Tonight a church on the verge of collapse, piles of rubble, heres the very latest after the bay areas biggest earthquake in 25 years. 70 homes and businesses in napa are too dangerous to enter. Theyre red tagged. 200 more are yellow tagged. A lot of people still dont have water. It could be days. Classes at napa unified are canceled for a second day tomorrow. The courthouse is also closed because of that giant hole. More than 200 people were treated for injuries. The one patient who is in Critical Condition is doing better tonight. We have a team of reporters covering the aftermath. Christin ayers is in vallejo where a huge church could collapse. G. Rom inside show th reporter a few hours ago the tower behind me here at First Baptist church was about 4 feet taller than it is now after yesterdays quake. Public works crews tore part of it down. You can see where theyve dropped piles of bricks to the ground to try to stop the tower from collapsing. Pastor al marks and Church Members noticed the damage to the bell tower this morning. Pictures from inside show the plate cracked and separated sections of the nearly 100year old tower. Were just pastors, not engineers, so we immediately called the Fire Department to take a look. Reporter authorities took one look at the splintered brick, evacuated the area and shut sonoma boulevard down for fear the tower would collapse. We wouldnt be closing the street if we didnt think that possibility existed. Reporter engineers decided the only option was to tear the top of the tower down. Brick by brick, row by row passersby watched history fall apart. Its heartbreaking to see because its been here a while. Reporter but the reverend said this is a blessing in disguise. The tower had been seismically retrofitted. It might have saved the whole church because of the retrofit. Reporter and as for the broken bell tower which never housed any bells. The church will just have to live with it. It will still be beautiful. Reporter public works officials tell me their work here is done for the night. They there may need to be additional work done on the rest of the tower. Theyll leave that up to the church to hire engineers to figure that out. In the meantime sonoma boulevard can be reopened once they finish their work here. Christin ayers, kpix5. Tomorrow, the tonight Solano County estimates that damage to county owned buildings alone is 750,000. Tomorrow the board of supervisors will consider a resolution to declare a state of emergency. From what i understand from the neighbor, some of the neighbors that were home, the house shook violently back and forth and then rested and then almost sank like into a sunk hole. Reporter the damage is remarkable, even bizarre. The earthquake didnt just knock the house off its foundation. It shifted it into weird angles. Officials now say this house is uninhabitable. City inspectors spread out across the area red tagging homes that are just too dangerous to go inside. They will likely be torn down. Between cracked roadways and walls and broken gas lines, fema says the earthquake destruction could cost 1 billion to fix. Most homes dont have scenes this dramatic. Still plumber Bernie Bishop believes the damage is more widespread than has been reported. Coming to work today its like every other house looks like its off its foundation. He was able to recover some of his materials, but hes out and so are some others. Most people are inside their homes but dealing with damage as well. A lot of mess to clean up. The guy who was driving it told us that he was involved in a wreck. He was rearended earlier in the week. Ly personal car is in the shop his personal car is in the shop. Hes out with friends on saturday night driving this rental. He decides to park it here because theyd had a few to drink. They took a cab home and the next morning a few hours later the earthquake happened and did this. Luckily he wasnt in the car at the time, i guess. Reporter yeah. He said maybe im having a bad week. Four tvs. Reporter and aquariums, a grandfather clock and broken statue, about the only thing left standing. Oh, my gosh, this got destroyed just in this little area. The city said they couldnt keep up with the volume of junk dropped off by the truckloads. Some even brought whole recycling bins. By the end of the day the city had added five more collection sites. I felt like this is very valuable to a lot of people what they lost a lot of things, but glad that they survived. Down the street a brick building that houses a bail bonds office crumbled on one side. Inside the First Presbyterian church its stained glass windows were blown out and look at this old unreenforced masonry building. It crumbled during the shaking, the area in front of it blocked off for safety. Tonight andria borba tells us one napa family knows all too well about the dangers of fallen masonry. Reporter see the mattress . Thats where 13yearold Nicholas Dillon was hosting a sleepover when the shaking started. He jolted upwards to reach for his friend, yell his name and as he was crawling away with the shaking the brick fell on him. Reporter the soccer players pelvis was crushed. Ondition to fa the doctors have said that for the type of fracture it was a lot of weight. It was a severe fracture, a lot of weight had to fall on him for him to have those types of fractures. Reporter the fireplace was cracked back in 2000 by an earthquake. It was repaired and reenforced but peeled off the wall anyway during sundays shaker. Nicholas is a 4. 0 student and was alert enough to make sure hes academically covered while recovering asking the surgeon prior to his operation nicholas said yes, when can i get a form to tell my school that im not going to be coming in . The napa quake was just one of more than a half dozen 6 or greater quakes this month including two in south america. The increased seismic activity has a lot of people wondering when the next one will strike. The region i would worry about is between hollister and san jose up towards napa. Professor rundull points out the west napa falls has produced seven earthquakes since 1969. The sudden slip called a strike shift can lead to cracks in roads and buildings and thats what has geologists worried.
