I'm Marco Werman and this is the world thank you for being here on this Monday once again sadly Facebook's safety check has been activated this time in the cultural capital of Russia St Petersburg where earlier today an explosion threw the city's Metro into chaos. The blast was inside a subway car as a travel between 2 stations at least 10 people were killed many more were injured journalist Katherina Vinokourov a spoke with survivors at the station where the subway train stopped after the blast they said that they were educated very quickly that people inside. The they all were calling the relative saying that I'm alive I'm alive I'm alive Russian officials have said the explosion was caused by a bomb President Vladimir Putin said all possible causes are being investigated including terrorism earlier I spoke with reporter Anton McKeon in St Petersburg about what he saw today yes I have been preceded but I didn't see there were people injured by this blast but tie so many streets around these several stations and there are lots of high cost stuff from undersea services down to. A local present so I'm not how old the Metro the city is closed and there are almost almost no public transport full course all boxes and strengths about overcrowded because most people they used to use the metro and now it is impossible for them as it's close Yeah I mean it sounds very chaotic Could you just describe the area in St Petersburg where the explosion occurred so the blast happened but I'm saying that wasn't between Tonight was shit and technology just seems to do it it is in the center of the seat and get this that crossing the station is still there are many people there but to put you know clearly it was not a rush hour. It was 2 pm if you believe it was rush hour that weakens could be much more what's been the reaction overall in St Petersburg So 1st peoples are shocked and as far as information they call the charge and asked if it is a pair of them and they used Facebook or their facility of Facebook to check they're Ok and now all the people are thinking how to get to their homes because Sariel great problem almost especially for those who leave I'm not in the center of the city but some 5 districts Yeah Facebook safety check activated again a sign of the times what kind of difference is this for you as a resident of St Petersburg I mean Moscow seen attacks but what does this do to you and your sense of the city now it is the 1st terrorist attack and sent because it broke dealings all this period of time of collapse of something that you know. Is shocking for sure up and down motion in a reporter in St Petersburg thank you very much and thank you. Let's turn now to reporter Charles Maynes who is in Moscow What's been the reaction today in the capital Charles but of course shock and horror I mean this is something that Muscovites No well but Leningrad or St Petersburg is Russia's 2nd city and quite often there is high speed trains to travel between these 2 cities that just 4 hour intervals so either even quite a few people who for from St Petersburg to do business in Moscow during the day that return home to their own city so I think just generally it's been shock and horror at some of the carnage that they saw both in social media and of course on state media as well and when something like this happens does the Kremlin immediately send out a team from Moscow to St Petersburg to do the investigation out of that work well normally they would except this time of course Lattimer Putin was in St Petersburg he was at a forum that's a program in form in the morning he had meetings with the dollar Russian president later that day and then in a way it was interesting the way that he did not change his schedule whatsoever I mean there are video footage to surfaced on state media where he's grading Russian President Alexander Lukashenko smiling shaking hands on the other hand it's probably fair to say that Mr Putin said the right things express condolences to the friends and families of the victims he's also in touch with security services there looking into the blast and Mr Goulden said he was looking into all options including terrorism do investigators have any leads right now like is there any theory of the blast that is starting to emerge Well clearly terrorism is their primary theory they say they've launched a probe into what they call an act of terror but are looking to other possible causes of the blast certainly if you look at just the video that surfaced from and the images that surfaced after the attack you see these horrific images of twisted doors from the Metro car blasted outward video footage of Russians breaking windows and this really chaotic scene trying to drag injured people out of the car and to safety the Russian authorities said they've now issued warrants for 2. Then one is believed to placed what the Russian investigators say is a briefcase they found inside the wagon car that they believe contained an x. Explosive device there also issued a warrant for a 2nd man who they believe deposited a nother explosive device in a 2nd downtown metro station in St Petersburg only this one didn't go off and since been removed from the premises neutralized as Russia's 2nd largest city what kind of history has St Petersburg had with attacks in the public space you know in a way it's something that most people from St Petersburg aren't used to I think Russians are certainly no stranger to tragedies including terrorist acts but usually those have tended to stretch back into the heart of the Russian government meaning Moscow or they've been involved with the Northern Caucuses where Russia has had a long simmering on again and off again conflict with Islamic insurgents and terrorism issues down there but that said you know let's remember that St Petersburg if we go back to 2015 in the fall of 2015 the Metro jet airliner that was brought down over the Sinai Peninsula it was brought down with an explosive device onboard traveling from Egypt to St Petersburg over $200.00 Russians died and most of them were from St Petersburg So in that sense people from St Petersburg are no stranger to this kind of event I've seen varying reports from Russia today but a lot seem to suggest concern there that Putin might use this moment a consolidated power around the rationale of greater security measures that often been the routine Well there are concerns I think if you look at just various tragedies and in recent post Soviet Russian history can think back to the attack on the Beslan school by Chechen insurgents years ago that died and ended up with a response from the government was essentially harsh anti-terrorism laws they took away direct election of governors why that was tied to it nobody was really clear they've seen constantly this sort of fear among particularly opposition here that that the government uses these moments as a pretext to censure. Really crackdown on dissent there at the very least certainly rally people around the government you know it smacks of course of conspiracy but that's you know something the Russians or they think different to quite often and you know we've already seen calls to toughen what are already tough anti-terrorism laws here which have been directed often against perceived political enemies Charles Maynes in Moscow thanks as always thank you another tragedy has been unfolding in Russia specifically in Chechnya the war scarred Republic in Russia's Caucasus region there are reports that the authorities there have been rounding up men suspected of being gay and torturing them some have reportedly been killed Natalee until lovers editor in chief of Kota story an online publication She's based in Georgia across the border from Chechnya and a lover says Russian newspaper no via guys that broke the news about the game today and no Vegas published a piece on the Jane that over 100 gay men in Chechnya have been prosecuted arrested and in some cases murdered by the authorities in the Republic No I guess that is the only source of the story but would we know for sure is that there has been very strong outcry in recent days across the north caucuses because Russian group has applied for permission to hold a gay parades in the cities across the north caucuses there where of course denied permission gay parades are not allowed Russia but it seems to have resulted in this witch hunt on gay men in the Republic we spoke with an l g b t activists and Russian s. Vettel on a soccer of about this and here's what she told us were started to receive information about possible killings and kidnappings of people and we're not sure is a true or not but the start of The Hotline and then we started this information to conduct as are human rights organizations and human rights defenders and the 3rd now that information about killings and kidnappings. The. Natalia when we asked the 1st man why there is a crackdown on gay people now in Chechnya she told us that her activist organization has information but does not want to release it yet right now we don't talk about concrete separate cases for security reasons because we care about people who managed to escape or who gives to us could say I her aid that they can be killed or is it that friend I'm missing and I don't know where they are so the tally until lava has this been just going on for a week what have you heard Well the campaign against homosexuals not just in Chechnya but and Russia as a whole and across much of the Soviet Union this is an ongoing issue it's something that we've been tracing for the last year and the Russian state media ever since they passed a law against the so-called propaganda of homosexuality to minors they have also unleashed the entire Russian state media machine on this you know on a massive gay campaigning leading politicians in Russia have openly called for violence against gays and have very much embolden various groups that you know go and hunt gay men and women in Russia and it is especially difficult to gain Chechnya because it is very traditional because it's Muslim but also because you know in a country that isn't exactly a beacon for human rights or democracy or freedom in general Chechnya is truly a black hole I mean this is a place that's ruled by a man could 0 He is a very eccentric quite young leader of the Republic very close to Vladimir Putin is very open about prosecuting a punishing everyone who dares to criticize him so from murders of journalists to endorsing honor killings to endorsing the Russian policies against homosexuals What does seem to be new is this wave of prosecution of gay man that's reported by Nova and it's confirmed by various. Groups in Russia but again because it is such a traditional such a closed society it's very hard to get independent confirmations but there are certainly not please to show that this is indeed happening why is Putin's government so opposed to all g b t people I think the roots of they unsub gay sentiment in Russia go back to a formation of blood to where it was and latest presidency and he's attempts to find domestic enemies something that he could Reilly people around because he very much has positions himself as a protector off family values and traditional values not just in Russia but in the region and around the world I was always amazed covering the war in eastern Ukraine how often I would meet pro Russian protesters who when asked why are you processing against they progress toward forces in Kiev they would say because we don't want America to come here and impose homosexual marriage we don't want gays to be taking over and these are lines that are coming directly through the Russian media channels and through Russian state media and it started about 4 years ago when largemouth within when the Russian Duma passed the anti gay propaganda law and it has certainly yielded the results this entire region has become much more dangerous to be gay but Ali on the lava editor in chief of the online publication code of story she joined us from Tbilisi Natalia thank you very much thank you. Here in Boston 6 years ago Egypt's pro-democracy revolution overthrew a strongman Hosni Mubarak and stirred hope across the Arab world stirred hope in many places but now Egypt is back in the hands of a strongman General Abdel Fattah el-Sisi he sense hung up his military uniform for a suit and today he met with President Trump an admirer at the White House that's a big change for Sisi who is not exactly welcome in Washington when Barack Obama was president Buzz Feed Middle East correspondent Borzou Daragahi is with me on Skype from Istanbul So just remind us quickly who Sisi is Abdel Fatah. A longtime leader of the Egyptian military under Egypt's 1st legitimately elected president Mohamed Morsi he became the commander of the armed forces basically that you could one of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and in a 2013 coupe he deposed Morsi and took over himself as the sort of leader of the country and later installed himself as president after an election in which most of the major political 'd parties of the opposition were barred from participating Trump has a very different opinion of Sisi than Obama did then and even some Republicans one might say Trump met with c.c. In September when Trump was still on the campaign trail and was asked about c c on c.n.n. Let's listen to what he said these day as they took control of Egypt and he really took control. And then Donald Trump said this there was a very good chemistry good feeling between us so Borzou what do we know about the relationship between Trump and c.c. Well in all fairness when c c was in New York in September he also met with Hillary Clinton but yeah you know I mean these guys seem to have a similar attitude they value toughness and sort of strongman approach towards political leadership not really looking for consensus but a looking for imposing order there's a certain style similarity but you know one of the most interesting things is that not only we see see the 1st world leader to call Trump and congratulate him after the election he boasted about it for days and weeks afterward according to the people who were in Egypt at that moment when Trump was victorious the government was just elated it was gloating about Trump stick 3 finally people were saying in newspapers that are very close to the government we have a guy in the White House who will adopt our point of view and I think that that's faded and despite the Muslim ban despite the increase in hate crimes against Muslims in the us I don't think that that attitude towards Trump has faded at all among elites circles in Egypt what the c.c. Hoped to gain in these talks. More legitimacy regionally boost a mess to clean from having been seen with the most powerful man in the world and having been in his good graces right now Egypt's economy is in really bad shape it's sputtering when I 1st moved to Egypt in 2011 the Egyptian pound was about 6 or 7 to the dollar now it's about 18 or 19 so the idea of the currency has collapsed utterly And meanwhile wages have not kept up so there's just a lot of pressure on ordinary people a lot of anger in the streets Meanwhile police are acting with a much freer hand and you're seeing more incidents of just innocent saps being shot dead by cops and then right after that riots erupting and real unrest in the country so that beneath the surface of stability that Sisi seeks to project you know the countries see the various types of anger various frustrations and very possibly you know being seen with Trump could give his domestic enemies the message that hey you know this is a guy who's going to be around for a while better not mess with him more than what you find so fascinating about. Sisi being really the 1st leader from the Mideast to meet with Donald Trump it's just part of the consolidation of these illiberal leaders around the world you know you've got Trump you've got. Sisi you've got Putin you've got to some extent everyone you've got deter to in the Philippines you know this whole click of these these illiberal populists seems to be coalescing and supporting each other and I think that's kind of interesting this is perhaps the 1st time Trump is meeting with one of his real counterparts in the world Buzz Feed Middle East correspondent Borzou Daragahi thanks as always it's a pleasure thank you. About 2 weeks ago immigration agents raided a mobile home park in Las Cruces New Mexico they reportedly asked residents about their immigration status and took away some 20 of them since the raid at least one immigrant advocacy group is holding workshops for immigrants they focus on how to respond and what to do in cases of their homes being raided Simon Thompson is a reporter based in the us Chris with a from terrorist desk he joins me from there so it's really pretty intriguing how these workshops could be helping immigrants but if you would take us 1st back to February 15th what exactly went down at last Christmas so basically according to one woman who lives in the park at 6 am as she was getting her kids ready for school 7 on a mock to because arrived at her loss of all his mobile home park she says the cars block the entrance of the park agent seem to be looking for at least one person had a warrant for one identified and identified a portable man with a Spanish last name but when they didn't find him this is what's new is offices swept through the entire pocket banging on residents' doors house after house demanding they be let in and that people show their papers and others were obviously caught on the way out of the park by our sweating at the front and you know this is caused a lot of fear in the community people are staying in their homes there was a 60 percent spike in absences in last at the last Christmas public school district the following day after the action yet that doesn't suggest that the school students were arrested themselves other mostly that they were held back because their parents were being detained perhaps what I've been told is that concerned parents they want to drive them to school because I was scared to leave the house yesterday and the 20 people or so who were arrested do we know where any of them are now or what happened to them at all so it's really hard to track we've got about 5 of them that we are managed to trace that were in the dharna County Detention Center that's the county that last creases in the others have been really hard to find I've spoken to through immigration advocates and lawyers who say they could basically be anywhere in the country different detention centers locally all . It's really hard to trace an immigrant who's in a deportation proceedings if they haven't signed our lease already Simon had there been any raids in the last years this area before or was this really the 1st time that people had seen a raid of this scale so if you see I've spoken to kind of immigrants and immigrants in the community that and they kind of they're kind of surprised by the mainstream reaction and you know how much coverage is this is getting because you know they'll say that this is been happening for decades and then suddenly people are really you know taking note and standing up and you're standing up in solidarity but there's a sense that you know these actions you know kind of threatened and kind of directed by Trump he was very vocal about it but also that the rates and Skype with a start deportation actions are brought out you know our bomber had this kind of Department of Homeland Security Directive you know let's deport felons not families so these recent actions for a lot of loss christens marked the beginning of these sweeping indiscriminate actions where you know as they did in the right they went knocking from door to door just looking for people to deport So you know there's a concern that it's really just going to separate a lot of immigrant families that don't have any criminal violations I would guess it's incidents like the one in February that motivated a group like New Mexico cafe tell us what they do and what kind of work they're doing in response to the February raid so that they've had this training earlier but they really are going to drop to the public the 136 people come to this training to teach them how to respond to us right so you know that's anything little just like by being there maybe filming the action to make sure that ice you know is how to countable for any violations but also if they have the families that have you know in these proceedings or in this neighborhood admission well even interrupt their rights are now mayn't standing in front of us trucks you know are nonviolently maybe holding on to the tie up blocking straights off a lot of a willing to get arrested I spoke to James Holmes in she's a retired she's a u.s. Citizen you know she's watch so she doesn't have as lot of the risk that a lot of other people. Well I'm willing to get arrested I'm willing to to interfere directly with the arrests or the detention and possible deportation of an individual All right well as you said Simon some people are you know a little more protected and affluent and are able to do this at how risk prone are some of these people their training it's a real mix but you know I was expecting to see a lot of members of the immigrant communities a lot of Hispanic people but it was largely students and a lot of retirees and if you speak to these retiree's like John Thompson they kind of say you know I don't have a job I have got u.s. Citizenship I really don't have that much to lose and I feel an obligation as a person that you know is in this position to help people that who are more vulnerable and in the training they really kind of line up and delineate who should be involved in what in accordance to the risk involved for them Simon Thompson with the from terrorist reporting project speaking with us from Los Crucis New Mexico thank you for your time today Simon thank you Maka in 2003 Cuba opened up its economy to allow its people to own small businesses and today have Ana is flush with all sorts of small mom and pop enterprises from people who rent rooms in their homes to private restaurants and shops that sell everything from clothes to cellphone accessories Cubans who are part of this new economy tend to make much more money than those who work for the Cuban state and they tend to be white people Fernandez reports on what it's like to be a small business owner and black in a van a inside upright aren't House in the residential have on a neighborhood of evolve Oh a baker is doing a Prisk trying a low this is my bakery Hello good to be here it's Mel's good India Preval did not only on his whole wheat bread chocolatey pastries have a reputation in Vattel West but I somehow mon ami this look you. See in the family from a simple man by name is power not sort of the not too little His path was. Naisi He says his father pushed him to learn a trade at age 17 and he didn't want to be a plumber or mechanic and I was talking one day with my father and I taught him that what about a fan become a bakery and he taught me a great that everyone needs to eat bread every day or other do or he learned his trade at a local state run bakery that made the bread rolls which people received as part of the daily ration of food he went on to work a logic state bakery and then finally decided to start his own shop and had no money to. Put some tables and we paint cost a lot of money buying a lot of things that we need here and I got my money he similar to many small business owners who struggle a lot when they 1st stop and not unlike the situation for African-Americans access to capital is a great a problem if you're Africa Cuban and if you're white says $100.00 then off went the director of the after Latin American Research Institute at Harvard University as one of my collaborators in Cuba dollars are white Most dollars arriving Cuba through family remittances from the Cuban American community in south Florida and that communities are overwhelmingly white a 2nd barrier to entry for Africa is real estate that afford they says most small businesses are run out of $100.00 a storefront is likely the front porch but having a nice home in an area where people with money for quiet is more often a luxury of white Cubans historically and this predates the Cuban revolution blacks were concentrated in the poorest areas of the city and African been still live in the city's poor areas bakery are not the not the Leon says pre-revolution Cuba has had another lingering impact on Africa starting small businesses today there's no family knowledge of owning a business to pass down that is not to most black people. In the past who had business. If I had a father who. Had a business I want to imitate him that was the case for Mattie's Aletta and her mother they started making leather bags and they harm on the outskirts of Havana back in 1902 so a letter would sell her bags to store owners who would resell them to have their own stole they would have to find a place to rent get a license from the government and pay a monthly fee like a small business tax that itself was a challenge for the mother daughter team for years until. My mom retired she was a professor and after she retired from a professional work life she finally had time to apply for a small business license. And 3 years ago they managed open a stall on a quaint cobbled street in a very touristy area of ultra Bana it. Happens a high lovely rent payment to me which is tough it's a slow business because we make all our beds ourselves this isn't like making food where you turn of the product daily these are really kind of luxury items it's a legacy upfront investment needed and the ongoing need to reinvest as a major barrier to more Africa and starting small businesses they just don't have the resources to do it and says have it's their life went there this is leading to a stock economic divide between white and black Cubans he thinks the Cuban government should step in you could concentrate development funds in some of the poorest areas of residence in those areas could use public funds to launch their own businesses that when this is employees also need to focus on hiring for Cubans you could look at the possibility of establishing labor policies make sure that the emergent private sector actually is open and is forced to incorporate and to hire people of African descent. It's exactly what. Belden author Leon prioritizes in his thriving bakery because he says people in his own community see him as someone who made it so they come to him regularly asking me to hold my song. Me They need the morning and they need to work. So he finds work for people like grating days Alfred to make bread crumbs which is now a tough sell off an elderly man doing the trading has a well paid job for the wealth. P.b.s. You know the one thing about being a producer here at k. P.b.s. Is people probably don't realize how important that job is because you're kind of behind the scenes but there are things that you're working on special projects all the time what are you working on right now all the time so yesterday I work for midday edition which you know you listeners out there probably hear noon Monday through Friday with morning kavanah and one of the things you've been working on since last fall is this 1st person series so a lot of the reports you hear on midday additional of the reports here on k p.b.s. Involve the reporter narrating the story what's going on the idea here is to take the reporter and the producer out of it to just hear the voices of people in San Diego to tell their stories so that's the 1st person series and they're often really personal stories I just want to mention one that we aired a few months ago just last month actually we heard from a guy named Norm Johnson who's $83.00 he returned to San Diego just last month to receive his high school diploma because he had dropped out of high school to join the Korean War and his life was sort of crazy he was the bodyguard for General Douglas MacArthur during the Korean War and he danced with Elvis in jailhouse rock the movie he became a professional dancer there and he went to Vegas you know this crazy career as a promoter and then he came back to San Diego where he grew up to get his high school diploma at age 83 and that's a story you can hear through our 1st person series which now we're putting into a podcast form so if you've missed it on Monday edition at noon you can catch up on the podcast This is one thing I'm not sure a lot of people really realize that stories like this are only on k.
