Live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. Yeah. That will ruin your day. Bart commuters head home after a hard days work and they find their cars melted. Andria borba is in lafayette tonight. Reporter well ken, liz, sometimes words just fail. You just need to see a melted engine block to realize exactly how things were for a handful of commuters out here in lafayette this evening. Imagine getting off bart to see this. A perfectly good day gone up in flames. I saw in the news there was a fire in the Lafayette Bart parking lot. So i heard it was in the central parking lot, way over there. I was okay because i parked way out here. Reporter not so much. The running boards melted on todds nissan path finder but the car was drivable. The fire started in the engine of this lexus around 2 00 p. M. In the Lafayette Bart station and spread to four other cars leaving one with scorched paint, another with a melted front end, and another with a v shape in the grill from firefighters trying to vent it. So i was surprised to see my car partially melted. Reporter how high did the flames go . The singed leaves go nearly all the way to the top of the lamp post. Commuters were caught off guard by their good fortune. Shocking. I cant believe how lucky i am. Im two cars away and it didnt even touch my car. Reporter others like todd lloyd resigned that today was not ending the way they planned. Just going to file the claim. Reporter now contra costa fire as well as bart Police Working off reports of exactly what happened here. Live in lafayette, andria borba, kpix5. The the chp is looking for the driver who did this on the golden gate bridge. That black camaro came close to pedestrians on the right there as it spun donuts on sunday. Traffic stopped in both directions. Another driver posted the video to instagram. So far, no arrests. Oakland Police Called chp and Alameda County sheriffs deputies for backup as hundreds of people marched downtown. A protest for the Police Shooting in ferguson, missouri and what they are saying is Police Brutality in general. We have seen many protests over the years but never this. Mirrors. Joe vasquez on what that is all about. Hands up, dont shoot. Reporter as hundreds of demonstrators faced off with Oakland Police in rye cot gear, some protesters revealed a new tactic holding up mirrors in the faces of officers. I was holding up a mirror so the police could just look at themselves, especially if they were going to take some sort of action. So they had to acknowledge what they were doing. What do we want . Justice we want that person to take a look at themselves. They dont have to follow a system they dont agree with. Reporter demonstrators say they are marching in solidarity with the people of ferguson. They want to make a statement that officer involved shootings are not just happening in missouri, but they are happening here, too. When ferguson went down, my heart sank again. Another senseless killing and another cover up scheme again trying to demonize the young man. Reporter joe vasquez, kpix5. And in ferguson tonight, another round of protests, but crowds are smaller, things are a bit calmer. Some people say u. S. Attorney general eric holders arrival in ferguson is having a good influence. He met with everyone from students to fbi agents investigating the Police Shooting of michael brown. A grand jury began hearing evidence in that case today. Demonstrators are calling for the arrest of the officer who shot down, but a decision on whether to charge the officer could take several months. Well, it is video like this that touches the nerves. This is a Police Officer in suburban saint louis pointing a semi automatic rifle at a peaceful protester. Sergeant had to force him to lower it. He has been suspended from the force. Highlights have highlighted not just Race Relations but the fact that Many Police Departments are using military equipment. Look at what the college town of davis is getting. That is a 700,000 armored vehicle. The Police Department got it for free thanks to uncle sam. It is supposed to be used only in extreme situations, but the mayor isnt sold. I just dont see how that tank belongs in the city of davis. For one thing, it is not a tank. And when you need this type of equipment, you have to have it. Well the davis Police Department says it is not about the equipment. It is how it is used. The military has been handing out its surplus for years. It is up to the police if they want it. Tonight, San Francisco giants won tarp gate. Check this out. This is the grounds crew in chicago trying and trying to cover the field during a rainstorm in the middle of last nights game. Oh, we cant get it. It is too hard to pull it across. The umpires finally called the game and that counted as a loss for the giants. The giants said hey wait a minute. They protested and guess what . They won. Thats a big deal right dennis . Well it is. The giants were trailing 20 in the 5th inning. As you know, a game has to go fourandahalf innings to be considered a game. The rule basically said a mechanism had to fail for the game to be suspended. Baseball ruled there was a malfunction of a mechanical device, the device being the spool that held the tarp. The grounds keepers inability to deploy the tarp, they say, was caused by the failure to properly wrap and spool the tarp after its last use. As a result, the infield was flooded due to the failure of the mechanical device and the game should be considered suspended. Instead of a loss, it will be continued tomorrow. I thought we had a strong case. We felt very strongly about it. I just, you know, im thankful and grateful that they were open minded. And i dont know whats going to happen. We may lose it, but at least we will finish the game. Im not convinced the rule was properly followed. The spool is not a mechanism. But you know what . They found a way to get it right and thats what they did. Some people said it looked like the grounds crew was doing it on purpose, not getting the tarp out to give the cubs an advantage. And thats a pretty serious charge. Well, i dont buy it, but that may be one of the reasons that they found a loophole to allow the game to continue. The game should be continued. That is what they did. They got it right. And they will do that tomorrow. Tomorrow at 2 00. Thanks dennis. Well, about half an hour ago, we learned the body of a man found in the southern sierra this afternoon is that of a fremont teacher, gregory muck had not been heard of since going by a hike by himself in Kings Canyon National park. He was supposed to return home sunday, but didnt show up. He spent the last year teaching at gomes elementary. Mr. Muck was a teacher at gomes last year and much beloved though he was only there for a year. He taught second grade and was very active in Environmental Issues and gardening with students and recycling program on campus. Mucks parents say he was an avid and experienced hiker. Tonight the National Park service confirmed the body was muck and it looks like he fell in some steep terrain. Looks like it should be another two or three days before we know if a patient in sacramento hospital has the ebola virus. That patient is being kept at this kaiser hospital. They are not saying much except the person recently went to west africa. If it is ebola, the chances that this patient will spread it are very slim. Also tonight, this is how the west african country of liberia is dealing with the ebola outbreak. Police in riot gear have sealed off poor neighborhoods in the capital and wont let anyone leave. Almost 2500 people have been infected in west africa. More than 1300 have died. We learned today, u. S. Special forces tried to rescue a number of kidnapped americans in syria this summer, but the mission failed. One of those hostages they hoped to rescue, james foley, the man isis militants beheaded. The world is shaped by people like jim foley and the overwhelming majority of humanity are appalled by those who killed him. The video of the 40yearold journalist being beheaded was released yesterday and the video is authentic. Isis says it is retaliating for u. S. In such a positive way. The president says the u. S. Will continue to confront isis. The pentagon confirmed more than a dozen new strikes on isis targets. Well, the beheading was horrific, but many people were quick to share it on social media. That has twitter telling users, tweet that kind of stuff and lose your account. Reporter the video 40year old john foleys execution to gruesome to show. Once isis posted it, it made the internet rounds but now twitter says it wants to stop it. They immediately sprung into action. Reporter today, the ceo tweeted this letting users know if you post any graphic video or photos related to the isis youtube clip, your account will be suspended. What it showed is they are a lot more aggressive. And they are trying to again, react to these problems that exist on their service and get to it very quickly. Reporter it has been a big week for twitter and its approach to violence and bullying. Just yesterday, twitter said it will take down photos of anyone who died if their family asks. This comes a week after Zelda Williams made the announcement she would be closing down her twitter account after graphic photo shopped images of her late father Robin Williams were sent to her. So yes, twitter is upping the ante, but the question users are wondering is could more be done . This is a huge step forward what happened this week. The next step is really to build up these teams and try to deal with this stuff as quickly as possible. Reporter but twitter also has to keep up with isis. They successfully use social media to recruit more members. In the case of john foley, the damage already done as the family tried to grieve in peace. He was just a hero. Reporter in San Francisco, cate caugurian, kpix5. Now twitter has its own set of ruling on censoring violence, but they are less comprehensive compared to facebook. The people who run ideal market are going after a man they say has stolen from them three times. Monday, he was caught on surveillance video. He has taken the first bottle, sticking it in his jacket. Reporter when workers tried to call the police on the nonemergency line, they got a busy signal. The market has been targeted over and over again. Like this time in 2012. Employees claimed police wouldnt even look at their surveillance video. There is no Police Resources out here to take care of stuff like this. Reporter so they resorted to taking care of betty crime themselves. It is a sentiment Council Member libby has heard repeatedly. People feel like they are out there on their own without support from their own city. I dont agree or condone the whole vigilante thing. It is important for employers to recognize. Reporter the case was brought on by a group of Southern California customer servicemannagers. They have been abusing employees for a while now. Reporter this is a clear victory for employees. As we went through the last couple of decades, employers have cut back on how much they are willing to reimburse people for what it is they use and that appears to be contrary to the law. Reporter alex montoya believes using his phone for work costs him about 2,000 over the last few years. To hear that this ruling came down that would require employers to reimburse employees, what do you think of that . It is exciting. I mean, it is extra money in your pocket. Reporter this case only applies to cell phone calls, but experts say it could open the door to reimbursement for all personal devices, data, and apps used partially for work.
