Mccain is bracing for a tough election in the general. Polls have showed him with a Comfortable Lead for todays primary. Were very comfortable about forward to moving for the election in november. This group of young people has certainly inspired us. Mccain expects to face democratic congressman Ann Kirkpatrick in the fall. Before the general election mccain faces a challenge from kelly ward. Check out doug ducey, entering a polling station. The republican, like a lot of people didnt have to wait in any lines to vote today. Very thankful that we did not have the same problems that we ask during the president ial primary election that we had in march at the polls. We have received a few complaints. But for the most part, things were going pretty smoothly. Reporter lets go to one of the infamously jammed up polling places down the street from us. Reporter you guys might recall in march so many people the case. No long lines to speak of. We want to show you the video of those long lines on march 22 for the president ial preference election. For starters there were only 60 polling places in Maricopa County contributing this to problem. You will remember, it took some people six hours to vote. This time around though, there are many more. 724 polling places. The county reporters office tells us, for primary, and ge required by law to have a polling place per precinct, and voters say this has been going smoothly. Its been great. Having had any problems. There was a couple people standing in line, but not like the earlier vote. That was just crazy out the door. Today was a lot easier. Reporter they also have who have undergone training and equipment. We talked to the county recorders office, they say will was a minor problem. About 6 polling locations didnt open on time. They say the latest a polling place opened was 6 30. Also, we should mention, the county recorder race running against republican challenger aaron flannery. Thank you. Four running to replace outgoing congressman matt salmon. This may be the most hotly contested race on todays primary ballot. Derrick sell joins us with a look at Congressional District 5. Its right the at corner of baseline, and stapley drive. Stapley drive is named after don stapleys family, who is also running in this race. Perhaps jobess biggest challenger is state senator andy bigs. Hes gotten nearly all of the big name endorsements. Hes also gotten the most Campaign Contributions in this race. 10 times more than jones. Thats where things get interesting. Jones has actually spent the most. More than all of her opponents combined because 98 of her Campaign War Chest is coming from herself. I asked her about that a short time ago. Weve taken donations from people who have been willing to give. I have not made it an overt attempt to collect money. I have not sent out a single fund raising email, because i people to office who are not beholden to anyone, and donations naturally make you beholden. Confesses to police in nevada after a drug overdose. 62yearold Richard Polaski was released from the hospital today. He is sitting in a jail cell tonight. While he was at the hospital, he told police where he buried his friend, 65yearold john holland. Investigators found the body in concrete and dirt. Polaski is now facing premeditated first degree murder charges. The search continues outside of his phoenix home. A driver pulled up and started shooting. He was hit in the arm, but will be okay. Police are looking for a tan suv connected to this case. A tow truck driver hailed a hero tonight after chasing down a hit and run driver. The tow truck driver followed him until police could take him into custody. No word on the womans still to come, a home burglary caught on camera. Reporter the canary camera system uploaded it to the crowd, shortly before the burglars found them, turned them off, and stole them. In the video, you can hear one call the other michael. A cbs 5 viewer contacted me, hines, and she knew him and his family well. We forwarded that information to police, and just yesterday, Police Arrested hines. Just before noon today, hines was released without bail. I appeared at the initial hering this morning at 2 00 a. M. , and made what i felt to be good arguments, but he was still released with no bond. Just to let him back out to me doesnt make any sense. Reporter hines has been charged with Second Degree and is scheduled to appear before a judge twice in september. In the meantime, hines has been ordered to wear an ankle monitor. Its hard to understand why he would just be released back into the population. Especially, given the whereabouts of the items are still unknown. Reporter police are still searching for the other person seen in this Surveillance Video. Its now believed a third person may have also been involved. Tonight, a criminal investigation into an officer invoe in kingman. Its pretty early in this investigation, but police think an officer checked on a car stopped in a roadway. Thats when a 35yearold woman pulled out a gun, and apparently pointed it at that officer. He fired several shots, killing the woman. Shes been identified as paula phillips. That officer on leave as this investigation continues. Are you going to be the person that actually goes out and does something about it, or do nothing about it. The San FranciscoPolice Officer association has often quarterback Colin Kaepernick a chance to experience their training. Kaepernick refused to stand during the National Anthem at a football game. He he says its a chance to shine a spotlight on African Americans or their treatment here in our country. The Officers Association also sent a letter to the nfl, asking for an take a look at this microburst, it was caught on camera in ohio. Incredible to watch. Pretty dry conditions in parts of downtown phoenix, up around the north valley, and out west towards buckeye, and goodyear. But lets zoom in on all of that activity. A lot of the showers and thunderstorms starting to fizzle out as the afternoon hours progress. You can still see isolated thunderstorms out there in mesa, and still some light rainfall. We did have some stronger rainfall totals just to the east of scottsdale, but still seeing light rain now coming down along the 101. So keep that in mind. A live look. This is m you can see the dark ominous clouds in the distance. Temperatures here, in scottsdale dropping. But here still pretty warm. Theres that line of showers and storms pushing down toward the south and east. Conditions starting to improve out there in the east valley. Clear skies. Some activity out towards areas of new mexico with the daytime heating. Another chance of showers and storms at around 4 00. Thats going to continue on through the evening hours, and well see that chance extend through thursday, and drier conditions over the weekend. It looks like it that temperature dropping. The jury is still out on those ecigarettes and what impact they may have on your health. Now there is another serious problem. Were talking about e cigarettes that explode. Cbs 5s jason berry explains. Valley teenager who knows she was downright lucky, after her ecigarette device exploded. She was hanging out with friends, taking a couple of puffs on her ecigarette when all of a sudden the device exploded. Within seconds, the teens clothes and hair were on fire, and haley was screaming in pain. Haley suffered second and third degree burns on her chest, i started feeling this weird burning. All in my side, i cant even explain the feeling. It was hurting. Reporter it turns out haley is not the only one to be badly burned from an e cigarette. More than a dozen patients have been treated at the burn center when their ecigarette got too hot or exploded. Them in a pocket or purse and they overheated and exploded. Now were starting to see people who get injured when theyre actually using them. Thats a little more problematic, because were seeing more hand burns, and face burns. Reporter many believe its the small battery thats to blame. The fda is working on new regulations for ecigarettes that would include new standards for manufacturers and battery safety. The teen we spoke to says she has no problem with other people using ecigarettes vaping, but after her frightening ordeal, shes decided to quit. In phoenix, jason berry, cbs 5 news. East valley, mesa, scottsdale, and looked pretty intense as the valley, a lot of these showers and thunderstorms starting to fizzle out. Just along parts of mesa, around the 101, seeing showers. Our camera is aimed, looking east of us towards the arcadia area, you can still see some of the light rainfall, and the dark clouds in the distance.
