Live from the cbs bay area studios, this is kpix5 news. A big rig jackknifes a muni train. A bus plows into a dump truck, a San Francisco street becomes a triage center, good evening, im ken bastida. And im veronica de la cruz. We have Team Coverage beginning with andria borba. First crash happened right here. Reporter it was a 38 line bus. It all started with a dump truck and that bus. It sounded like. And everybody goes front. Reporter San Francisco police say a dump truck driver slammed on the brakes, the bus swerved to avoid a crash but ended up rear ending another dump truck. Next thing you know, we get a big jolt, boom. And im like oh my god the front window is out. Reporter then collision number two. This time, it was a big rig that hit a muni tline train. 40 passengers were hurt. 23 were taken to the San Francisco hospital. And the commute was sent into disarray. After we were able to get it back on the rail, and out of the way, now we are doing tests to make sure we can operate the train safely throughout the night. Reporter now, the bus driver and the crash here on gary street has actually been tested for drugs and alcohol as is mta protocol in this case. Crashes are still under investigation at this point, though they seem to have a clearer picture in the bay view crash. Andria borba, kpix5. Thank you. Joe vasquez is at San Francisco general tonight. And he has more on the story. Joe . Reporter ken, i talked to one of the patients brought here to general. He told me he was on the phone with his girlfriend when the train crashed. I was in the phone with my girl. Somebody put on the brakes, bam reporter Anthony Barry tells me it was a very chaotic scene on third street where his crash took place. There was triage taking place. There was confusion about which ambulance would go there. You could hear nit the voice of the First Responders this was no ordinary day. Im still working on multiple patients here. Advise. We have another red alert at third on the other side of the street. Reporter two red alerts. Two major muni crashes within seven minutes of each other. City emergency officials thought they might have as many as 40 patients to transport, so the Fire Department activated intercounty mutual aid asking all public and private hospitals in the city to help. We have 43, two yellows. Need eight additional ambulances and we need a muni bus. Reporter it was very chaotic, but very professional. There is only slight confusion as the ambulances tried to figure out which hospitals would take their patients. That would be great. A lot of hollarring and a lot of pushing and a lot of people running across the street. Here at the hospital, there werent any problems im aware of. We do train for this. About a year ago, we received 53 patients in our emergency room in one day from the Asiana Airlines accident. Reporter today, a total of 23 patients went to five area hospitals. Ken, as far as we can gather, you know, yes, there was confusion and chaos. There is always going to be. They train for this sort of situation. It does not appear that anybody was significantly delayed. Thats good news joe. Joe vasquez reporting live from sf general. And in san jose, this vta bus caught fire on highway 101 this afternoon. Luckily, only the driver was on board when it burst into flames. He pulled over and got out before it got any worse. The flames spread to the dry grass growing along the road. Firefighters quickly put that fire out. Vta says it hasnt had any problems before with this bus. Tonight a summer road trip to the bay area ended like this. A man vacationing in San Francisco chased after his van after he witnessed it being stolen. Josh romeo turned on his go pro as he tried to chase down the thief, but the thief got away. He and his girlfriend are in San Francisco visiting from michigan. We have been traveling in it for like the past 11 days i think now. And i mean, it just had everything that we were with. We are thousands of miles away from home. And borrowed a bunch of stuff from our friends and family. So, it just has everything that we have. Police told josh they are hopeful they will find the van. One mysterious google project is sunk. The barge they had parked in maine is being sold now for scrap. But google didnt say why it was sold. Tonight, an iraq war veteran injured in a protest is making serious allegations against a Police Officer. Here is christin ayers. Reporter i think the officers actions were very malicious. Reporter scott olsen lashes out at the Police Officer who threw a tear gas grenade at him. He recently got his job back. Olsen had his skull fractured and brain permanently damaged. He claims officer rosh had killed three people while on duty with the department and bragged about it on facebook. Reporter they have brought a killer back to the force. In that act, they let officers know they can kill people. Reporter but the Oakland Officers Association depended rosh saying he is a phenomenal officer. Olsens lawyers say this is a pattern that 11 of the last 15 terminations at the Oakland Police department have later been reversed. It really points to a problem with trying to reform the police department. Even in a highly publicized case like this one in a wanton act of violence against a helpless person cant stick. Tonight, gaza is supposed to be in a 72 hour cease fire but it collapsed in just 90 minutes. Smoke and explosions could be seen in the city of rafa. Israel resumed shelling gaza because they broke the cease fire and captured a soldier. Palestinians say the soldier story is a lie and israel was just looking for an excuse. A captured soldier would be a bargaining chip for hamas. Four words from the president are getting a lot of attention tonight. We tortured some folks. Okay, now listen to them in context. He has been charged with arson and making meth. Tonight, police are in a stand off with a wanted parolee who ran into a home after allegedly killing a man. It is happening in an la suburb. He was holed up in the house with a hostage. When they got there, they found a body lying in the front lawn. They exchanged fire with the suspect. A swat team is there trying to convince him to release the hostage. Hard to believe it has been 20 years since a gruesome murder in Castro Valley. The victim, a 14yearold girl named jenny lin. The killer was never found. Kpix5s betty yu on how new leads could be generated. Reporter this is what would make jenny smile. Undying support for her family 20 years after her murder. Every year, inside the concert hall, we feel the feeling of jenny still here. She is still listening, still playing the music with her friends. We just feel so content and so grateful. Reporter jennys life was cut short at 14. In 1994, her father found her tied up and stabbed to death in the bathroom of their Castro Valley home. The killer is still out there and there saw 100,000 reward for an arrest. We are takeing the most Current Technology to reevaluate the evidence that has been collected 20 years ago.
