And the heroism that saved dozens of others. I wish i could have saved more, to be honest. And good evening. , im live in orlando, were bringing you the latest information. Were getting new information on the shooter, omar mateen. And were hearing accounts of witnesses who went to the pulse, that he actually free wented the frequented the nightclub. The new information is starting to surface, as orlando continues to mourn, there was a candlelight vigil tonight we want to share with you thousands gathered downtown orlando for this vigil. A bell was rung 49 times, once for each victim. Many in the crowd said they felt compelled to attend, because the pulse played a big part in their lives in the lgbt community. We are learning the names and the faces lost in the shooting. They range in age from 1850. Investigators now getting r time line of what happened inside pulse. Fbi agents are examining omar mateens cell phone and computer as they try to track who he was talking to, and what he was reading in the weeks and days before the attack. We see no indication that this was a plot directed from outside the united states, and we see no indication that he was part of any kind of network. Reporter the feds found evidence he researched disney world as a possible target before choosing the pulse nightclub. Mateen opened fire in that club just after 2 00 a. M. Sunday. He laughed, and as he was laughing, thats when he fired. Reporter an uniformed off duty officer working at a bouncer returned fire, and called for backup. Two officers arrived, and all three moved in. Orlando police are trained to attack active shooters immediately rather than wait for a s. W. A. T. Team. Because of that exchange of gunfire, that forced the suspect to retreat back into the bathroom where he held some people hostage. Reporter forcing mateen to retreat gave countless people a chance to escape. Mateen had about four or five hostages inside the restroom but others were hiding in the club. Officers outside the building removing air conditioning unit and several trapped victims crowd through the hole. The gun man called 911, pledged allegiance to isis, and spoke in a morning language the police could not a Foreign Language the police could not eye five. The police had his phone number after he hung up. The focus was to get him to make this a peaceful resolution. He wasnt interested in that didnt talk much. Reporter the standoff ended several hours after it began with a gun battle between the shooter and a s. W. A. T. Team. They had punched holes through a wall, and stormed the club. Many, many bodies, bodies stacked upon bodies, and lots the blood. Reporter earlier today, we found a bay area connection. We want to introduce you to star shelton, she lives in San Francisco. She used to date one of the bouncerss pulse, kj morriss family learned she was among the victims after waiting all day at the hospital. I want people that dont know her to know she is a vibrant, full of life individual, that brought joy to everybody that she came across. And always wanted to just help people and i know that on this tragic night, i know she was there helping someone. Shes a fighter. Reporter and shelton says she will go to orlando to honor her former partner. Also arriving in orlando on thursday is president obama, and he will be here to pay his respects to the victims and the victims family members. Veronica de la cruz is joining us with more on the victims, and really, the painstaking process of connects victims and victims families. It was an agonizing wait. Shortly after news spread about the shooting, many of the victims relatives and friends rushed to the scene of the crime. Family members gathered in orlando for news about their loved ones. Back to you. Reporter were outside of the Trauma Center of the orlando hospital that is a couple blocks away from the nightclub, and some of the victims were released today. We spotted one as she was walking across the lawn area she had bandaging on her because she had been shot. She suffered a gunshot to her lower leg. She says she remembers seeing the shooter, ran into the bathroom to hide. Hear the banging, the banging, and we thought it was music. Where were you . I was he was right behind me. Literally right behind me, and i looked and ran. Im happy that im alive. You have to think about this. The death toll could have been much higher, had it not been for this Trauma Center. This is the lead Trauma Center in orlando, and it just happened to be a couple of blocks away from the pulse nightclub. They went through a lot of drill training two weeks ago. Someone told us what it was like when the victims came in. They brought the first patient in, and they brought another in, and another patient in, and they said there were possibly 20 more gunshot wound patients coming in, and at that point, i called my backup, very chaotic. There were patients that were in pain, or crying. There was staff that was very busy, but very taskoriented. Reporter a lot of surgeons here at the Trauma Center working over time, nurses staff, volunteers, theyre all here. We see them on the ground, with the available tipples family members victims family members as well. Candlelight vigils are happening around the nation, and specifically in the bay area. And joe has that story. Reporter they gathered all around the bay area, here in walnut creek, you can see the crowd at club 1220. Many we are gathered here today to say we are resolved. Reporter resolved, they say, to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. For this to happen in orlando, just haunting. Reporter on the campus of santa clara university, there were prayers, tears. In san jose, they grieved with a silent march, lit candles on the route of several nightclubs. Very, very hard thing to realize that we continue to be targets for people. Overdoses reported in the bay area, and tonight, andrea tells us an investigation led the feds to a suspected pill mill in San Francisco. Reporter inside this unassuming outer sunset Apartment Building was the headquarters of a major drug operation, according to the dea and doj, and Law Enforcement says this couple were the master minds of it. A 6 month operation ended at the corner of 44th avenue and taravil. They taped off the area, and people in hazmat suits. Reporter why the suits . It claims the couple with a massive facebook presence was pressing counterfeit objection oxycodone with fentanyl. Hazmat suits with masks. Reporter evidence claimed from wire taps, surveillance mounted to poles in plain sight, and a client list carelessly dumped in trash cans, the dea claims the couple was pressing up to 500 tablets a day, dropping cash on others. And they along with king harris the 2 were busy. One client from the dark net made more than 20 purchases of fentanyl laced bills. It surpriseed me with this big production. Reporter this latest bust of oxycodone laced with at the present time nil is not related to the with fentanyl is not related to the recent overdoses in the sacramento area, which shows how widespread this problem is.
