Im ken bastida. And im elizabeth cook. The brushfire in Riverside County started just after 4 00 this afternoon and its still going strong tonight. Youre looking at live pictures. Its only 20 contained. Flames burned up to 150 acres of rancho rupa Regional Park west of riverside. The fire spread from 10 acres to 50 in just an hour, consuming palm trees and threatening homes and buildings. Right now, voluntary evacuations are in effect. Firefighters hope they can get the upper hand before gusty offshore winds start fanning the flames. So far, the winds are holding steady. Residents worked to help their neighbors before fire crews arrived. I had to help put it out. Hes working from the bottom. Im working from the top. An it was just team work. Its horrible. Scary. People trying to knock on peoples doors, trying to let people know whats going on. The embers are falling on the roof and everybody kind of pulls together and grabs hoses. Authorities believe the fire may have been sparked by downed power lines. Were learning more about the man who killed two Santa Cruz Police detectives in cold blood. Kpix 5s kiet do found out the death toll could easily have been much higher. Kiet . Reporter ken, everyone we talked to within the crime scene, seems like they all had some story of survival. Thats because the gunman had two weapons and was spraying bullets everywhere. Were also learning that the two officers murders happened so quickly that they barely had time to turn and run. Youre looking at a 45 caliber bullet fired by the suspect from his own gun. He pulled the trigger at his home. It sailed over a playground, a busy street, and hit a woman standing on stanford avenue a fifth of a mile away. She was standing in the street by the speed bump. Reporter right in front of melissas home. The bullet missed her child, who was in her arms. The child said, my mommy was hit by a bullet and i looked at her and said, what . And when she showed it to me, i thought, oh, my god, my son just came over and got hit by a bullet in my neighborhood. I was horrified. Reporter all around the crime scene, stories are emerging of close calls, like this fire truck that was used as a bullet shield and mike, who says the guns bullet missed him by two feet. It was pop, pop pop pop pop. And then the cops guns went off. Thats when it got real loud. Reporter we also now know detective Sergeant Loran baker and Elizabeth Butler had been at the property for ten minutes before knocking on the suspects door. Jeremy goulet talked with the officers for less than ten minutes, went back inside to get his gun, came out this door and started shooting. Neither officer was wearing body armor at the time of the incident. However, body armor would not have helped. Reporter half an hour later, goulet was gunned down. Hed taken officer goulets body armor and both weapons. Goulet was a former military Police Officer and Army Helicopter pilot who had been courtmartialed for rape of female officers in hawaii. The charges were dropped. He secretly recorded women on video in san diego, portland and berkeley. The fallen officers were investigating an accusation that goulet broke into a coworkers house and tried to sexually assault her. The entire Santa Cruz Police department has been given the day off today and yesterday to mourn. Theyll be back on duty tomorrow. The funerals are set for next thursday at 11 a. Christin ayers tells us the weeklong manhunt came to an opportunity in an apartment in the san fernando valley. Reporter one week after a deadly shooting and fiery crash on the las vegas strip, police say they got their man. The man seen flashing a fist full of 100 bills in this youtube video. A team of federal agents arrested 26yearold harris here at this hollywood apartment complex. There were tips that proved to be beneficial. We used those. Reporter the neighbor was surprised to seem fbi agents and officers enter her building. I thought that they were just shooting an unpermitted indy film or something. Reporter the arrest came on the day that one of harriss alleged victims, aspiring rapper kenny cherry, was laid to rest. Harris and cherry had argued at the hotel resort. Investigators say the shooting that followed caused a Chain Reaction crash on the strip that killed two others. I cant imagine anything much more serious than firing a weapon from a moving vehicle into another moving vehicle on a corner such as las vegas boulevard and flamingo. Reporter harris is charged with three counts of murder and several counts of attempted murder. But Authorities Say more charges could be added as the investigation develops. The fbi says harris surrendered peacefully. Las vegas investigators believe harris had been communicating with people he knew in california by phone before actually fleeing here. Christin, do we have any information on how authorities tracked harris down in the first place . We do know that the fbi team was the same team that finally busted whitey bullger back in 2005, so obviously these guys are professionals and had staked out the apartment for quite some time. Last week we told you about a woman raped on the uc santa cruz campus. Now police are telling us it was all a hoax. A 21yearold woman claimed shed been attacked and beatened. The police chief says she is admitting now that she made it all up. We spent a lot of effort and time, understandably so, in this investigation. We instituted extra patrols as well as safety escort service. The District Attorneys Office will now have to decide if that woman will be charged. Remember when president obama said his feelings on gay marriage were evolving . Well, that was more than two years ago. Today, the president s evolution is complete. Kpix 5s David Jackson reports the Obama Administration filed papers today urging the Supreme Court to strike down prop 8. Reporter the issue is really about momentum. Californias proposition 8 banned gay marriage in 2008. Five years ago, but it feels more like 50, simply because attitudes have changed so fast. Todays effort by the white house to urge the Supreme Court to strike down prop 8 marks a new position to president obama. His opposition to gay marriage has officially melted away, and many republicans are softening too. Its very obviously at this point hes not running for reelection anymore and morally he believes in Marriage Equality, that its likely to be the future in this country, and we may as well embrace it now. Reporter california has already granted gay couples civil unions. As the u. S. Supreme court also is the Supreme Court also being swept up in the momentum to grant gay Marriage Equality . I think the court is willing to look at this issue differently. Certainly on the question about whether it matters whether youre born gay or choose to be gay, thats a ridiculous argument in 2013. Reporter californias gay and Lesbian Community is pleased by the new obama position but still intent on obtaining full gay Marriage Equality in every state. And much of the public agrees. I think its actually a good thing. And i think that people should not be restricted from whom they want to marry.
