a few minutes over at the football stadium, not too far from here, they are going to set up headquarters for families and other people affected by this. They are going to provide resources to help families cope. Funeral expenses, legal aid, air travel, lodging, everything. They have also established this one orlando fund which already has millions of dollars in the bank to help these families deal with the aftermath. They are certainly going to need help. Reporter we can see two sets of flowers have been set up here in front of the Police Headquarters and once the news of this officers death gets out, expect this memorial to grow. The chief made the announcement during a press conference that officer mike katherman had died. He was in full uniform on routine patrol on his motorcycle going northbound on 10th street near horning street yesterday afternoon when a van pulled in front of him. He couldnt stop in time and hit the van. A Good Samaritan stopped to help, performed cpr and even used his police radio to call for help. But katherman was dead at the hospital a short time later. Dozens of officers were at the hospital all day. When news of his death got out dozens of them arrived and formed a procession to escort his body to the coroners office. He loved doing his job. He loved his family. Tragic. Put his uniform on, left to go to work, wanted to see his family when he got off and he didnt make it. Reporter San Francisco supervisors just passed a plan tuesday to open six new homeless shelters within the next two years. This unanimous vote comes after three months of controversial negotiations over supervisor david campos homeless shelter legislation. The original proposal would have required the city to open six long term homeless shelters also known as Navigation Centers, within a year. A Navigation Center allows people to bring in all of their belongings and companions as they look for permanent housing. The centers would have also included a wet house and safe injection site which means people could drink and drugs there legally. In april supervisor campos says something needs to be done to address the homelessness problem. We know that there is an increase in the number of homeless about 4 increase but beyond the numbers, i think qualitatively its bad. Mayor leo posed the idea of a lee opposed the idea of a safe injection site and no way they could open 6 centers in a year. They worked out a plan. With the help of the citys new homeless director they agreed on the legislation that gives the city two years to open six Navigation Centers and the city will explore the idea of having a wet house instead of requiring it. The revised plan focuses on permanent support of housing to find a way to pay for the goal of housing 8,000 people over the next four years. Happening today, a bay area civil rights attorney is asking for a probe into the oakland plymouth amid a growing sex scandal. In a few hours, the attorney will demand a public report outlining the hiring process and recruitment of officers. He also plans to file action to hold city leaders accountable for the officers involved in misconduct stemming from alleged abuse of a victim who says she slept with dozens of officers for multiple agencies. So far a Contra Costa County sheriffs deputy has been placed on leave following allegations he had sex with the underaged girl. Several oakland Police Officers are also implicated. We have looked at 4 alligators and couldnt find any evidence they were involved. Officials say the child and his family are visiting from nebraska.
