But theres still a long way to go. The boat is hundreds of miles from san lucas. Rescuers are now on board treating the baby. Kpix5s betty yu is live at Moffett Federal Airfield where crews are ready to help at a moments notice. Betty . Reporter thats right liz. The airmen here are monitoring every move. They are in constant communication with the rescuers and the family aboard the sailboat. The kaufmans are doing okay and they are asleep. The Air National Guard is keeping close watch on a complex rescue mission off the coast of mexico from the command center. A team of medics left Moffett Federal Airfield thursday and parachuted into the pacific motion to save baby lyra. The oneyearold was seriously ill aboard the rebel heart. Reporter helen says it started here at her home. Concord Police OfficerMatthew Switzer approached her last october and asked her if he was taking medication. He wanted my pills. My pain pills. Reporter powerful painkillers that helen was using after having a herniary moved. He claimed he was using the pills to train his police car to sniff out the drugs. He wanted to take them down to the car and see if his dog would recognize them. Reporter so she handed the pills over, but when switzer brought them back. Half of them were gone. Reporter it was the beginning of a nightmare. The Contra Costa Sheriffs Office has charged switzer with stealing pills and elder abuse. Helen told kpix5 she only said that she agreed to give him the pills out of fear,. He grabbed my purse from me. One time, he took my keys and then locked the door of my apartment and went in, got my pills. He is a big man. What could i do . Three defendants were added to the case and yee faces an additional charge. You want to add in things like attempt and conspiracy to cover all the bases so even if you cant prove that fraud took place, you can prove they tried to commit a fraud in the first place. More than 900 people attended a Funeral Service today for a bay area marine killed by a drunk driver. Marines carried the casket of Lance Corporal andrew silva into Saint Anns Church in union city. Silva was just 23 years old and survived by his wife and young son. He had just returned from active duty in afghanistan. He was riding a motorcycle mar 25 when he was hit. Tributes mark the crash site in fremont. People are offering donations to help silvas family. 25yearold alexander yahn was driving through a red light when he hit silva. He is facing murder charges. Ten out of the 16 people injured in the shooting in fort hood are out of the hospital. The six others are said to be improving. According to a report obtained by cbs news, the test concluded that the Technology Enhanced security and safety on commercial aircraft. U. S. Navy jets like this fa18 have used deployable black boxes for two decades. But nearly three years after the tsa study, no u. S. Commercial airline has installed the technology. If it is good enough for the navy, why isnt it good enough for the commercial planes . Thats the question i have been asking ten years. Reporter North Carolina congressman david price has sponsored legislation that would put the black boxes on planes going long distances. All three times, the legislation died. Cost could be the factor. It is estimated to be 60,000 to put it in a new plane, but price says that is nothing compared to the cost of an underwater search for wreckage. They prevent crooks from wiping the phone without a user name and password. While the current features on both phones come preinstalled, you still have to opt in and turn them on. They are calling on Tech Companies to go further to disincentivize criminals with thefts like these.
