Tonight, he describes just how easy it was. Our betty yu is the only reporter he is telling his story to. Reporter i have been talking with yahya for several weeks. Right now he is in a foster home in santa clara county. He says he feels misunderstood. He knows what he did when he hopped the fence at the san jose airport and it is a miracle he is alive. Reporter did you think you had any other options but to jump on a plane . No. Reporter yahya abdi stowed away on a plane to maui for fiveandahalf hours. He talks about that journey using google chat. He was sitting on the shell of the plane. He covered his ears as it took off. I could see the clouds through the little holes. Reporter you could see the holes, you could see the ocean and clouds below you . Yeah. Reporter was it scary . No. Reporter yahya abdi says he passed out shortly after. Moments after, he woke up and dropped to the tarmac. He was dizzy, hungry, and couldnt hear anything. Was your vision okay . Was it clear . I couldnt see. Reporter you couldnt see clearly . Everything was yellow. Reporter now he is doing okay physically. What do you want people to know about what you did why you did . I only did it because. I didnt want to live with my step mom. I wanted to find my mom. I havent seen her since i was young. Reporter he says he hasnt seen his birth mom since he was seven years old and desperately misses her. She is in a refugee camp in eat open ethiopia. So many people say why did he did that . Why did he jump on a plane, crawl into a wheel well . What do you say to those people . I would say it wasnt highly secured. Reporter he spent the night in the wheel well. It was the tsas fault, not mine. Reporter did you just hop the fence . Was it that easy . Yeah. They make it easy for me. Reporter these days, he is spending his time doing normal teenager things. I have been going to the Movie Theater and playing video games. It is interesting he blames the tsa. Reporter he does. He just says that it was way too easy. I talked to representative eric swallow tonight. He says there have been five major Security Breaches in the last six years and he is pushing for tougher standards and tougher technology at airports that would send alerts. And that is one airport of thousands in the United States. You have to believe not all of them are secure. Thats right. That is what he is hoping for that changes will happen at the san jose airport and around the bay area and country. Betty, thank you very much for that. Tonight, we have exclusive new information about the oakland ager at the center of a legal fight after doctors declared her brain dead. Joe . Reporter we are talking about jahi mcmath. We have learned her where abouts. Early on, there was a lot of talk about this. A lot of speculation on where she might be. She is in fact in a hospital at saint peters Childrens Hospital in new brunswick, new jersey. That is about 30 miles from new york in the pediatric intensive care unit receiving around the clock care. Back in january, jahi mcmaths family arranged to remove the 13yearold from the oakland Childrens Hospital where she was declared brain dead after a tonsil surgery. Her new location was undisclosed until now. This hospital is sponsored by the catholic church. I cant confirm anything. Reporter jahis family Attorney Says he cant confirm her location, but insists her condition has gotten better so much better that he says her family would now consider moving her out of the hospital icu. It has been a very compassionate facility. Whether or not this facility thinks it is the right facility for continued long term care, i would say that may be a discussion that i could see potentially happening because of jahis improvement. She may need a lower level of care. Jahi responds to cold stuff. In this video leased earlier this year, jahis foot reacts to an ice cube. Her improvement now is more advanced. He has watched her look in the direction of her mothers voice and even move specific parts of her body her mom asked her to use. Several experts looked at jahi before declaring her brain dead. They even issued her a death certificate. If they tested her now, it may show Something Different than when jahi was under the most acute stress of the swelling of her brain and the lack of food and nutrition. The family is confident that they have seen signs of jahi responding to voice commands and acting in a way much different than she did at oakland. Reporter she mentioned saint peters hospital, they would not confirm her presence either. Her family reached out to the media early on, but they did not respond to any request for comment. Joe, it is interesting she is in new jersey because the law is on the familys side there. Reporter exactly. New jersey is one of the few states that allows the family to reject the diagnosis of brain dead. You make a religious objection and say my loved one is not dead and they cant take you off life support. Thank you joe. A close call the night in san jose, all because of a barbecue. The back of this house on cuerco court went up just before 7 00 this evening. It started on the grill, but it quickly spread to the attic doing Severe Damage to the roof. Because it was placed, under the eves, that is right into the attic. Nobody was hurt, the fire also damaged the back of the house as well. We spotted something unusual flying over San Francisco tonight. Take a look at this. Five black hawk helicopters. The faa is not commenting on branch of military they are from, but a big exercise is underway at camp roberts. It may have something to do with that, but we dont know for sure. Tonight, militants have seized the biggest oil refinery. Iraq is asking the United States for help and they are talking about air strikes. U. S. Military aircraft including war planes from the uss bush are now flying around the clock Surveillance Missions over iraq. At the same time, joint chiefs chairman general Martin Dempsey says they asked for air strikes against the insurgence that control much of northern and western iraq. We have request from the iraq government for air power. Reporter but air strikes have been put on hold due to a lack of good enough intelligence to target them without harming innocent civilians or iraq troops. It is not as easy as looking at an iphone video of a convoy and striking it. Reporter to get better intelligence, the feint gone is sending about 100 Army Green Berets into iraq. David martin, cbs news, the pentagon. The president has promised not to send u. S. Troops back into combat, but they will be armed and they will be at risk. Back here at home, if you think gas prices are bad right now, just wait. They could spike much higher and not just because of what is going on in iraq. Theres a proposal in the u. S. Senate to raise the federal gas tax 12 cents a gallon. That is on top of an extra 15 cents a gallon that we will be paying next year when a Global Warming law goes into effect. One driver we spoke to tonight says it is not just gas that will be more expensive. The price of food would go up. It costs more money to get the food to the stores. The truckers. Everything. Everything will go up. All the clothes. Pretty much, it will put a tariff on everything. Another driver said he wouldnt mind because the federal tax money would help fix the roads. Tonight, this has to be one of the worst parking jobs we have ever seen. A car was left hanging out of a garage in los angeles after it crashed through the barrier. The driver wasnt hurt, but he is probably pretty embarrassed. Well tonight, the bay areas best kept secret revealed. Where homes are selling 50 over the asking price and they are still a bargain. The house was on fire, but this bay area guy had no fear. He jumped onto the roof with a hose even though he is partially blind. , safeway gets that staying on budget can be a real bear. Thats why theyve got lots of ways to save. Real big club card deals, the safeway app and gas rewards. This week, fresh driscolls strawberries are perfectly sweet and just 1. 99 a pound. Hadnt done this he jumped on his roof and ua a fire destroyed two homes in sunny vale and would have destroyed another if a guy hadnt done this. He jumped on the roof and used a garden hose to douse the flames burning ten feet away. The cops threatened to arrest them and the firefighters screamed at him. They were not putting any water on my house. They were putting the water on the other side of the house. There is no water on my side of the house. If i didnt put water up, my house would have gone up, too. I forced them to water my side. I said you wart water my house or i am not coming down. The house was spared. The man was able to save his guide dogs. He is blind in his right eye. A neighbors cell phone video shows the moments just after the fire broke out on lantana drive this morning. The men in orange shirts you see are part of a tree trimming crew that happen to be working nearby. They knocked on doors and alerted the people inside. I woke them up. They said wheres the fire at . The fire is inside the house. Please gut the house. We have to go, we have to go. That was on fire. She wouldnt listen to me. She was going back and forth, back and forth. The Tree Trimmers rescued a toddler from one of the burning homes. No one was hurt. If you think house prices are going up like crazy in San Francisco, look at what is happening in oakland. According to zip realty, the median home price has shot up 23 compared to 14 in San Francisco. And our cate caugurian found one neighborhood where prices have really gone through the roof. Its a great feeling. Houses are selling like pancakes. Reporter the cat is out of the bag. We worked on this neighborhood for a long time to make it oaklands best kept secret and we want to keep it a secret. Reporter it is not a secret anymore in the real estate market. The durant area of east oakland is the place to buy. Homes here are selling for 50 more than last year. There were holmes a year ago selling for 100,000. Reporter this house is on the market for two days. Got about 15 bids. One nearly 40,000 above the asking price. At an asking price of 199,000, 40 grand is a pretty big profit. You want to see that, you want to see, you know, after coming out of that big old slump in the economy, something positive is happening. Offers came like this. Within an hour or two of people looking at it. They came back with their contractors. They came back with, you know, hey, i want it. No, i want it. Reporter brenda dixon lives across the street and has lived here at least 50 years. She says Family Oriented Community is the big draw. We all look out for each other, we all feel safe here. People are buying there and living there and fixing it up. You are starting to see the neighborhood change. Reporter he says he doesnt expect this jump to last so sellers should embrace it now while they can. Cate caugurian, kpix5. And zip realty says the price spike is because many people are looking to buy in San Francisco, simply can no longer afford to. A special art project has gained a lot of fans and tonight, theres a push to save it. We are talking about the bay bridge lights. There they are. Theres a big Fund Raising Campaign to keep the lights on. People handed over 150 a piece for the party on pier 5. It brings together community in the spirit of love in the way no other have. The goal is to raise 1. 2 million to keep the lights on past march. It will take another 11 million to keep the show going another decade.
