And we always say that and hope and think that is the last one. Reporter police chief larry esqulvel was off duty when he got the call that his officer had been shot and killed in the line of duty. It was the most difficult call i had taken. He loved his job. Reporter officer Michael Johnson was trained in crisis intervention like the one he was called to. But he was fatally shot before he could even talk to scott dunham. It is difficult for us. It is difficult for myself as a chief to understand knowing that one of my officers paid the ultimate price. Reporter the chief says since tuesday, the communities rallied around the force. At two memorials for johnson friday, many shook hands, thanks, and even hugged officers. They do so much for us to protect us. Im just sad. This man came out here to do his job. You know. He didnt know he wasnt going to make it back home. Reporter a tragedy that united a community and its police force. They should be very proud of the men and women that work here. That protect and serve them. The police chief is also answering questions about a major Communications Fail in the minutes after officer johnson was shot. Our len ramirez got a firsthand look at the problem. So, here is an example. Reporter San Jose Patrol officer glen baldwin was trying to demonstrate his in car computer but it crashed during our interview. It means it is not connect today the system. Reporter he says that happens a lot. People will be shocked that you guys have this system and you cant do your job. Im shocked that i have this system and i cant do my job. We are in the heart of Silicon Valley. Reporter baldwin says officers have struggled with the outdated system for years but the final straw was last tuesday night in the minutes after officer Michael Johnson was killed. Tuesday night, frankly like a lot of nights, the system slowed and then stopped working altogether. Reporter officers say this system which sends and receives information from dispatch and shares it with units on the street stayed down city wide until the next morning forcing officers to use only radios. That not working is a big problem. Reporter last september, an officer sent this memo to the chief saying these problems need to be fixed before one of us becomes a statistic. Today the chief said the system crashed after the shooting because it couldnt handle the increase in traffic. I dont know the specifics but it is the bandwidth in terms of the amount of officers regarding that incident. Reporter mayor sam liccardo says it is aging infrastructure tied to the san jose budget crisis. We try to keep people on board. Thats our first priority. It an infrastructure suffer. Reporter on the same day as the shooting, the mayor asked for more money in his budget to replace the mobile computer system. Len ramirez, kpix5. The mayors budget calls for outfitting 250 patrol cars with new mobile communications devices. A new email is the latest twist in the story of the vallejo woman who was supposedly abducted and released. Joe vasquez has new information. Reporter we have learned now there have been a total of three emails now sent to the chronicle. Two of them yesterday. By someone claiming to be the kidnapper. What happened yesterday, there were two emails. One of the emails gave evidence. Reporter daniel russo is the attorney for aaron quinn who standing squarely behind his report to police that someone kidnapped his girlfriend from his vallejo home monday. Russo says that email sent yesterday had a photo attached. A photo of some sort of evidence from the kidnapping crime scene. On it was a piece of evidence. They offered a photograph of evidence that corroborated my clients story. Reporter wednesday night, police say they found no evidence to support the kidnapping claim. They say the couple made it up. The entire story is so bizarre. Reporter we asked former fbi agent rick smith to look at the case. He said there are too many details for police. The odd 8,500 ransom. The fact aaron and denise got lawyers so quickly. The story as told by the boyfriend didnt hold up. Somehow, the victim got word of this. Surfaced. And then realized there was a possible criminal charge against her and him. Got an attorney, and or disappeared. Reporter but aarons Attorney Says the police now seem to be taking this case more seriously. I think they are singing a different tune now. They are putting a full press on finding these guys. They are going to have to do some moon walking back from this hoax thing. Reporter so we are back to square one. Is this a kidnapping or a hoax . All of the Vallejo PoliceDepartment Says it is under investigation and being carefully evaluated. As for the emails, well, we just dont have enough evidence here. We dont have enough details to know what to make of them and how they fit into this puzzle. If the idea is to catch the bad guys, why is the attorney who represents one of the victims in this case not willing to show us the email . Or a photograph . Or something that proves the case . They are very cryptic, but they are saying they dont want to mess up the Police Departments case. They dont want to spoil the investigation. On a case by case basis, commercial pilots who take antidepressants like zoloft are able to fly if they have been satisfactorily treated on the medication for at least 12 months.
