Yesterday the president tweeted this morning about the release and asked whether the players would thank him for protecting them from a possible 10 year sentence as he put it and in fact we just heard from player Cody Riley he did thank President Trump and now we're just hearing from. This is Jade Jaylen Hill my Axis of earth on the most. Earth to me because I can see the panda. Opposites in my teammates Marcos' and my family because of how much negative attention put on them they do not deserve sorry for shoplifting what I did was stupid this is no other way to put it and I'm not that type of person. That this mistake would not define me as a person but is so messed up think an hour from it I don't want to be known for the star must say I want to be known for my respect and they saw my love and passion for the game of basketball is a vast army of r. They aren't they are just leaving the room where the news conference is being held at u.c.l.a. And we'll see who comes up next to talk whether it's going to be coach Steve Alford or someone else looks like Coach Alford is speaking next in the situation in China . And I want to thank everyone here 1st spec'ing that we cannot say much over the past week our priority throughout this entire situation is making sure that jello Jaylen and Cody got home safely and we were informed that anything that said during the process could have jeopardized the successful return to Los Angels we are grateful that they've safely returned home and have been able to reconnect with their family their friends and their teammates I can't think enough the incredible folks here. At the Pac 12 and even President Trump and isn't ministration for the nonstop efforts to resolve the situation to say that our young men are incredibly fortunate to have this kind of support system that around them is certainly an understatement from the u.c.l.a. Office of Legal Affairs to Chancellor block to Dan Guerrero from our senior staff in athletics Chris Carlson Doug Erickson during my entire staff and others on the ground with us in China this was truly been a team effort everyone focused on the best interest of our young men I specially want to recognize Chris for an unbelievable commitment for him to stay with our guys Gloria Navarro's from our Pac 12 Conference who was just simply incredible throughout everything as a coach you were young man for a long time and you get to know them very very well during the process. These are good young men. Who have exercised an inexcusable lapse lapse of judgment. And now they have to live with that they let a lot of people down in the process I'm extremely disappointed in their actions you just heard them apologize I would like to again apologize on their behalf so the chancellor to Dan to the Brewin family these young men are going to have to prove their words and actions that this isn't who they are and that they will not let their identity be defined by this incident I know Jell-O. Cody in jail and well and I'm confident that they have already begun to use this experience as a life lesson they're going to have to regain the trust of this athletic department of this university and because this was such a high profile international matter the trust of the general public trust is earned it isn't just given these 3 young men were main suspended indefinitely from our program as we work through the review process with the University's Office of Student Conduct during that indefinite suspension they will not travel with the team nor will they shoot up for home games at some point they may be permitted to join team workouts practices and meetings but that timeline has yet to be determined they will have to earn their way back they will cooperate fully with the university review of this matter and will use this time to focus on their academics my expectation is of their work hard to demonstrate why they deserve to be a part of this program. I'd also like to express my gratitude to the other young men in our program who represented u.c.l.a. The right way during our trip and were able to put aside the distractions of travel . Learning and enjoying a foreign country while also defeating a very good Georgia Tech basketball team the experience was memorable and the Chinese people were such a gracious host everywhere that we went as the head coach of our program it's my responsibility to move us forward and will do just that by focusing on basketball and the young man suiting up tonight against Central Arkansas thank you. Steve Alford u.c.l.a. Basketball coach and let's see who's going to speak next year with 3 words athletic director Dan derogative memorable trip for our entire team for our university there are responsible actions overshadow that opportunity. They've taken the 1st step here today as you've seen college i.z. For the hurt and pain that they're causing the community and accepting full responsibility for. My meeting with them and Hondo their expression of remorse regret sadness and embarrassment was a genuine is a Gets they know they made a huge mistake and as you can see they're deeply sorry for. The it's my hope that these 3 young men are not defined by this one instance but rather by their efforts to restore our trust in them their actions in China are contrary to our true blue and red and u.c.l.a. Athletics and quite frankly are unacceptable as a young man and City of knowledge there are so many people that u.c.l.a. Both in Westwood and in China as well as the packed well conference who are instrumental in getting us through this challenging time let me just express my gratitude to everyone involved. I also want to add my sincere thanks to chance or block for his resolute support throughout as well as technology the efforts of President Trump and his administration the White House Chief of Staff Gen Kelly who took the time to call our students. Over the weekend. I also want to express my sincere apology to Ali Baba and packed to a conference who are collaboratively to make this incredible cultural exchange possible the wonderful people of China Georgia Tech and I usually community for the disruption and the negative attention the students actions brought upon this extraordinary trip. I recognize there are many questions yet to be answered about what transpired in China over the last 9 days and I appreciate the media and the job that you have to do my statement today will provide some answers to those questions are not likely all of them while students having just returned last night were to continue to review certain aspects of the matter some fans alumni and members of the media have wondered why we remain silent during this situation essentially as you might imagine it was indicated by the sensitive nature of trying to bring our students home safely demanded that we stay silent. Let me start by saying that prior to leaving the United States and again while in China coach offered met with the team in reminded them all of the expectations of the responsibilities that go along with representing u.c.l.a. He in a staff did this is a means proactively to try to prevent a negative situation of any kind. On Monday November 6th the 1st full day of the trip the group had a phenomenal experience visiting the Alibaba campus where the team had an opportunity to tour the campus and to hear from Josiah the co-founder and executive vice chairman of the Ali Baba group. Later that evening the students were given 90 minutes of free time if you will to explore the town of Congo or simply to relax. Gello jail any code to use that time to visit several stores origination to the hotel it was at that time that they took the items from 3 of those stores without paying for them. They then return to the team hotel with those items the following morning November 7th the police arrived at the team hotel and began to interview several members of the Georgia Tech team and the u.c.l.a. Basketball team as they attempted to identify which students were involved in the thefts in addition to interviewing several students Police also searched bags both in the hotel and on the team bus within a few hours they identified jello Jaylen in Cody as the likely suspects and escorted them to a local police station so he had coached a way to start packed what was so sick commissioner glory of ours were able to go with him and Steve Alford an associate athletic director Chris Carlson followed shortly thereafter. I was notified by the rest of our u.c.l.a. Personnel on the ground while I was mid flight to Shanghai the chancellor of the u.c.i. Office of Legal Affairs and other appropriate University of personnel and you see administrators were quickly brought into the loop which began work on security both legal counsel and information which at that time of course was rather sparse. Following the rash of the students remain in custody undergoing questioning by police before being released on bail early in the morning of November 8th the total bail amount was approximately $2200.00 u.s. Dollars as part of the conditions of the release the students had to surrender their passports and agree to travel restrictions they were not required to remain in the hotel though we made that decision out of abundance of caution a respect for the process Bell in question has since been responded by the Chinese authorities. The u.c.l.a. Office of Legal Affairs in concert with 12 Conference and legal experts in China work to identify a local outside counsel and honcho to represent 3 student athletes the university then requested and subsequently received authorization from the parents of the students to engage legal represent. Patient on their behalf. Regarding the issue of the expenses that were incurred over the last 9 days u.c.l.a. Provided the necessary resources to secure the timely release and safe return of the student athletes we now have the task of working to reconcile who is ultimately responsible for the costs incurred in addition to addressing any n.c.a.a. Implications. When the rest of the team departed for Shanghai to continue their trip in preparation for the game against Georgia Tech Chris Carlson and guardian of ours stayed behind and hung Joe with the 3 students. Over the ensuing days our staff and students fully cooperated with the local authorities who were gracious throughout the entire matter in an attempt obviously to resolve the situation I made a visit to the hotel on Friday to check on everyone and to reassure the students that many people working on their behalf and doing everything possible to try to get them home from those meetings I was confident the students were safe and being treated with the highest level of respect. On Saturday when the rest of the team of the traveling party returned home to u.c.l.a. Administrators staff members Sociedad director Chris Carlson and Doug Erickson remained in China with the student athletes we left with the belief that substantial progress was being made to achieve a satisfactory outcome. To that end on Tuesday in Shanghai the local authorities confirmed that the student athletes could leave the country they did so at 9 pm Shanghai time 5 pm Pacific time on Tuesday and of course arrived last night at l.a.x. Around 5 pm. When the charges against the students were ultimately withdrawn while the charged with the students were ultimately withdrawn Jaylen codenames yellow of course did admit to breaking the law as Steve noted the 3 student athletes have been suspended indefinitely from the men's basketball program as we continue to review the matter in collaboration with the Office of Student Conduct as we do with all cases related to misconduct for students and we will work together prudently come to some resolution on this matter in short order. I know there are still questions to be answered is my hope that in the coming weeks as we learn more we'll be able to share additional information. I'm confident the resiliency of the community and the family and we will. Thank you . Dan Guerrero he and basketball coach Steve Alford are getting up bringing the news conference to a close is actually a series of statements by the 3 freshman basketball players who were arrested and detained in China the each of them making it admission of guilt that they had stolen the merchandise from the 3 different luxury goods stores adjacent to their hotel and then we heard from basketball coach Steve Alford saying it was an inexcusable lapse in judgment by the players they would be suspended indefinitely and that the disposition of of discipline would be going through the Office of Student Conduct to find a resolution as to what their status would be but it sounded as though they would be able to continue in school as coach offered said that they would be able to concentrate on their studies they would not be able to travel with the team they would not be able to play in home games nor would they be practicing with their u.c.l.a. Coming up a little bit later this hour what is it that you're surprisingly cheap about. A way in which you maybe pinch pennies that doesn't match your income Le Bron James said that he won't pay for music streaming he'll listen to the commercial service as annoying as that can be because he just won't spend the money and he's only making $31000000.00 this season with his Cleveland Cavaliers contract so my question for you is if not a deliberate on level what is it that you're particularly surprising leave your friends and family members penny pinching about that's later this hour right now we talk about the discipline just announced for the 3 u.c.l.a. Freshman basketball players who were arrested for shoplifting while the team was there to play Georgia Tech in China with us Rick Burton Syracuse University professor of sports management and faculty athletic representative to the n.c.a.a. For Syracuse professor Burton thank you for joining us good to be with you did you had a chance just hear those statements you. At least heard the 3rd player statement very similar to what the 2 teammates said the coach the athletic director your thoughts on how those statements were crafted Well I mean I'd like to believe that the student athletes are genuinely sorry for their actions and that you know it was less about scripting and more about you know the reality I think the athletic director spoke to that the the fact that these guys were you know filled with remorse as I imagine you would have been because you were probably would have been pretty afraid of were scared of you know being arrested in a foreign country and what do you think it's going to take for the university to. To do damage repair for the damage damage done by the 3 players Well I think these incidences Unfortunately they happen you know all around us you know at universities at businesses in Hollywood every day and I think that you know there is a form of recovery marketing I actually did some research on that years and years ago and you know the university is now actually has an obligation to its stakeholders to say this is not who we are in these are the steps we're going to take in the future. To make good on our commitment that this kind of thing doesn't happen again . And you you never can prevent something from happening and these things happen kind of all the time because we're human and that's not to be light on the issue it's just that they do happen and so the university I think made a number of statements that were pretty revealing about their intentions going forward and. What what were those statements what what what did you hear or were revealing and what they said well it sounded like Steve offered commented on the fact that these players are suspended in some form from both practicing and playing on the team hopefully not hopefully but my understanding is I heard that right and I think for a student athlete that's a signal. It can wait that they have to deal love to hear from you was an Air Talk listener what do you think of the indefinite suspension does that seem appropriate that the university would take additional time to determine when or if the 3 players who admitted shoplifting in China when or if they would return to the team 866893 k.p.c. Say 866-893-5722 or the talk page k.p.c. Si dot org You can also tweet at talk with us as well from the University of Georgia professor of journalism Welsh Suggs who was an associate director for the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics an independent group looking at reforms to strengthen the educational mission of college sports professor Suggs Welcome thank you very much what struck you most about what you heard in that news conference. Well I think as much as anything I just felt sympathy for u.c.l.a. That universities do these kinds of foreign tours as brand building exercises opportunities to do something that looks great for recruits but also raises the profile the university abroad and instead they happen to run into the biggest public relations nightmare from a bunch of different angles that you could possibly imagine alternately to back up what Professor Burton said this seems like an appropriate kind of punishment I would also just point out that the university has on the coach has a lot of wiggle room about how long an indefinite suspension turns out to be is this going to be the whole season is it going to be 5 games as he can make a run stadium steps and then say their good will had to say well if he brings them back before the end of the current season it would seem that the university would really be opening itself up to to heavy criticism you you see it is high risk The Bling Ring the players back this year well it's hard to say because are you punishing them for what unfortunately is you know not unheard of case of a freshman being freshman of shoplifting and breaking some laws or are you punishing them for causing a massive international incident clearly they blame bears some blame for both but also universities have a process for dealing with this stuff and of course it doesn't happen very quickly and so I notice that they use south mentioned that they would be allowing the Office of Student Conduct to make its judgment so clearly don't be something you know a significant heavy punishment and I don't know whether he'll be back before the end of the year and you know these are highly profile recruits but it's day don't seem like one and done players so we'll just have to see why and I wonder too about the what it says about the judgment of the players according to Dan growled the athletic director coach Alford had had told them about how closely you know they're going to be watched is as you know players from another country when they go to China that they're. Representing not just their school or their team but the u.s. Is where all of this was talked about and still they went into these high end stores where reportedly there was video of the thefts and and decided they were going to take these expensive items just seems like given the foolishness of that. You know u.c.l.a. Is a prestigious academic institution it's sort of the revelation of the stupidity of this is that also an issue. Well there's a lot going on with that but to break it down to a couple of pieces Yes clearly this is something really dumb and it is something is a colossal error of judgment I think all 3 of the players admitted that as well as the coaches and administrators and the question's going to be you know has this damage the u.c.l.a. Brand you know is their punishment going to reflect long term on what u.c.l.a. Is or is it something that people are going to forget about after the turn of the year and we'll have to see All right Rick in Long Beach your thoughts about the. Uncertain discipline for the students what would you like to have seen I would have liked to have seen them just kicked out of school I'm disheartened by the fact that we continue to lose to use phrases like. Poor choice or an unfortunate series of events be that 1819 year old kids they stole from high end stores they did it without a puny and they did it on the very 1st day or so this is not their 1st offense this is the 1st and they got caught I wish that the coach would have come out and said I appreciate that they're going to be working on their character and that they don't want to be defined by this that they're going to have to do better someplace else u.c.l.a. Well there's a lot of them I think and it's funny you asked that question because Coach Wooden I think used to start the season with teaching players how to put on their socks and tie their shoes and I don't know if you have to go back to some very basic things that we need to teach in all of our students and not just our student athletes but I think there are a lot of opportunities here to make clear to student athletes that the world is watching. And that when you're held to this higher standard when you're given this amazing opportunity you want to be really thoughtful about whether you want to throw that away gentlemen thank you very much I appreciate it Rick Burton professor of sports management at Syracuse University where he's also the faculty athletic rep to the n.c.a.a.
