Cody in jail and well and I'm confident that they have already begun to use this experience as a life lesson they're going to have to regain the trust of this athletic department of this university and because this was such a high profile international matter the trust of the general public trust is earned it isn't just given these 3 young men were main suspended indefinitely from our program as we work through the review process with the University's Office of Student Conduct during that indefinite suspension they will not travel with the team nor will they shoot up for home games at some point they may be permitted to join team workouts practices and meetings but that timeline has yet to be determined they will have to earn their way back they will cooperate fully with the university review of this matter and will use this time to focus on their academics my expectation is of their work hard to demonstrate why they deserve to be a part of this program. I'd also like to express my gratitude to the other young men in our program who represented u.c.l.a. The right way during our trip and were able to put aside the distractions of travel . I recognize there are many questions yet to be answered about what transpired in China over the last 9 days and I appreciate the media and the job that you have to do my statement today will provide some answers to those questions are not likely all of them while students having just returned last night were to continue to review certain aspects of the matter some fans alumni and members of the media have wondered why we remain silent during this situation essentially as you might imagine it was indicated by the sensitive nature of trying to bring our students home safely demanded that we stay silent. Let me start by saying that prior to leaving the United States and again while in China coach offered met with the team in reminded them all of the expectations of the responsibilities that go along with representing u.c.l.a. He in a staff did this is a means proactively to try to prevent a negative situation of any kind. On Monday November 6th the 1st full day of the trip the group had a phenomenal experience visiting the Alibaba campus where the team had an opportunity to tour the campus and to hear from Josiah the co-founder and executive vice chairman of the Ali Baba group. Later that evening the students were given 90 minutes of free time if you will to explore the town of Congo or simply to relax. Gello jail any code to use that time to visit several stores origination to the hotel it was at that time that they took the items from 3 of those stores without paying for them. They then return to the team hotel with those items the following morning November 7th the police arrived at the team hotel and began to interview several members of the Georgia Tech team and the u.c.l.a. Basketball team as they attempted to identify which students were involved in the thefts in addition to interviewing several students Police also searched bags both in the hotel and on the team bus within a few hours they identified jello Jaylen in Cody as the likely suspects and escorted them to a local police station so he had coached a way to start packed what was so sick commissioner glory of ours were able to go with him and Steve Alford an associate athletic director Chris Carlson followed shortly thereafter. I was notified by the rest of our u.c.l.a. Personnel on the ground while I was mid flight to Shanghai the chancellor of the u.c.i. Office of Legal Affairs and other appropriate University of personnel and you see administrators were quickly brought into the loop which began work on security both legal counsel and information which at that time of course was rather sparse. Following the rash of the students remain in custody undergoing questioning by police before being released on bail early in the morning of November 8th the total bail amount was approximately $2200.00 u.s. Dollars as part of the conditions of the release the students had to surrender their passports and agree to travel restrictions they were not required to remain in the hotel though we made that decision out of abundance of caution a respect for the process Bell in question has since been responded by the Chinese authorities. The u.c.l.a. Office of Legal Affairs in concert with 12 Conference and legal experts in China work to identify a local outside counsel and honcho to represent 3 student athletes the university then requested and subsequently received authorization from the parents of the students to engage legal represent. Patient on their behalf. Regarding the issue of the expenses that were incurred over the last 9 days u.c.l.a. Provided the necessary resources to secure the timely release and safe return of the student athletes we now have the task of working to reconcile who is ultimately responsible for the costs incurred in addition to addressing any n.c.a.a. Implications. When the rest of the team departed for Shanghai to continue their trip in preparation for the game against Georgia Tech Chris Carlson and guardian of ours stayed behind and hung Joe with the 3 students. Over the ensuing days our staff and students fully cooperated with the local authorities who were gracious throughout the entire matter in an attempt obviously to resolve the situation I made a visit to the hotel on Friday to check on everyone and to reassure the students that many people working on their behalf and doing everything possible to try to get them home from those meetings I was confident the students were safe and being treated with the highest level of respect. On Saturday when the rest of the team of the traveling party returned home to u.c.l.a. Administrators staff members Sociedad director Chris Carlson and Doug Erickson remained in China with the student athletes we left with the belief that substantial progress was being made to achieve a satisfactory outcome. To that end on Tuesday in Shanghai the local authorities confirmed that the student athletes could leave the country they did so at 9 pm Shanghai time 5 pm Pacific time on Tuesday and of course arrived last night at l.a.x. Around 5 pm. When the charges against the students were ultimately withdrawn while the charged with the students were ultimately withdrawn Jaylen codenames yellow of course did admit to breaking the law as Steve noted the 3 student athletes have been suspended indefinitely from the men's basketball program as we continue to review the matter in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct as we do with all cases related to misconduct for students and we will work together prudently come to some resolution on this matter in short order. I know there are still questions to be answered is my hope that in the coming weeks as we learn more we'll be able to share additional information. I'm confident the resiliency of the community and the family and we will. Thank you . To do damage repair for the damage damage done by the 3 players Well I think these incidences Unfortunately they happen you know all around us you know at universities at businesses in Hollywood every day and I think that you know there is a form of recovery marketing I actually did some research on that years and years ago and you know the university is now actually has an obligation to its stakeholders to say this is not who we are in these are the steps we're going to take in the future. To make good on our commitment that this kind of thing doesn't happen again . And you you never can prevent something from happening and these things happen kind of all the time because we're human and that's not to be light on the issue it's just that they do happen and so the university I think made a number of statements that were pretty revealing about their intentions going forward and. What what were those statements what what what did you hear or were revealing and what they said well it sounded like Steve offered commented on the fact that these players are suspended in some form from both practicing and playing on the team hopefully not hopefully but my understanding is I heard that right and I think for a student athlete that's a signal. That universities do these kinds of foreign tours as brand building exercises opportunities to do something that looks great for recruits but also raises the profile the university abroad and instead they happen to run into the biggest public relations nightmare from a bunch of different angles that you could possibly imagine alternately to back up what Professor Burton said this seems like an appropriate kind of punishment I would also just point out that the university has on the coach has a lot of wiggle room about how long an indefinite suspension turns out to be is this going to be the whole season is it going to be 5 games as he can make a run stadium steps and then say their good will had to say well if he brings them back before the end of the current season it would seem that the university would really be opening itself up to to heavy criticism you you see it is high risk The Bling Ring the players back this year well it's hard to say because are you punishing them for what unfortunately is you know not unheard of case of a freshman being freshman of shoplifting and breaking some laws or are you punishing them for causing a massive international incident clearly they blame bears some blame for both but also universities have a process for dealing with this stuff and of course it doesn't happen very quickly and so I notice that they use south mentioned that they would be allowing the Office of Student Conduct to make its judgment so clearly don't be something you know a significant heavy punishment and I don't know whether he'll be back before the end of the year and you know these are highly profile recruits but it's day don't seem like one and done players so we'll just have to see why and I wonder too about the what it says about the judgment of the players according to Dan growled the athletic director coach Alford had had told them about how closely you know they're going to be watched is as you know players from another country when they go to China that they're.
