We now know the inmate on the loose faked an injury so he would be taken to Valley Medical Center in san jose. That is where he made his break. Kpix5s devin fehely says cops almost had him again tonight. Devin . Reporter yeah. It has been a bit of a back and forth for this suspect. The Sheriffs Department set up a perimeter hoping to trap him inside but convinced he had gotten away. A short time later it appeared the San Jose Police picked him up after a report of a break in and the theft of clothes but he slipped away again. We searched door to door, backyards, we believe he got out of our perimeter. Reporter the search dogs on the ground and helicopter overhead, the San Jose Police and the Sheriffs Department held a man hunt for janel carter, an inmate who overpower a sheriffs deputy during a doctors payment this afternoon. The Sheriffs Department set up several roadblocks around Valley Medical Center. He was originally arrested march of last year on five counts of child molestation. As night fell, San Jose Police flooded the neighborhood one block away from the hospital after reports that carter had been spotted there. Nervous. Um. You know, the fact that he is an inmate and we have kids and you know, in the house. A little nervous. Reporter investigators say it is not clear if carter planned his mistake or had help on the outside. They are poring over his phone record to see if they can help them pick up a trail that has gone cold. We will go back and do investigation work. See if it was a planned escape. Reporter carter was already facing those five felony counts for child molestation. Reporter allen, the victim had just left the high school here behind me and was walking home. That is when a man grabbed her and tried to force her into the backseat of his car. The attempted kidnapping occurred here in the 24,000 block of whitman street. It was near a Pedestrian Crossing over the nearby bart tracks when the man tried to force the 15yearold girl into his car. He had hands on her trying to drag her into the car. Yes, he physically put his hands on her. It was clear in the mind of this young woman that he was trying to take her. Reporter it happened in broad daylight just after 4 00 this afternoon. The girl was able to scream and run away. And call 911 from her cell phone. Police say this is very similar to another case which happened to another High School Student on february 20th. The descriptions of the male from both individuals seemed to be fairly close to one another. We found there was a white sedan. Reporter police say the victim in this case did everything right. I think she did a really good job. She should be commented for her actions of making noise and not being a willing victim just to jump into that vehicle. Reporter now, the victim is described as a white man in his 20s , about 6 6, 150 pounds, hazel eyes, a short scruffy beard and glasses and was last seen wearing a nike shirt and nike sandals. He was driving possibly a hon cabernet civic with temporary license plates. Im mark sayre, kpix5. One person witnessed the attempted kidnapping and is talking with police. The girl is home safe with her family tonight. Another measles scare. This time patrons at two berkeley libraries may have been exposed. A person who had the measles visited the west branch last friday and the library on saturday. Symptoms can develop 7 to 21 days after exposure. The chp says an officer did nothing wrong when he pulled the gun on protesters. These images from the december protest in oakland went viral. The officer had every right to do what he was doing. The man and his partner were working undercover in march at a protest against police brutality. Those protesters outed the officers and they were attacked. That is when he drew his gun. Tonight, the chp is warning the officers after a patrol car took a bullet in san jose. The officers were parked along highway 101. One of them was sitting inside the car when the shots were fired. Neither officer was hit. The freeway had to be shut down for 30 minutes while police searched for the shooter. It is not clear where the shots came from. Two security screeners at sfo are accused of a Security Breach of their own. They just got busted in a drug smuggling scheme. Christin . Reporter this all came to light after an informant told the fbi there was a drug smuggling operation here at San Francisco airport involving tsa workers. So the fbi set up a sting. The u. S. Attorneys office said it happened at a Security Check point at San Francisco airport, september 17th. Tsa screener claudio sunax arranged for another screener, amanda lopez to pass a bag from anabo ramirez through an xray machine. In exchange, they would split the 8,000 between them. The plan was hatched in a series of facebook messages. Ramirez would receive a coded text message reading the coffee is ready. When they would walk through the security line acting as if they didnt know each other, the complaint said. Once they arrived in honolulu, they would meet outside the bathroom to exchange the drugs and money. Instead, the three were arrested and charges with bribery and drug smuggling. According to the complaint, fbi investigators did not think this was the first time that workers had allegedly smuggled drugs through security. Tonight, we are learning that Harrison Ford asked where am i after crashing on a santa monica golf course yesterday. As Juan Fernandez reports, agents are applauding the way his crash was handled. Reporter ntsb agents have not had a chance to talk to Harrison Ford after his crash. The fact he survived not having engine power has been the talk of fellow pilots like joe justin, faa examiner. A woman with gang ties was shot and killed by san leandro officers after she allegedly tried to ram them with her cars. Since that shooting, officers have been followed to their homes at least two different times. We do have to take these threats as Credible Threats because we know the history of this east oakland gang. They are a violent serious gang responsible for violent crime. Police say they have the license plate number on a vehicle that followed one of the officers home. Quite a mess tonight in San Francisco. The driver of a cadillac backed right through the front window of a nail salon. After checking to make sure everything was safe, he was allowed to drive back out of the building. You can see the car. Barely a dent. The driver didnt want to talk about the crash, but he was more than willing to show off the hood ornament that survived. Dui check points can certainly save lives by getting drunk drivers off the road. But they can also be inconvenient for sober drivers. Tonight, one lawyer exposes a loophole in the law he says lets you sober or not drive right by the cops without stopping. Reporter at a dui check point on new years eve, police waved the driver through without asking him to roll down his window. The driver, a Florida Attorney holding up a sign in the loophole sobriety law. It is a legal loophole. The check point requires you stop and that you show the police your drivers license. You are doing that. What you are not doing is going beyond what is required in the check point. There are genuinely drunk drivers that need to be taken off the road, but a lot of innocent people get caught up in it and the idea of this is to help people protect themselves by not rolling down their window and asserting their right.
