A boy playing with matches started the fire. We sent betty yu to novato tonight. Reporter chopper 5 captured the grass fire engulfing a power line and causing it to spark. From the ground, the flames and smoke caught karens attention. She shot this video with her phone. I saw looked like the roof, the ridge was on fire. And, a lot of crackling from the power lines. Reporter pg e was on hand to assess the damage shortly after the brush fire broke out behind town homes after 6 00 p. M. Firefighters were able to get it under control within hours. Though it burned about six acres and badly damaged one home. I was pretty relieved because i asked one of the firefighters right away are we in danger and she said it is contained down here. Reporter it wasnt easy to do so after days of high temperatures and low humidity. Grass, brush, trees in novato are extremely stressed by the drought. This is the second fire we have respond to in two days that threatened homes like so it is very challenging fortous fight the fires back to back. Reporter the novato Fire Protection district says it will stay on scene overnight to finish mopping up the damage and put out any hot spots. In novato, betty yu, kpix5. For the north in petaluma, a grass fire off highway 101 quickly spread to trees and homes nearby. It started around 3 15 this afternoon. A look at chopper 5 shows the flames shooting from the homes at stewart drive. Two people suffered injuries and one cat died in the fire. Four homes were destroys and ten others damaged. 20 homes were evacuated. The fire forced chp to briefly close part of northbound 101. That backed up traffic all the way to novato. All lanes have since reopened. Also tonight, firefighters racing to stop the spread of that fast moving wild fire in the Santa Cruz Mountains. In just the past few hours, that fire has nearly doubled in size. It is now burning more than 2200 acres. Kpix5s andria borba reports from the fire lines. Reporter im standing on the eastern edge of the loma fire right off of the road. You can see the glow behind me, the flames are continuing to grow without one key element typically seen in wild fires across the country. Wind. The sizzle of flame on fuel in the Santa Cruz Mountain is unmistakable. The fire is sending wildlife scurrying and is outmatching the hoses cal fire is deploying against it. It looks better now than edit a few hours ago. But i dont like it. I dont. Reporter burning in terrain that has not seen an ember in decades. Dozer line and chain saws are the best bets of physically stopping the advancing flames. The only upside of the fire, these knob cone pines which dont go to seed until scorched. For cal fire and inmate crews on the front line, the fact the fire has doubled in size in two days goes against every fight about five behavior they have ever learned. Volunteers at the horse show ground ins santa cruz are caring for more than two dozen displaced horses and people at the Santa Cruz County fairgrounds are taking care of four alpacas. One man had to evacuate his horses in the middle of the night. Loading horses in a dark trailer at night is dangerous. We were lucky our horses loaded easily. Owners should always have an evacuation plan for their animals. New video shows us exactly where the fire started. It broke out in this area of the Santa Cruz Mountains yesterday. Tonight, the city of oakland is working to fix a key piece of Technology Used to solve crimes. This comes after an exclusive kpix5 report uncovered that some cameras have been useless for years. Only on 5, Christin Ayers shows us how the city is taking action. Reporter it has been two weeks since we revealed the problem. Despite signage that says so, the cameras in Cesar Chavez Park are not working. Melanie found out in the worst way when her brother and another man were shot in front of the cameras in august. He loved his family so much. Reporter now, councilman noel gallo says there is a plan to fix the cameras. For sure tomorrow, you will see the installers at the park replacing the cameras and making sure that the recording devices are in place. Reporter since our story aired, the city bought 30,000 worth of equipment to replace the Surveillance System which was damaged in a flood, but the cameras in the park are not the only problem. He says this city run camera here doesnt work either. And it gets worse. And we have certain cameras located in certain places to record the illegals dumping hot spots. The cameras there, but they are not recording anything. Reporter dummy cameras throughout the city of oakland that are either broken or were never meant to record. Gallo says the city is scrambling to fix problem too. The city has taken an inventory of nine Recreation Centers and park facilities with cameras. All have functional Surveillance Systems, though several of the cameras require repair. Peralta hacienda was not on the list, but they have just bought new cameras to replace the dummy cameras.
