A Law Enforcement showdown tonight in santa cruz, our joe vazquez reports the police chief saying Homeland Security deceived him and a criminal gang bust morphed into an immigration raid. Joe . Reporter city leaders in santa cruz say they feel angry and misled following a major bust early last week. We cannot tell you how disappointed we are by the betrayal of the department of Homeland Security. Reporter the Santa Cruz Police chief said his department worked side by side the u. S. Department of Homeland Security last monday knocking down doors and slapping the cuffs on 21 people. The chief says he was told it was an operation to get criminals off the streets. In fact, some of the arrestees were suspected members of ms 13, a criminal gang. Court paperwork shows theyre accused of crimes ranging from Drug Trafficking to homicide, but the chief said he later learned 10 of the people arrested that day had nothing to do with criminal activity. As authorities were kicking in doors, the feds were checking for proper citizenship power playwork and if folks didnt have it, they paperwork and if folks didnt have it, they were transferred to San Francisco where they were detained. We agreed to participate only after being assured by officials from the department of Homeland Security that this operation did not have an immigration opponent to it. Reporter injustice. Yeah. Reporter jose lucas said his daughter and two other family members were detained and eventually let go without charges. He doesnt believe this should happen in a sanctuary city where police have vowed not to work with the feds except in extreme cases. In a statement Homeland Security said the allegations are completely false, reckless and disturbing. Homeland security says during the five years of planning the operation the police chief knew there was a possibility people might be detained and it was agreed that no foreign nationals would enter the Santa Cruz Police departments facility or their police vehicles. We met Elizabeth Pena at the Evacuation Center at lick high school. She was living in a tent on coyote creek near Roosevelt Park when the floodwaters came rushing through. How scary was it . It was scary because my dog saved my life. He had to use the restroom and because of him we would have been buried alive with the dirt. I was asleep. Reporter the city is slowly working to give the all clear to neighborhoods. Tonight residents at the River Bend Mobile Home Park off old oakland road were allowed to return home after a two day evacuation. You never know, man, with the water coming up pretty quick, we got so much rain, so you dont know what to do. Reporter as residents try to put their lives back together, city officials are still trying to piece together what went wrong. The data the city was working with estimated coyote creek could handle about 7,400 cubic feet per second at the point it first spilled over its banks on rock springs road near kelly park, but city officials estimate the flow was perhaps only 2 3 of that when the flooding started and while thousands of people are still under a mandatory evacuation order, it is largely on the honor system. We are not going as far as blocking streets and creating checkpoints because we have residents, franklin, that did not heed the mandatory evacuation areas and theyre moving freely in and out. Reporter still some residents like jose nunez believe that much of what was damaged or destroyed could have been spared. And everythings just gone. We dont have anything. Even now it reeks of smoke. After the storm you can see probably 2foot of water through this whole area and theres a murky substance like oily and black, not good, very toxic i would assume. Reporter its not clear what contaminants, if any, could be found in the debris. People who once lived in the ghost shipped worried about asbestos and other toxins and they say recent storms only have made things worse. Lee says it now appears the oily flood waters leached out into the ground and possibly the bay. The bay area Quality Management district is testing the site for toxins and the Water Quality control board is urging the city to clean it up, but there is no timeline to move the debris. In oakland christin ayers, kpix5. Meanwhile San Francisco artists learning in a vernal heights warehouse claim their landlord is using the ghost ship fire to get rid of them. Tenants have been living in the converted space called the sun spot for 10 years, but they say shortly after the fire they got eviction notices. The owner wants to put up condos on the site, but he says he never gave anyone permission to live in the warehouse. To say that as an individual didnt know that there was people that had been living here for so long as he kept cashing the checks, thats a little far fetched. Reporter scientists have made a shocking discovery. Many modern day humans are Walking Around carrying archaic dna. Those of european or asian descent, roughly 1 to 5 of their dna comes from neanderthals. Scientists can extract the dna from tiny bits of fossilized bone. Professor ed green runs the paleo genomics lab and said experts can now quickly sift through and locate dna thanks to technology. How did this mashup occur . Chalk it up to prehistoric hankypanky. About 50 to 80,000 years ago when our ancestors migrated out of africa, they encountered neanderthals in europe and asia and in the east. These hookups resulted in children. Today we carry traces of these encounters in our dna. Some neanderthal genes boost our immune systems and protect against infections. It could be the High Altitude of tibet or the very cold environment around the arctic.
