Come within seconds of gettg killed on the caltrain live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. What a close call. Check this out. Tonight we see a guy come within seconds of getting killed on a caltrain tracks. Andria borba has the video. You got to wonder what was this guy thinking. At the redwood train passes and the reporter clearly this guy was thinking waiting another five seconds to cross those tracks would have just about killed him when, in fact, not waiting nearly did. Ile someone stes one of their ni this is what the luckiest man in redwood city looks like. Caltrain released this Surveillance Video of a near miss at the redwood city station. One train passes and then about a minute into the video with the guard arms down and with the express train bell barreling ever closer a group scampers across the tracks and then one more guy makes a run for it. Feet, possibly inches from death. In a release on their blog caltrain says incidents like these throw the whole system into a slowdown as the near misses have to be investigated throwing everyones commute into chaos while someone else wastes one of their nine lives. Now its not like there arent, in fact, signs all over these caltrain stations warning people to stay off the tracks, watch out for trains. That video was taken in the middle of train around 9 a. M. , could have thrown everything into severe chaos had that man been hit. Caltrain says dont think you can outrun these trains. This guy got very, very lucky. Andria borba, kpix5. A couple hours ago Concord Police arrested this guy they say killed a mother of five in a hit and run. Kyle larson is 20 years old and lives in antioch. The woman was walking on willow pass road in concord last night when a pickup truck jumbled the curb and slammed into her and the driver sped off. We spoke to Concord Police moments ago. Were just really grateful to the public and media for helping us with this one. We were getting tips all day. Parsons car has been confiscated. Police are trying to figure out why he jumped the curb. We learned its taking some bay area firefighters longer than usual to get suited up into their fire trucks while responding to an emergency. Only on 5 betty yu shows us the problem. Reporter its actually the way some fire stations like the one behind me are designed. Tonight the department rolled out a new standard for Response Time and certain firefighters will have a tougher time meeting that target. He door. Sot deputy chief jose fire departme its definitely the furthest spot. So you need to be on your game if youre going to get to the rig. Reporter if you sleep in this corner at station no. 1, youre in for a long walk. Captain shawn levins took me along the path down a hallway, a flight of stair and to the bay. It took us 56 seconds. Its definitely a Long Distance to travel prior to getting ready moving out the door to an emergency. Its one of the many hurdles we face. Reporter now those who work at a handful of newer stations designed this way face a new hurdle. The department standard has been two minutes called turnout time. The clock starts once firefighters are alerted to an emergency and ends the moment theyre out the door. Just a few hours ago that turnout time dropped to 80 seconds, the national standard. It challenges our ability to meet our turnout time goals. Reporter there are no shortcuts for getting around the layout of newer fire stations where the beds are farther from the trucks and engines. Deputy chief saying this was done for a reason. Theyre built green which is some infrastructure in the buildings that didnt used to be there. Theyre built for privacy and with exhaust conditions. So that really has changed the architecture of things and creates a really long walk. Reporter the department points to other factors that really explain why its firefighters show up late to emergencies. More calls, less money and consequently fewer firefighters. Live in downtown san jose, betty yu. San jose has 34 fire stations about 1 4 of them designed with newer layouts. A man accused of trying to go to the middle east to fight alongside terrorists. Joe vazquez tracked down the guys friends tonight. Reporter at his Community College in stockton fellow students cant believe 20year old Nicholas Teausant is accused of trying to be a terrorist. Talk about mathematics. Really liked racing into fast cars. Reporter the fact that hes been arrested. Bizarre. Reporter this is video of teausant last week interviewed about a different subject just two days before he left town. I avoid confrontation as much as possible. Reporter he had recently converted to islam and also happens to be in the process of being discharged from the Army National guard. The feds say teausant was on his way to syria this weekend to fight on the side of isi formerly known as alqaeda in iraq which the u. S. Considers to be a terrorist group. Teausant boarded the amtrak in lodi, took it to seattle and got on a bus to the Canadian Border where he was arrested by the feds. He admitted nothing in court, but the fbi says teausant made a lot of noise on the internet where he claimed he was going to blow up the los angeles subway system this past new years. He wrote dont get me wrong. I despise america and want its downfall. While hocking his laptop to pay for his trip, he solid it to an undercover fbi agent who found evidence teausant was searching for bomb making instructions online. The fbi insists teausant was serious about his syrian adventure, but he also admitted he didnt know how to get there. Hes not a terrorist. Hes not evil. He does not do mean things at home. He doesnt hurt people. Reporter teausants mother lives near lodi and told a reporter off camera she believes her son got mixed up with the wrong crowd. If you know nicholas, you know the real nicholas. I just want to tell my son that i love him and i just pray that people will understand that just because what theyre reading doesnt make it so. Reporter in lodi joe vazquez, kpix5. Teausant is formally charged with attempting to provide Material Support to a foreign terrorist organization. If convicted, he could spend 15 years in prison. Tonight were getting a look at the two pilots before they boarded that missing malaysian jetliner. Here they are passing through airport security, one right after the other after a quick patdown on their way. Tonight the story is changing again. Malaysian authorities revealed a new timeline of what happened and when. Bob orr has that and what investigators dug up on the pilots. Reporter investigators want to determine if the Flight Simulator found in the captains home was ever used to practice radar evading maneuvers and landings at remote airstrips. Sources say a preliminary analysis found nothing up usual in the simulator or the pilots background. Hes a married father of three and the Flight Instructor with more than 18,000 a Flight Instructor with more than 18,000 hours of experience, but the sequence of events is focusing suspicion on zahari and his coplot fariq hamid who has just over 2,700 hours flying described as a quiet religious man planning to marry. Malaysian officials said it was fariq who uttered the last words heard from flight 370. All right good night he said at 1 19 a. M. March 8th. Two minutes later at 1 21 the transponders quit sending the jets location, altitude and speed to controllers flying at 35,000 feet en route to beijing. Around the same time during a of had hour window from 1 07 to half hour window from 1 07 to 1 37 the plane stopped sending Text Messages and Engine Performance messages to the airline. This would normally suggest a catastrophic event and crash, but military radar and satellites indicate the jet flew another seven hours turning away from its flight path heading west towards the indian ocean. Bob orr, cbs news washington. The plane has been missing longer than any other commercial airliner, more than 10 days, and the search is now the largest in aviation history. Area that covers 7 n square miles. Tonight experts estimate that its final location was somewhere along one of these red lines. Thats appear area that covers 7 million square miles. To the north the plane would have flown mostly over land. To the south over water. Today the u. S. Navy searched 27,000 square nautical miles of open ocean with a plane developed to detect submarines. It uses radar and hitech cameras to peer deep into the water. Somebody said hey, we might see something. We immediately turned back to that object. Then we have our camera zoom in and depending on the altitude we might come down to 200, 300 feet and then get everybodys eyes focused on that object. Today the crew spotted a big oil slick, noted its location, took pictures and sent the information to malaysian authorities. Vice President Joe Biden is heading to europe tonight to discuss the crisis in ukraine with leaders in poland and lithuania. It struck just after 8 oclock. We had a small earthquake in the bay area tonight, a magnitude 2. 3 just off the coast about 7 miles southeast off daly city. The 4 by 4 earthquake that took l. A. This morning is the biggest that area has experienced in years. Earthquake, were having an earthquake. Okay. It appears to have stopped. Were going to jump right now to the u. S. Geological survey. Lets get right on that now. That felt very close. Earthquake. Were having an earthquake. Yeah, the shaking happened about 6 30 this morning as los angeles tv stations were live on the air, many of them. Video has gone viral now, but tonight the usgs says they did the right thing. Seismologists knew it was about to happen. So why werent the rest of us warned ahead of time . Tonight dave bryan finds out. Reporter this is what cal tech seismologist tom heaton heard early in the morning seconds before his home swayed as the california earthquake rolled through. I was sitting there at breakfast and my laptop computer told me the shaking was coming. The system gave us a couple seconds of warning, which is kind of what we would he we would expect in this distance. The magnitude was a little off, but it worked notifying ahead of time before the shaking arrived. Reporter the problem was the rest of us didnt get any warning the earthquake was coming because although Governor Brown signed a law last september officially endorsing the system, no Funding Source was identified to build and maintain it. We need to come up with the annual expenses of maintaining the stations running the software, getting the telemetry and a big earthquake tomorrow, the funding might show up the next day. Reporter cal tech seismologist lucy jones, the earthquake queen of southern california, says in a major quake along the san andrea fault the l. A. Area could expect a warning 30 seconds or more before the shaking hits the south land. The author of the bill signed by Governor Brown last year says that early alert system similar to others already in widespread use in countries like japan, romania and mexico could save a lot of lives. The technology has proven to work and california is certainly the literal and figurative epicenter to seismic activity in the world. Its almost an embarrassment we dont have this system up and running. Reporter by one estimate it would cost about 80 million to finish building and operating the system statewide, but several other countries already have similar systems in wide use including japan, mexico and romania, not all technological giants.
