fire season. this is the kind of fire we don't want to see this early in the year the billowing smoke and dancing flames the first signs something was wrong. eric rub owe and his mother lived nearby. they got worried, and so did their neighbors. >> we came as soon as we could to come see the smoke. we were scared. >> i just saw the smoke coming out of, like, the back. i was like, whoa. >> fire crew ace tack it had grass fire that broke out tonight south of east ridge mall. firefighters say they did not order any evacuation, but they tackled the flames hard and fast to prevent them from spreading the homes to the best and south. >> we wanted to make sure we made an aggressive attack on the structure and get it knocked down pretty quick before when it's dry like this and the wind is not blowing very hard, that -- that gives us an indication that it could change direction at any time. >> because fire awareness week does not start in san jose till monday, wild land patrols staples the fire season were not available so crews hit the fire with an army of up to 70 firefighters, including cal fire. helicopters even scooped water from the lake near raging waters. today's fire makes some neighbors uneasy about the early start to fire season. >> pretty scary, yeah, because we have different communities around, you know. >> no homes burned. two people suffered spr noek inhalation but did not go to the hospital. as for the cause, investigators say they will be back here tomorrow some time in the daylight. . two southern california right now and a live look at that massive wild fire in ventura county. the burn area now covering 43 square miles. that's a live picture. that is nearly the size of san francisco. 28,000 acre springs fire has nearly tripled in size since this morning and with the wind blowing it all over the place, tonight it is just 20% contained. the fire threatening thousands of homes in the hidden valley area, and that is where theresa garcia is stationed tonight. theresa. >> ken, good evening. you know, up until sunset, there were helicopters dipping into this lake here behind me. they were basically gathering up water to make drops over all of those flare ups. the fire officials tell me they had to order about a dozen residents and a dozen or so homes to evacuate in this hidden valley area. really, day two of this springs fire has really been a tough one. they've had to, as you were saying earlier, triple in size. the latest figures have it at 28 thousand acres with 20% contained. when the try, hot sant an winds finally shifted on shore the weather cooled some but the flames turned around and headed inland towards more of the populated area. many residents gathered up their animals, including horses, and evacuated to safer zones. tomorrow there's an air tanker arriving. that's going to be a huge boost to all the aircraft making watt and her fire retardant drops. they've been trying to protect these homes from burning. about 15 homes have been damaged but none te stroied. it has certainly been a long day, but there is a change in thewet and her a good chance that there will be some rain by sunday. that should give the firefighters a good shot at getting an upper hand. all together the fire officials out here are telling me they're looking ahead at a toufr season throughout the state already. firefighter haves respond today more than 680 wild fires since the beginning of the year. that's a third more than average. ken, back to you. >> amazing. yeah, because we're only, you know, may right now. we still have really the bulk of the fire season still ahead of us. theresa garcia reporting live from southern california. thank you very much. paul says we are not out of the woods just yet. >> absolutely not. the tire danger is going to stay high for the next several movants. that is a given. that's the new baseline. high fire danger. all it takes is something extra weather wise to get us from high fire danger to extreme. dry weather conditions tonight and tomorrow. now, the wind is going to pick up especially in the north bay. that's where we have a red flag warning, goes into effect in about 45 minutes and last all the way through tomorrow afternoon. relative humidity is down. the winds will be up and everything is tender dry so problems, once again, in the north bay with a fire weather alert, a red flag warning. wait till you see the change in our forecast around here. it is going to get chilly and perhaps wet. details on when coming up. the warriors and the sharks is in the playoffs, and it's baseball season. great game tonight but ready to play a little football? going to be the reason why the on shore flow comes back on sunday with highs in the low to mid 70s. this is the reason why we'll stay chilly for much of next week, cloudier for much of next week with even the chance of showers or isolated thunderstorm coming up on monday. things not moving the direction they normally do, but the forecast changing. we're going to get cooler and cloudier. tomorrow a great day for you to get outside. not going to be hot, not going to be cold. it will be cooler though and cloudier coming up on sunday with a few showers possible late monday and the chance of a
