Police are using a cell phone surveillance device so top secret Law Enforcement agencies done even like to admit they have it. You think you are private when you are talking on your cell phone. From an undercover car or even strapped to a detectives chest walking down the street, police are using a device called a sting ray to gather the serial numbers of surrounding phones. Any communication you initiate, a voice call, or anything communication, i can monitor that using this device. Reporter security expert andrew beckerrer showed us similar Devices Available to consumers. They work just like a mini cell phone tower hijacking potentially hundreds of phones within their radius. If i have this device running and you come in close proximity to me, i can fool your device into believing that i am your carrier and your phone will connect to my device. Reporter the devices are legal, but andrew says criminals could potentially exploit them. So im talking on the phone. You have used one of these devices to act as a cell tower. My phone is now connecting to one of these devices and my communication is showing up on this laptop . Absolutely. Reporter so how are police using them . Documents we received are heavily reducted. The word sting ray does not come up. It is called Surveillance Technology equipment.
