Lanes. Betty yu was on the freeway during it all. She has since moved to a relatively safer location in downtown oakland. Well check in with her in a moment. Wong shot these 2 look at these protesters right now, a group of a couple dozen or so lighting another bonfire. Do we know where this is . This is in franco gala plaza. Earlier we saw a larger group of people at the plaza. This is a Smaller Group thats starting a small bonfire it looks like. Lets get to Christin Ayers who is live at the plaza right now. Reporter the protests still going strong tonight. You can see hundreds of protesters jamming broadway and 14th. Theyve shut this street down a number of times this evening and made several attempts of walking on the freeway, some of them successful. This is just one of many protests tonight. No indictment, what you going to do . Into the streets into the streets reporter when the verdict was read, protesters dropped to the ground in downtown oakland. They called it a diein, their bodies sprawled on the streets surrounded by chalk outlines to represent the shooting of mike brown. The marching began peacefully enough, though clashes came when protesters attempted to walk onto interstate 880 and police blocked them. The marching continued, mostly peacefully, although there were flashes of vandalism, a a flat glass window shattered at a bank. A plate glass window shattered at a bank. Spray painters covered their faces. A few tried to turn away our cameras, but the protesters tomorrow us this was not about violence or vandalism. This was about justice. The total imjustice of this country is terrible. There injustice of this country is terrible. There is no justice at the moment in the united states. I think Everybody Needs to come down to 14th and broadway and stay, to stand with Michael Brown against that killer pig who just got off tonight. Its important to be out here tonight because it isnt just about mike brown. Its about everyone who has lost a life and so were going to keep fighting until we see some change. You can see a lot of anger there at the plaza. Christin talking to some of the people there tonight protesting and looking down on the situation now, it looks like a small fire there probably near the freeway. Betty yu was on the freeway when protesters went up onto interstate 580 and shut it down. They fully blocked it so no physically blocked it so no traffic could move around. Betty, are you on the phone with us now . Reporter yeah, ken. We are outside city hall. We had to move from the 580, but i can tell you things there were really tense, hundreds of protesters as you mentioned physically shutting down the freeway separated by dozens of officers by only a few feet, many of them shouting justice for mike brown. Temperatures throughout the night tried to divert the crowd, tried to corral them. They have since moved through city hall and im hearing from officers here they are en route to the Oakland Police department. They have been marching ever since this grand jury decision came down. Traffic as you saw came to a complete standstill tonight. Hundreds of people walked onto the freeway. We did see some officers make a few arrests when people tried to jump over that Center Divide and go down the west and eastbound sides of 580. We dont vex act numbers of arrests, but we have exact numbers of arrests, but we have seen some acts of vandalism. We have seen a lot of unruly protesters as well as people that are just frustrated, angry, disappointed and saddened by this decision and they say its opened up a lot of wounds in this community. Betty, i dont know if it was your report earlier, but you said in at least one case people were throwing objects at some of the police that were there, in one case a bottle thrown at an officer, anything like that . Reporter yes. I did see a bottle thrown at an officer on the freeway after an arrest was made. That was a man who tried to climb over the Center Divide and as he did so, a lot of people cheered him on hoping that more people would cross the freeway and shut it down and they did for a short amount of time. Betty live on the phone for us, thank you. She talked to some of the protesters on the freeway earlier this evening. Heres what they had to say. T julia carrie no justice no peace reporter is there any other way to get your point across . No. They wont listen to us. Who do we have to fight for us . We have to fight for ourself. They have the whole system backing them up. We fight for ourself, no justice, no peace. Reporter were you surprised there was no indictment . No. The sad part i wasnt surprised. We know this has been going on every case. Its not surprising to us. Reporter what do you think of the shutdown . You got to do it. You got to speak up for justice. Heres some tweets from people in the thick of that protest. Julia wong shot these photos of protesters climbing onto the eastbound side of 580. Nate says smells like another garbage fire still on 580 off ramp in oakland. This 1 says nothing but cheers from people stuck in the traffic jam on 580, gives me hope on a dark day. Whoa, whoa, whoa. You can hear that just barely in the background the report of gunfire. Now to ferguson, also very dangerous tonight gunshots ringing out right down the street from the cnn reporter. Manufacture the news outlets have had to move their crews to safety including our own. Hours after the protests andria borba is keeping an eye on whats happening in ferguson right now and the grand jury decision that led to all this. Reporter hours after the protest began there are fires burning in ferguson now. You can see these live pictures and at least three cars on fire now. That is in a parking lot somewhere in ferguson. Angry crowds have been out all night long furious over the lack of indictments. Ause exists to harge against office they determined that no probable cause exists to file any charge against officer wilson and returned a no true bill on each of the five indictments. Reporter with those words from the st. Louis county prosecutor Michael Browns mother was reduced to sobs. Eir wishes. Nats protest from the 12 perso nine votes were ne theyre wrong. Reporter moments after the announcement crowds took to the street in the missouri city, some protesting peacefully, others lighting Police Cruisers and businesses on fire, looting other businesses while officers lobbed tear gas. Tonight president obama urged calm and to refocus on browns family, not the grand jury outrage. Michael browns parents have lost more than anyone. We should be honoring their wishes. Reporter from the 12th person grand jury only nine votes were needed to invite officer wilson. Given that its a secretive process you have to weigh very heavily the agenda of any prosecutor that is presenting a case to a grand jury. Reporter kpix5 legal analyst Paul Henderson says the burden of proof the prosecution needed to present is significantly lower than during a courtroom trial. The grand jury is looking for probable cause standard which is different than beyond a reasonable doubt standard which is what were used to in criminal proceedings. Reporter not long after the Prosecutors Press conference the document release in the case approved by a judge began including this photo of the injuries officer wilson suffered at the hands of Michael Brown. Youre looking at live pictures out of ferguson. We are looking at buildings on fire out here. The Fire Department said at this point they are going to let those buildings burn. It is simply to dangerous to put their crews on the street. There are buildings. There are cars on fire. I believe this is a car dealership now somewhere in ferguson. This has been burning quite some time, some really intense flames coming off that now. The brown family issued this statement tonight. We are profoundly disappointed that the killer of our child will not face consequences for his actions. They went on to renew their calls for calm urging protesters to channel their energy toward positive change. In the newsroom andria borba, kpix5. One person tweeted this photo of Michael Brown, sr. After the verdict with the caption im done. A reporter from our cbs affiliate in st. Louis tweeted this photo of an auto zone erupting into flames in the past hour. Meanwhile in new York Police CommissionerWilliam Bratton walked through times square. That looks like blood, but its not. You can kind of see what happened on this instagram video, chaos erupted on the street. The person who posted it says a guy next to him pulled out a bucket full of something resystem bling blood and threw it on bratton and his entourage. We will be following developments from ferguson throughout the night. Stay with kpix5 and www. Kpix5. Com for the very latest developments. D it get past the only on kpix5 we found a license plate in san jose that is so obscene we cant even show you the whole thing on tv. So how did it get past the dmv . What this little pl the clou weve had some rain, but we still need a bit more, a lot more, in fact. Tonight well show you what this little plane is doing up in the clouds to give Mother Nature a hand. , looked like since 8 oclock tonight as protestors d both directions we have an update on the breaking news of the freeway closure in oakland. This is what its looked like since 8 00 tonight as protesters blocked both directions of 580 near grand avenue in oakland. All lanes have since reopened about 10 minutes ago. They were closed for just over four hours. The third since ap there is other news to report on tonight, yet another Security Breach at San Jose International airport, the third since april. 39yearold Miguel Zaragosa got into an area where private jets fly in and out. Employees caught him and took him to an office to wait for police, but he got away. Eventually he stole a maintenance truck. He made it to terminal 2 where Police Arrested him finally. Bay area congressman Eric Swalwell has been talking about the need for tighter airport security. Tonight he is once again calling for sensors on airport perimeters. I see it as being part of the millennial generation to push government tomorrow Brace Technology in all ways and the san jose airport incident i think highlights that. Technology can be a force multiplier to make us safer in the skies. Zaragosa is charged with trespassing and vehicle theft. The other Security Breaches this year, a teenager hopping a fence and stowing away in the wheel well in that flight to hawaii. He survived a fivehour flight. Kpix5 reporter kiet do covers san jose for us. He was driving down the street one day, saw a havent plate on a car and did a double take. Now he speaks and reads vietnamese. Reporter one of the foulest and most vulgar phrases in the vietnam ma these vietnamese vietnamese means blank your mother. We spotted the license plate. Its actually misspelled. The i should be a y, but you get the idea. The driver claimed it was an innocent phrase and we played along. Reporter whats your license plate mean . It means i love your mom. Reporter really . Yeah. Reporter we showed the license around san jose. My gosh. Reporter home to more than 130,000 vietnam 130,000 vietnamese people, more than any other city in the country. The action ran the gamut from disgust to high fives. I said to myself wow, how could anybody miss this . Again, you speak vietnamese, correct . Reporter yes. So therefore if youve got somebody that doesnt speak that language and are trying to figure it out, you can see the difficulty there is in understanding some of those words. Reporter jaime garza from dmv joined us via skype. When it comes to personalized license plates, the department gets 500 applications a day. Drivers must explain and justify the meaning of the phrase and researchers check it across 150 languages using special dictionaries, online translators, even the white houses drug lingo database to weed out drug and gang related terms or hidden sexual references. When they slip through, the department relies on public complaints. Kiet do, kpix5. The dmv is recalling that plate. The east coast could be in for more of this just in time for the thanksgiving travel rush. Theres another winter storm headed that way and it is expected to cause major travel disruptions from new england to virginia. Some areas could get a foot of snow or more. Rian shows we could use just a little bit of that moisture here. Of course, were not getting nearly enough, so cate cauguiran shows us some small planes are heading up to try to ex coe the water to come down. Try to coax the water to come down. Reporter when the weather outside gets frightful, steven helgren lets it snow. We help Mother Nature along a little bit. Reporter hes like a weatherman, title cloud feeder. Cloud are very inefficient with the water they have. All a cloud is is visible moisture and if it gets heavy enough, then precipitation will drop out of the cloud, but it needs something to condense ontop of. Reporter he flies in dangerous conditions through condense onto. Reporter he flies in dangerous conditions, through cold temperatures. If you would imagine yourself floating around in a bowl of milk, thats what it looks like. Reporter going against everything hes learned and what he tells his own flight students. For the most part, i teach my students to not do what im doing. Reporter once hes up there he gives the cloud a silver lining. These are pyrotechnic flares and carry silver iodine. These are burned out. Thats what the pilots have to do to release the silver iodide into the cloud. The hope is the moisture in the cloud will bond to the silver iodide and create snow or rain, but does it work . Sacramento municipality utility district seems to think so. We spend 25,000 a month on it, but if you look at the value of that water, its a small price to pay. Reporter right now californias reservoirs at 50 capacity, every bit helps, but experts say cloud seeding is not the answer to the drought. Id be lying if i said i never joke with my friends about i make it rain, but in reality i dont. We provide the tools for the cloud to become more efficient. Reporter thats because he first needs clouds to seed. Without those hes grounded and the rest of us are tapped out. Cate cauguiran, kpix5. Its kind of hard to put exact figures on it, but engineers say cloud seeding can enhance precipitation by 7 to 15 . Good news for us, precipitation will increase this weekend. Yes. The good point there is you cant make a cloud out of nothing, but you can make a cloud more efficient in giving us rainfall. We could use that, but we have a significant pattern coming up starting on saturday right after the holidays. Everybody is trying to drive back to the bay area. Well see a big time pattern change. We had a big time beautiful sun set earlier today, live Neighborhood NetworkValley Christian Elementary School in dublin, looking down on the tri valley, not a cloud in the sky. We had a gorgeous evening and gorgeous pictures throughout the bay area. Heres whats going on with our live Neighborhood Network, that gorgeous sunset, clear skies and not a single chance of rainfall. Overnight lows chilly in the north bay, napa 39, concord and livermore 42, san jose 43. We received rainfall last week. That bumped up these numbers, rainfall for november now up to 25 in san jose, up to 71 in oakland, still below normal for the month and the year and for the past three years. We could be putting a huge dent in that drought coming up soon. The next several days, tomorrow, big travel day wednesday, thanksgiving thursday, black friday, there is a monster ridge of High Pressure off to the west which will take all the storms and keep them away. That same ridge will move into the perfect spot to steer in a storm saturday and this may open up a tropical tap which will bring in an inch or more of rainfall in two or three days. That begins saturday. Traveling out of the bay area will be fine. Getting back, especially in the Higher Elevations where the snow could be heavy, could be a problem. Were fine with that because we need the rain and the snow and it is coming starting saturday. That said this week will be nice, sunny, mild for traveling. Spare the air day tomorrow, the wetter pattern just in time for the weekend. San jose 71 degrees, low 70s in livermore, walnut creek, venetia, close to 70 in San Francisco tomorrow, novato 69 degrees and lake port 68 with sunshine. It is sunshine for the big travel day wednesday. It is sunshine for thanksgiving. It is sunshine for black friday. Then everything changes on saturday. Rain saturday and sunday and monday. So a long way away. The details will be refined, but now it looks very wet, perhaps the wettest weve seen in over a year. That is great news. We need it. t even in the oakland and ferguson burning tonight after the grand jury ruling, the very latest next. , [instrumental music] its a marshmallow world in the winter. Onto those pablo hats, thee now collectors items. Were going to continue to follow the protests happening both in ferguson and in the bay area. On the left side of your screen is franco gala plaza in oakland where protesters lit a small bonfire surrounded by about a couple dozen people. You can see people of all ages. I saw a couple kids as well in the area. Meanwhile in that area of the plaza were a couple thousand protesters marching near city hall, also in oakland 580 all lanes since reopened, but that only happened about 10 minutes ago. Earlier this evening about 8 00 they blocked off all the lanes near 580 at the grand avenue exit. That was closed off for about four hours. On the right side much more serious situation in terms of fire. That is a used car lot we believe. Several vehicles on fire and as they pull back, a building across the street also on fire. We were told in ferguson the governor of missouri had issued a warning to people not to go out and start this kind of violence, in fact, had sent in the National Guard and increased police patrols. We have seen no National Guard troops and very few police in the area because of gunfire. There has been live gunfire reported. So the tactic is not to engage those people but to let these fires burn out. Thats where we are now. While theres other big news happening in the bay area in the sports world. Much less significant content, but nonetheless giants fans care. Hold onto those pablo hats. They are collector items. The giants third baseman headed to beantown and hes not alone next. ,, the bank of the west sports report is next on kpix5. We reported last week there was a 90 chance that Pablo Sandoval would sign with the boston red sox. That percentage is now 100. Reporter is the panda going to be back . The panda is in my arms. He cant get away if hes in my arms. Hes escaped larrys arms for now. Sandoval agreed to a fiveyear deal with the red sox reportedly worth just under 100 million slightly more than the giants offer, but the damage was done last spring making sandoval a lowball offer. Bottom line, he didnt want to play in San Francisco anymore. Sandoval will be introduced in boston tomorrow with former dodgers slugger Hanley Ramirez and posted this on his Instagram Account with the caption, i see you, hanley. Are you coming . Jim harbaughs Weekly Press Conference had nothing to do with the teams off the field issues but something for which he was clearly thankful. Last week because of 7 feet of snow, so the b that was important points for us right before the half, tight scoring ballgame. Reporter in postgame you said you feel you continue to make good progress. Im sorry. Im still talking football, talking situational football, a little back and forth there. We havent had a lot of that this year. Theres always been other topics. Buffalos Ralph Wilson Stadium unplayable last week because of 7 feet of snow, so the bills moved their game to ford field in detroit with the jets. 56,000 showed up and watched. Scott chandler was shut down. They plan to play their next game at home sunday. Time for the monday night top five, try to catch onto our theme. The National Media had a field day with this catch, receiver odell beckham, jr. Minor bowl got a little out of control. Hyperbole got a little out of control. Folks called it the greatest catch ever. Defensive back helped the ravens knock off the saints. Hard to believe, but that wasnt the biggest catch of the night, robert wood holding onto the ball against his helmet, usc product had his first 100yard game. No . Thats not even the best catch of the football season. Fabian guerra of fairmont state West Virginia pulled it down with a onehand number in october. None of those compare to this catch. Oh, brother. I wish you would leave that thing on the wall and quit bringing it up like its real, the stuffed animal thing, whatever it is.
