Live from the cbs bay area studios this is kpix5 news. Out what it is before ito something mysterious is paralyzing bay area kids. Tonight doctors are scrambling to figure out what it is before its too late. Betty yu standing by at Lucile PackardChildrens Hospital at stanford, ground zero for this investigation. Betty . Reporter thats right. Doctors here are tracking these poliolike illnesses that leave kids with sudden weakness in their limbs. Theyre looking at the most severe cases, those kids that develop these symptoms within 48 hours. They say whats going on is not an epidemic, but they want to stress that once these kids are diagnosed these diseases are very difficult, if not impossible, to treat. Little sophia loves to dance and it shows. You can hardly tell that her moves are limited until you notice her left arm. Lefty is my favorite arm. Reporter she calls it lefty and its the result of a mysterious poliolike illness. Its affecting as many as 25 children in california. In some cases kids first showed symptoms of a common cold. We were not exactly clear what is the agent. We suspect its a virus explaining these cases. It can affect one or more limbs and the prognosis weve seen so far is not good. Most of the children weve seen have not recovered use of their arm or leg. Reporter sophia first developed what doctors thought was asthma two years ago. Aerophore days in the hospital it turned into Something Else after four days in the hospital it turned into Something Else. Sophia went to grab the toy after seeing her doctor and i saw her left hand mid grasp stop. Reporter the family later turned to Lucile PackardChildrens Hospital at stanford where doctors are now taking a hard look at five bay area cases. All the kids had been vaccinated against polio. We had a very healthy boys that are very healthy and sophia was healthy until that point. We did not realize what we were in store for. This has a lot of signs of polio but to be clear this is not polio according to the doctors, right . Reporter exactly. They say this is definitely not polio. They believe that what the culprit here is something called enterovirus. Its a family of viruses that does include polio and newly identified strains of this virus have been linked to poliolike outbreaks. So they do have theories this virus could have traveled from there to california. Just a few hours ago we learned eight patients were treated recently at Childrens Hospital in oakland. Tonight were hearing from people in a bar where a woman was attacked because she was wearing the new google glass. Joe vazquez is outside that bar tonight. Joe . Prepare i talked to several people who said things were reporter i talked to several people who said things were going well friday night into saturday morning. People were trying on those super hitech glasses, but at some point somebody expressed displeasure of the possibility of being videoed by the glasses and thats apparently when it got ugly. You want to extend for videos. Reporter in in Youtube Video sarah slocum is showing a friend how to use her google glass at molotovs. Heres a quote from her facebook page. Omg, so youve never believe this but i got verbally and physically assaulted and robbed last night in the city, had things thrown at me because of some google glass haters. She said someone stole her purse and phone. Her facebook friends have been extremely sympathetic and supportive. The bartender told me hes shocked, but several people say they are not surprised including a man named brian. The crowd at molotovs is not a tech oriented crowd for the most part. Its probably one of the more punk rock bars in the city. So this its not really google glass country. Reporter youre not saying she should be victimized like that. Of course not. No one should be, but a level of tact in that type of establishment might have behooved her. The crowd was jeering as they do with any last call crowd outside the bar and city of running around very excited and people and she was running around very excited and people were telling her youre being a [ bleep ]. Take those glasses off. Reporter he saw the aftermath as the confrontation spilled out onto the sidewalk. I think that everybody was upset she would be recording outside of a bar this late with obviously embarrassing behavior going on around her and just rather insulted that someone thinks its okay to record them the entire time theyre in public. Reporter sarah said she never got her purse or phone back but that she did reach back to that guy and grab her google glass back and that she has video of the person who attacked her. So she says she reported that to police. Is there something with this google glass . Google has been warning people that this sort of thing could happen . Reporter theyve anticipated problems like this . They actually sent out a list of dos and donts. Nashville made a video about it, took it a step further. I like the show, but i like the book the game of thrones a lot better. Actually game of thrones is just a first book published in 1996. Reporter a lot of fact pours at play here, a bar at closing time. Theres contention with factors at play here, a bar at closing time, theres some tension with the Tech Community and recording people when they dont want to be recorded. Sounds like all those sort of tensions boiled over. New details about that mass murderer at a Northern California indian reservation. Court documents say a county undersheriff saw the suspect, this woman, sherry rhodes, stabbing someone in a parking lot. Rhodes is charged with four counts of murder, two counts of attempted murder. She was under investigation for allegedly embezzling 50,000 from the Cedarville Rancheria in alturis. She opened fire on the Tribal Council last thursday, then grabbed a knife when she ran out of bullets. A 19yearold student at Uc Santa Barbara said she was gang raped this weekend. The Sheriffs Office says its unclear if the attack was on campus or nearby. They have few clues to go on, no suspects and no known witnesses. The student is out of the hospital and home with her family tonight. Tonight weve learned there will be a big public push tomorrow to send more rapists to prison. Andria borba says crucial evidence is collecting dust all over california because of budget cuts. This evidence is rape kits taken right after an assault, but because theres no state money the victims want you to help. Its just kind of a failure of justice. Reporter natasha is on a one woman crusade to get every backlogged rape kit in the United States tested. For her its a personal story. She was raped and robbed in 1993. My kit sat 9 1 2 years just collecting dulles in Police Custody in new york city. Reporter hers was one of 17,000 that hasnt seen the inside of a crime lab. In the bay area the numbers arent that bad, but theyre not good in. San francisco there are 800 untested kits. In Alameda County 1,900. Natasha is partnering with the Alameda CountyDistrict Attorneys Office to raise private money to get all of their kits tested. Each rape kit represents a human being whose body was essentially a crime scene. Reporter the push to get rape kits tested in a timely manner doesnt end there. Assembly member nancy skin are of berkeley introduced ab1517 to create a Sexual Assault victims dna bill of rights which would force Law Enforcement in california to book all rape kits within five days and get them to a lab within 30. We cant actually find the perpetrator and also we cant connect the crime to other crimes. So basically people that commit Sexual Assault are out there without our being able to connect that because were not putting the evidence into a database. Reporter nash tasha hopes these efforts natasha hopes these efforts will help rape victims everywhere from having their wounds reopened years later. Andria borba, kpix5. Today lawmakers in sacramento doing a big about face on the glove law. Everything is sanitized from what im holding here to what im holding here. Reporter alameda bartender Katy Anderson says she was insulted when she heard about the bill that would require chefs and bartenders to wear latex gloves while handling food including the olive she just put on this drink. Its one of the oldest professions and it hasnt been a problem thus far. So i dont really see why its a problem now. Reporter shes not the only one who feels that way. Luckily he wasnt badly hurt, was able to land the plane with a few cuts. This may seem like a touchy or either ridiculous question, but who should asian women marry if they want smart and successful kids . Betty yu finds out one answer is quickly becoming the talk of the bay area. Reporter if you go there, youre going to be stereotyping. It makes some people nervous, but amy shaw makes a living talking about touchy subjects. The selfproclaimed tiger mom who set off a firestorm about her extreme parenting in 2011 is back. In a new book the triple package the author and her husband Jed Rubenfeld have more to say about why certain groups in america are more successful than others. Our whole book is written to show thats whats propelling success today in these groups and in plenty of individuals are three qualities open to anyone. Reporter the authors both yale law professors, name chinese, jews, indians and nigerians to americas list of overachieving groups. Their children get better test scores, have better jobs and make more money. The authors identified three shared traits. They feel superior and insecure at the same time, that feeling that what theyre doing isnt good enough and they have impulse control or discipline. What do nigerian americans have in common with mormons or jews . It turns out when groups are on the rise, really doing disproportionately well sending their kids to the best schools, they all tend to impose much more strict discipline on their children at an early age. Reporter but that success isnt permanent. After three generations they perform no better than the rest of the population. I think its a simplistic argument. Reporter two usc socialologists argue on an individual level the triple package makes sense, but not everyone can climb the ladder of success even if they have the three traits. They ignore the social and the historical and legal context of immigration. Theyve ignored the fact that not everybody starts at the same starting line when they enter the United States. We came from nothing. There was no educational system. It was just simply become part of progress from that. Reporter other critics called the book racist. I find it just incomprehensible. Our book shows exactly the opposite, that its nothing biological. Reporter they say perseverance and motivation can be taught. On the uc Berkeley Campus some students have learned that lesson. I sometimes do feel the need that i need to kind of like do well because like when we visit place s like where im from like in india and stuff, you see a lot of people who arent successful and you want to better yourself. I do find that those groups you named off have stricter parenting skills or the parents have stricter skills. So theyre more adamant about their children doing well and then the children end up getting that imprinted in their brain. Reporter the one word used a lot in this story was success. Success really means Different Things to different people, though, right . Thats right. Reporter success is always difficult to define. The authors say for the purposes of this book they only looked at money, education and corporate status because those things are easy to measure. Definitely one to be discussed. Thank you.
