And indeed you are listening to 94 point one f.m. K p.f.a. And 89.3 k. P.f.b. In Berkeley 88 point one if c.f. In Fresno and 97.5 k 248 b. Are in Santa Cruz and on line at k.p. If a or it is 2 o'clock Stay tuned for points of departure. But . And. The for. The for. The for. The for. The for. For. Globally. See. Unbelievable the loneliest monk Brilliant Corners. Remarkable record remarkable artist and in fact you are listening to point of departure I am Kevin Kerr rate sitting in for horse Mansfield Jr pleasure to be with you the time is $220.00 in the afternoon is a peaceful day outside I'm certainly hoping that you're enjoying it I just wanted to. Just present a little bit of Monk this afternoon we thought it was appropriate here a cape if a given that Monk will be in that sense celebrating our 100th birthday and I understand there's going to be a great deal of celebrations around the country if not the planet just honoring and remembering his deep profound contribution Tim proposition of music site died it might be nice just to say go on with Monk this afternoon and share some recordings particularly in the area or in the years covering 19541957 why those particular years I think it's really it is shows just an artist sort of transitioning into the next phase of their artistry he had been in essence kind of you know definitely producing really wonder for regional work but it certainly wasn't quite. Sort of getting out to the masses and but he was highly respected among his peers other musicians and they recognize his his brilliance his ability to compose and chop it up on piano and also just put I mean as you just heard him Brilliant Corners I mean just put the other musicians through a great deal of text each and NASA examine it's no joke and. And you just play with amazing musicians and the results speak for themselves so what you just heard was of course Brilliant Corners it was on Riverside records cannot Man 956 and on that particular recording it featured. And of course Tony is Monk and Sonny Rollins Ernie Henry and alto sax and Oscar pedophile and bass as well as Max Roach or neurons in a very very distinctive. Raising of levels between you know Sonny Rollins and Max Roach on that one are part of that you heard well unique and and that was featured on Monk's music which also came out in Riverside a year later in the personnel and that was of course monk and can-O. Ray Copeland on trumpet Grice or I'll tell sax Coleman Hawkins So this is this is this particular record is like one that I'm fond of because somehow someway because . I think Monk had built so much incredible equity amongst musicians he could have Coleman Hawkins and John Coltrane on the same record and he managed to do that with most music it was wonderful so of course I just mentioned he had John Coltrane on tenor sax also had Coleman Hawkins and tenor Willie where on bass and of course Blakey on drums that he opened up with Abide With Me which is a really really short piece but it's almost kind of like a declaration of calling forth that was written by William monk it had the same personnel on that one so again really really pleasure to be on and to share and some monk as well I might want to have an opportunity to read from the wonderful biography of monk that was written by Robin Beattie Cowley came out I think around 2006 inches has a great deal of insight about monkey you know I've noticed just in my own research just a lot of misconceptions about my as you know a figure a personality. And you can almost you can almost try to figure out a story if you just get an opportunity to look at all of the out there only as Monk album covers and it's always trying to create some some image of some mysterious wild man or like someone who is a little off center but that this particular biographer. Really explains I think at the heart of it. Just how valuable musician relationships are and how they're able to make meaning as result of coming to full war and I just think it's really wonderful piece so I think I might feature some Spasso ages as we pay tribute to the loneliest month this afternoon on Point of Departure So next up I really want to trash dig into some more older monk again featuring some recordings from the period of 1954 to 57 in this particular piece for and why and again you'll notice the tendency where just the rhythm patterns are just just you have to know how to play in order dog in order to hang with this so I want to share this with you and they will just keep building out as we go on again listening to point of departure I have Kevin Cartwright and this is the loneliest Mark. 'd I'm pretty certain that an expert here I'm not claiming to be one but I'm pretty sure someone in this band played a soul last and they made it sound masterful It's wonderful piece written for his odd longtime friend Nneka No Nick is from that I want to feel album brain Brilliant Corners of Riverside records out in 1056. Same person knows the other piece that we played earlier Sonny Rollins and tenor Sonny Rollins in 1056 by the way just massive massive massive player. Ernie Henry again on alto sax Oscar Pettiford on bass and again Max Roach on drums and before that we heard forward and one which is from the genius of modern music volume 2 LP came out cash it was early in the early fifty's I'm guessing like 950 and it was on Blue Note at the time I think. But again made it apparent in 1956. And that 1 May have been prestige probably getting those confused but nevertheless so wonderful piece featuring Monk on piano Art Blakey on drums Sahiba Shihab on alto sax Jackson on vibraphone and Al McKibben on bass you are listening to point of departure I am guest hosting today for the great horse Mansfield Jr I'm Kevin Curtis right pleasure to be here I really can't think of too many ways to really enjoy and celebrate a Saturday. I would say listening to Monk and listening to these particular monk pieces is probably the best way to go and I'm certainly hoping that you. Are enjoying it as well we certainly want to thank you for all that you did for us and our last fun driver we know you were asking a lot of folks but you know we do really appreciate the support and you can always you know go online at k.p. a Fadeout or g. And take a look and see if anything like your fancy but. You know we really appreciate it and I think we need to say more than we do but thank you again today again as I mentioned earlier where we're featuring Felonious Monk his work his brilliance I'm We could probably do easily like 18 hour program about it because it's so extensive 2 hours is you know no way does it just is but we're going to do the best we can here today. Just to light again let him speak in let you feel what you feel about his music but I can tell you. I started doing my thing on his mum chasten February 1988 and I remember that because I went out and bought months music and just. Flipped out because it was just a lot of it of course was his original material but it's like his original material . Reinterpret it and you just had these incredible players on it and you had this. Disparate and liveliness to it this personality this dexterity. That you could feel that any number of cultural moments were occurring in this music and to me just really stands out as a fabulous album of that period of creativity that of course and Brilliant Corners but I again as I said we're going to cover the map between 5457 the loneliest monk . And just try to try to share this this wonderful music so I think belief I think we're going to probably go into a little bit early. Monk and one that is featuring him any trio this one you might recall this piece because it was later. Played at his Famous 5 Spot. Performances with John Coltrane this one is called Trinkle Tinkle. Or are. 4 or. More are. Poor. Poor. Poor. Poor. Poor. You're. Poor. Poor. Poor. Poor. Poor. Earth the Earth. The. Earth. The. Earth. For. Those. Who. Do. Sitting in. I'm sitting in for horse Mansfield Jr I'm also right now I'm joined by Dr Felicia Bridges who is handling the keyboards this afternoon so we're going to do is continue as we. You know celebrate mom and I kind of curating share some of the music and Dan it would be great to have write 8 hours of this and certainly hoping that we have some time you know during the next time we fundraise that we can perhaps to do a month special as you know the months approach his birthday which is a. Trigger $10917.00 and I know that there's going to be celebrations and musical collaboration around the Bay Area. I'm just pointing out the fact of his brilliance. So we're going to definitely dig deeper and some more monk and feature something that you might be familiar with and some other things that you may not be familiar with but I am very pleased that you all here and and join us with us you are in fact listening to 94 point one f.m. K.p. a Faith in it a 9.3 can't have been perfectly 88 point one k f c f in Fresno and 97.5 k 248 b r And Santa Cruz.
