From the City of Angels near the Pacific Ocean Good morning good evening where ever you may be across the nation and around the world on George Norry welcome to coast to coast am what a great program we have in store for you tonight in just a moment theoretical physicist Michio Kaku joins us later on tonight David Adair the rocket man protecting the grid. Is what's happening 3 hours of the Donald Trump has announced that he has recommended that. Bomb stocks devices that let some I automatically weapons fire hundreds of rounds per minute be banned Mr Trump signed a memorandum recommending that Attorney General Jeff Sessions propose regulations that would declare that bump stocks are illegal because they effectively turned legal semiautomatic weapons into outlawed machine guns a South Korean official who guided souls regulatory clamp down on crypto currency has been found dead he was the head of economic policy he helped coordinate efforts to create new legislation aimed at suppressing cryptocurrency speculation and illicit activity they say died of a heart attack police there are investigating lots going on in the world Lee's days let's check in with Andre Eglash on author of the eaves in the temple Andre What do you think what's happening these days well George I mean I'm just amazed at how things are really turning me turning out thanks Fred. The way I really expected them to I mean the government is having a hard time borrowing money you know we're seeing a huge selloff in our short term debt right now you know selling off the bonds simply because the yields are rising the government needs money they know that the Fed is pulling back on its accommodation we have a lot of outstanding obligations we have a tax cut to pay for We've got infrastructure spending today to pay for we have you know the unexpected. You know incidents of national significance that we may have to pay for in the future such as or a cane or something like that never know you've got to have you know money on hand and the Treasury right now since the Fed is pulling back there's selling off bonds and you know so i gess the short term bar markets you know kind of in a tizzy right now George Well you think we're going to pull through you know I've had some experts on Andre that think the stock market's going to tank What do you think the I think it is as well you know I mean you know the only thing that has really sustain the stock market going forward I should say the only thing we've had wild speculations but I'm thinking of you know the subtle reserves liquidity but we've had rampant speculation going on for a long long time but it's thanks to a lot of the liquidity that isn't it up on Wall Street wall that accommodation by the Central Bank is coming to an end we've got a Fed chair right now that does not even have a Ph d. In economics no background in economics you know the guy was a lawyer and you know so he's going to have to rely on the Federal Reserve board of governors that are there right now I would strongly urge him to listen to. You know wise advice because they can't get this wrong they cannot overtightened I can't say this enough George this economy is getting ready it's going to have to slow down the Fed's going to have to raise interest rates we will see a slowdown across you know virtually every sector of the market as we move forward because of the pinion. In the swinging back the other way though Ok my friend keep in touch Andrea Galicia on whole why these nuclear missiles scare showed that the state began testing alerts before fully developing a plan to address the ballistic missile threat and that a public outreach campaign months earlier was not effective at all any attacks carried out against Iran will result in the dish direction of Tel Aviv according to the Secretary of Iran's Expediency Council warning Israel the comment reported by the summit official Fars News Agency came in response apparently to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his remarks at the Munich Security Conference the official from Moran said that if Israel carries out the slightest unwise move against Iran we will level Tel Aviv to the ground and will not give any opportunity for Netanyahu to flee on trouble all over this planet a swarm of more than $200.00 quakes struck Yellowstone National Park over the past couple weeks but that probably doesn't mean the big one is coming anytime soon according to geologists from the park but let's check in with Cal Laurie author of the man who predicts earthquakes about the late Jim Berkland Cal what do you think about Yellowstone I mean that Caldera could if that goes what a mess yeah I kind of predicted that for 2010 forecast I forgot that I said. Where as some strange activity would be happening around Yellowstone and then tonight. Kind of ironic I was watching 2012 and I one of the characters said when the government tells you not to panic that's when you do. That I know worried about Yellowstone yet but I'm more concerned I told to last time I was on early January the Cascadian subduction zone and do you remember January 23rd say. In Plane tsunami alert can't get much bigger than down the less cust I told you guys that well that's why we always check in with you speaking of that what are you working on these days i California it's too quiet we're in a make a drought no snow a tough Oh very eerie after last year getting dumped on I'm going to say California it's too quiet it's too weird British shaky state where are there earthquakes I know the last time I was on we had the east they got the Hayward fault and I told you it was a sleeping giant There was a 3.6 I think there today California's next I'm going to say it I wrote down just kind of automatic writing off shore Northern California fire Rica and maybe southern California greater Los Angeles to California before summer I'm going to say 80 percent like Jim Bourke when I always did Bill check in with a cow keep in touch a woman in Georgia living alone in a home awarded to her husband in a divorce started a fire in the living room that quickly spread to 19 other houses causing more than a $1000000.00 in damage and 2 dogs and a cat died in that disaster bad days are as much an American pastime they say as baseball and apple pie according to a new study researchers commissioned a poll of nearly 2000 working Americans about how they dealt with stress hoping to learn more about what constituted a bad day respondents on the average indicated that they had 60 bad days a year with 80 percent of these 24 hour periods being made at least partially unpleasant by work work related issues and event in earth's history when plants appeared on land may have happened a 100000000 years earlier than previously thought land plants evolve from what they say pond scum about 500000000 years ago according to the new. Research Claudia equally is positive that she and her 2 children came across a big foot in a tree in Southern California last year when she called different state authorities to report the sighting she got the same response Nope they told her you saw a bear as a result the 46 year old has now filed a lawsuit against the state for failing to recognize Sasquatch as a distinct species we'll see what happens there next stop the future of humanity Michio Kaku joins us on coast to coast am. And welcome back to coast to coast George Noory with you according to renowned theoretical physicist Michio Kaku we have reached a turning point in society the next 100 years of science will determine whether we perish or thrive and will we remain a typo's civilization or will we advance and make our way to the stars his latest work is called the future of humanity to reforming Mars interstellar travel immortality and our destiny beyond Earth Michio Kaku one of our favorite guests back on Coast to Coast Hello there Mr Professor how are yeah very good glad to be on the show once again good to have you back you've been very busy over the past couple years you're everywhere these days Michio thank you so have you back everything good yeah I've been very I've been out on a book tour right now in Boston and I was spoken New York yesterday and I was on c.b.s. This morning this morning and n.p.r. Very busy and I'm keeping you up late and on the East Coast and I Yes but that's all right but there's a great book I mean you did write one back in 2015 called The Future of mind about science but this one's on the future of humanity and you've been quoted as saying that we better get our act together how bad how bad are we handling things right now as humans Yeah well you know as I said the transition from 0 civilization to a type one is perhaps the most dangerous because we still exist in a fragmented think Tarion fundamentalist world where a lot of nationalist think in thinks jump out but by the time you can type one we're planetary that is we can control the weather we control natural phenomenon drought and famine and. Like that so when the danger period because we still have all the savagery of a type 0 civilization surrounding us but I'm I tend to be optimistic I hope that we'll get through it and by the end of the century become truly planetary Do you really think we need to leave the planet how come well I think we need an insurance policy you know I was talk to Carl Sagan and he said we live in the middle of a shooting gallery so many asteroids hit the Earth all the time and look at the dinosaurs dinosaurs didn't have a space program that's why the dinosaurs aren't here today they were around for 200000000 years and never built a single rocket ship now we do have rocket ships and if we don't want to go the way the dinosaurs we need an insurance policy plan b. We don't want to necessarily remove everyone from the earth and go to Mars No we're saying that we need settlements just as an insurance policy a plan b. Just in case something bad happens to the earth if global warming gets out of control if we had designer germs if we have a limited nuclear exchange in case something bad happens we need an insurance policy that's the way Carl Sagan put it to me and it's an insurance policy to ensure that humanity continues someplace Yeah that's right we need to make sure that we well as Iran must has said that we should become a multi planet species in fact Iran must have space x. Doesn't just talk a big talk you actually does something 3 weeks ago millions millions of people tuned into the launch of the Falcon Heavy rock it was amazing what's in it that's right and Sauza blind up on the streets of Cape Canaveral the why is that because this rocket is different it's a moon rocket it is fully capable after 50 years after a 50 year gap it's fully capable of reaching the moon with the Dragon space capsule and not only that get this get to foot the. He did he did that's right you got a free moon rocket I mean you can look at gift horse in the mouth right we got a free moon rocket and he wants that uses as a stepping stone to the stars and here's a billionaire willing to put his checkbook on the line which I think is great incredible Is he going to get his money back do you think eventual if he keeps doing what he's doing well of course he is a businessman and he has a business plan and he hopes to eventually creating human bigger rocket that will take thousands of settlers to Mars it's called the b.f.r. It's an even bigger than the the Falcon Heavy rocket which is almost the size of a Saturn 5 rocket the b.f.r. Beast as were big our stands for rocket and you can imagine was the s.s. For Yeah exactly. Are we going to slow or to fast and you're thinking well you know the president of the United States got frustrated and Donald Trump said like he's going to sign an executive order to end all the speculation NASA has been an agency to nowhere in my opinion I mean we've been spinning wheels for 50 years now we've been doing science and sending probed Ok good I like that but that's it and so the public is sort of gotten you know they you know on every 10 every time there's a new space probe that goes up young people are not inspired there are no more Sputnik moment says President Barack Obama said and President from laid it out last December he laid it out and said in executive order we go to the moon we go to Mars and beyond that's an executive order and so all of a sudden this agency's no hair has a direction and you know what's different people say what's different today costs have dropped dramatically says the 1960 s. You know that movie the Martian with Matt Damon all great movie that's really. Over $100000000.00 Now you know the Indians send a space probe to Mars for $70000000.00 in other words a movie about going to Mars costs more than actually go. Ginger give the Oscar for The Best Supporting space probe to Mars and that's how much the economics of change China wanted to put a flag on the moon think about that back in the 1960 s. Who believe that if you said that India would be going to Mars with probes China would be sticking flags in the moon who would have believed that 50 years ago and then a private individual would be financing the rocket on its own you'd be considered nuts to say that back in the 1960 s. But that's the reality of today that rocket the the Falcon Heavy rocket is a reusable rocket now think of the used car market after World War 2 there were so many G.I.'s that came back from the war penniless they couldn't buy a car that all of a sudden the used car market opened up and then that changed the American lifestyle even teenagers began to via cars that's right well usable rockets that's going to reduce the cost of space travel by factor of $10.00 because $10000.00 a pound to put anything in orbit around the Earth that's your weight in gold I magine yourself made out of solid gold and that's what it cost to put you just in orbit around the earth Elon Musk going to bring it down to affected by a factor of 10 to perhaps a $1000.00 of that's going to open up open up outer space to the average person this is incredible it is incredible what about Nasa's plans to go back to the moon and is there a timetable here yes for the 1st time just a few months ago they finally after being coy for so many years finally it as a timetable 1st of all next year we go back to the moon I repeat next year we're going back to the moon after 50. Gap It's called the s.l.s. Booster rocket they have their blister rocket we have to booster rockets not you mention that to booster rocket one we pay for the other $1.00 he pays for right that's right the s.l.s. Booster rocket we paid for from our taxes but one must pay for the stock and heavy from his own checkbook now end of 2019 we're going to have an unmanned probe go around the moon with the Orion space capsule it's a moon rocket capable of putting astronauts on the moon but we're just going to go around the moon in 20192023 that's when we actually send astronauts around the moon 2026. We're going to build a lunar orbiter we're going to be orbiting around the moon just like the orbit around the earth with the space station and then sometime after 2030 we're going to go on to Mars so that's the rough timetable the NASA laid out and you have Musk even wants to accelerate that timetable he wants to go to Mars within 10 years once we get to Mars Michio do you think we're going to find something that may prove that there was extraterrestrial life there well you know we have not analyzed the entire surface of Mars the most interesting places on Mars are 1st of all the ice caps we haven't been there because it's a little dangerous to land a rock in on the ice caps 2nd of all we have not gone underground we don't know what's a need to so we haven't gone into the lava tubes the caves of Mars if you were a Martian billions of years ago when Mars was losing its water the water went into outer space and went into the ice cap the snow and it was into the ground as from a frost Where would you go you would go into outer space through the ice caps underground and these are the places that we have not investigated so even though we've landed probes on Mars they've only landed in safe areas which are flat no geologic things to get in the way so we have yet to go to places that are interesting like the ice caps with plenty of water or the lava tubes or underground where there's plenty of activity down there and so there's a lot about Mars that we simply don't know but one day we will find out won't we. That's right we're going to be in a situation whereby sometime in the 2030 we're going to send astronauts to to Mars not remember that going to the moon was a piece of cake 3 days you're on the moon you can leave on Wednesday I mean to leave on Monday and come back out on Friday and we got to do with 50 year old technology for crying out that right now we're going to go to Mars is give you a much longer trip let's be clear about this 2 years 9 months trip to get to Mars a few months to do scientific work and 9 months ship to get back to you to your trip you got to be pretty hardy you got to be like an astronaut an Air Force pilot or a volunteer someone who's really into it to volunteer for a mission like this and believe it or not people are signing up now. They may never come back oh no well we want to make sure they do come back in the media there was a story that had if you go to Mars you're going to die on Mars No I don't think so you know unless it was quoted as saying that he would himself love to go to Mars but not on impact you know you know want to die on my now but it but there and back it's what a 3 year trip almost if you stay trip right 9 months to get there 9 months to get back a few months to do scientific work and scout out the territory trip so many things could change by the time you come back to planet Earth. That's about that. Yeah we're going to take a break we're going to come back we'll talk more about your book the future of humanity I want to get into these advanced civilizations How high do you think we can go get your take on your phone and maybe you can help explain to us what the Big Bang is time George Norry will be back in a moment with Michio Kaku Next hour he'll be with us we'll take phone calls where. Fan Welcome back to coast to coast we're here with Professor Michio Kaku But you know how long will it take to to reform Mars in do we need to have a to reform before we really can go there and settle. Well 1st we want to get an outpost on Mars we're going to probably use lava tubes that already exist ready made ready made caves on Mars then we're going to have of course the solar panels display to grain to gain energy we're going to start with the mining operation to mine the ice ice can be purified for water separated out for oxygen for breathing and then hydrogen for rocket fuel and then after that agriculture will get started on Mars and we'll do that with genetically modified algae and plants that can thrive thrive in the harsh environment of Mars so once we have an agriculture set up get a set of farms and so we'll have a self-sustaining settlement without having to have the apron strings tied to the earth will have a self-sufficient settlement on planet Mars not the Terra for Mars that is a turn Mars into a garden of Eden that will require technology of the next century when we have solar satellites satellites said being light energy down to the ice caps and melt the ice caps there's plenty of water on Mars except the water is frozen by having these satellites beam energy down to the polar icecaps we can let liquid water flow freely in the river beds and ocean beds of Mars Mars once upon a time had an ocean as big as the United States of America that's how big that ocean was but it's all gone now but we can we can reclaim it by beginning to heat up the North Pole and the South Pole to create a greenhouse effect too to let water flow freely on the surface of Mars after billions of years so it's a long process but we gotta start somewhere how exciting just to think of the prospects of doing that. Yeah and this is a doable technology we're not talking about putting this guy anymore as I mentioned Hollywood films are more expensive than actually going to Mars incredible they had to give an Oscar for The Best Supporting space probe because missions to Mars cost less than $100000000.00 but Hollywood more than a $100000000.00 and so we're at the point now where you know China India a lot of players also want to put their stamp in outer space as well that's how it she things have come there's a Russian astrophysicist is going to be 86 in April and you know him well Nikolai a dash of and they came up with the type 123 civilizations now people were talking about 4 in 5 the does it go out that far Well in principle yes we have in the galaxy we have of course planets stars and galaxies However is there something that is extra go lactic So Type one would correspond to a planetary civilisation a type 2 it correspond to a stellar civilization like Star Trek and then a type 3 would be galactically like Star Wars and what could be extra lactic hell if you think about it on Star Trek we have the Q The Q Is extra galactic that is a play with galaxies they are outside the Milky Way galaxy and so yeah in principle they could be a type for which would be extra galactic it was kind of energy would they use and they would use dark energy the energy of nothing the energy of a vacuum the energy of the Big Bang the energy that is pushing the galaxies apart is the expanding universe and so yes there is an energy supply even greater than the energy supply of a galaxy or a black hole and that is dark energy which by the way makes up 7. T. 3 percent of the matter energy content of the entire universe so we by the way hydrogen helium in the higher elements really go about 4 percent about 4 percent of the matter energy of the universe dark energy which could be the energy of a type for civilization would comprise 70 percent of the energy and matter of the universe and you say we're a type one a 0 right now yeah we're fragmented we have fundamentalist we have nations we have all sorts of chaos type 0 where we just came out of the swamp a few 100 years ago but you know we're about 100 years away from Type one for example what is the Internet the Internet is the beginning of the 1st type one technology Ok we are privileged to be alive to witness the birth of the 1st type one technology a planetary technology called the Internet generally one of the stages of the of time between the types like between one and 200 years 500 years how long do you think it would take on an exponential scale so if you go to my book I give I actually give you the formula you gave us a gale snack Ok so we're about 100 years being away from type one and you can see that like a type when language is being born right before our eyes on the Internet English and Mandarin Chinese are the 2 most popular languages on the internet with a beginning of a type in sports the Olympics. Soccer beginning a pipeline sports with you know beginning the type of music used music youth culture rock'n'roll rap we see the beginning of a type one high fashion with set out so when you go around the earth begin to realize that we are seeing the beginnings of a type one culture right before our eyes just amazing technology to be able to get to these different stages if you're right at the end let's say a civilization level of 4 or 5. I How far have you progressed Oh well take a look at it this way by the time you're Type one you can play with planets type 2 you can ignite stars live like they do in Star Trek you actually ignite stars on Star Trek type 3 if you roam the galactic space planes and black holes you can use black holes as gateways you can use black holes as power supplies and if you type for 4 you can go between galaxies I mean think about that we're talking about an unimaginative amount of energy on that scale now of course we've looked for these things to we physicists don't just simply pontificate about that we look for them we look for type one in our area and so far we see nothing which is what some people to believe they even type ones could be a little bit unstable perhaps they blew themselves up for or had global warming take over but Type 2 is immortal nothing known to science can destroy a type 2 civilization meteors can be deflected asteroids can be destroyed you can even move the planet earth type 2 civilization could escape it when their mother stars explodes and become our Nova so it's hard to is immortal and therefore we look for them very seriously we have a look at satellite data so far we've had a few interesting candidates but right now nothing conclusive but we are looking for type 2 in outer space might there be Type 3 and 4 and 5 stop there definitely I mean if if a civilization could reach the Earth from thousands of light years that means that yeah they're there too are more and more than likely type 3 civilization but that time there is a lactic and then their power source is the Planck energy the Planck energy is the energy of spacetime itself the Black Energy has tended to 19000000000 electron volts that is. A quadrillion times more powerful than the Large Hadron Collider it is the energy of a black hole it is the energy of the Big Bang so by the time you're Type 3 it may be possible to drill a hole in space and time I warm home I want to help us 1st and it is by Einstein himself in 1035 as a gateway as a passageway so as matter falls into a black hole is blown out the other end as a white hole so this is still a theory we've looked for a Whitehall's we haven't found any but some people even think that the big bang could be a white hole that matter falls into this singularity and blows out the other end as a Whitehall which is a big bang which is what I need to ask you because I just still don't get it Michio the Big Bang something banging from nothing how can that be. Well we don't know for sure but Einstein give the picture that the universe is a bubble of some sort we live on the skin of the bubble and the bubble is expanding that's called the Big Bang Theory but now we are going beyond Einstein into something called string theory which is what I do for a living and in string theory there are other bubbles out there other bubbles and sometimes these bubbles bump into each other to create a bigger bubble sometimes they fission and love baby bubbles and that's called the Big Bang so the big bang is nothing but the collision of universes or the peeling off of baby universes and that happens all the time so we're talking about eternal creation of universes and believe it or not this fits the data we're just not b.s. Ing and trying to impress ourselves at the dinner table we have data the data fits this basic picture that there is a Multi-verse universe is out there and that of course a lot of people come up to me and say Fessor does that mean that Elvis Presley is still alive in one of these parallel universes. Well it can't be ruled out that chappie ruled out which is amazing possibility what do we have doppelganger results or images of ourselves Well 1st of all I think just in the next few years we will find a double Yankee in outer space circling another star we have found about 20 Super Earth that is planets going around stars that are maybe 50 percent 100 percent bigger than the Earth it's only a matter of time just a few years before we find a double ganger of the earth so at night when you look at the nice guy you realize that on average every single star you see at night has a planet going around that let me repeat that at night on average every single star you see it has a. And going around is mainly a Jupiter sized planet but about one in 20 have Earth sized planet this means that the galaxy our backyard the Milky Way galaxy there are probably several 1000000000 several 1000000000 earth like planets just in a backyard I mean this boggles the imagination but that's what science tells us we've identified these planets cataloguing that we have encyclopedias now encyclopedias of these planets and by golly handful of them look just like the earth but you tell me your thoughts about extraterrestrial life do you think we can have we been visited. Well 1st of all I think they're out there I mean to believe that the only game in town that there are a 1000000000 or so Earth like planets in the galaxy and we're the only ones with intelligent life I mean come on give me a break. Many of these plan is probably have microbial life that is bacteria type microorganisms in an ocean Ok but some of them some of them a fraction of them probably have organisms like fish and maybe the fish evolved into intelligent beings it's simply cannot be ruled out anymore and so there used to be something called the giggle factor that is when a scientist we hear somebody talk about aliens from outer space you know scientists would giggle in their eyes would roll up into the heavens and they would just let out a sigh Well those days are gone they're gone because in our leading institutions we have exo biologists we have scientists who created a new field of science called exobiology where they look at the biology of alien life in outer space what might they look like how might they evolve what happens if we encounter them all these questions are being asked a scientific conferences not you have all conferences but in scientific conferences Yeah we scientists ask these questions now. It's amazing amazing work the name of the book of course is called the future of humanity to reforming Mars interstellar travel immortality and our destiny beyond Earth what about immortality Michio How long can we live Yeah well you know if you take a look at animals the Greenland shark believe it or not has one of the World Records it lives more than 400 years of age now how do we know that well the eye of the Greenland shark has layers on it just like the layers of a tree ring you count them when you count and you find out that they live more than 400 years of age this is astounding the fact that you can have a version bred like a real an shark that is that long and of course it's genetic So when you look at the genes of all people all humans you look at the genes of young people and then you subtract and you find that with the aging process is you find that aging is concentrated in a handful of genes now which ones if I have a car you have to ask yourself where does aging take place in a car well the the engine I think you have moving parts there that's where you have combustion there well we're in a cell the you have combustion and oxidation the mitochondria and where does a lot of this wear and tear build up the mitochondria Bingo so we know no more or less where a lot of this aging tastes place in the cell and therefore by we'll use one day a gene therapy the therapy to fix those genes as they start to break down so aging is no longer this big mystery we now know what aging is aging is the buildup of error genetic error cellular error and when these errors build up over time cells get sluggish they don't work they're not as a lasting as they used to be and then slowly we die effect. That's why we die as an accumulation of errors so if we can correct these errors in principle we might be able to live forever now we're beginning to find the enzymes find the mechanisms behind this there's something called a llama race for example there's a biological clock in our cells that can be stopped cells divide about 60 times by skin cells and then they grow old and eventually die 60 is roughly the lifetime of the number of reproductions of a skin cell however some rate stops the clock we can now immortalized skin cells now this verb immortalised didn't exist at the English language there was no such word but we had to invent one because now we can immortalized skin cells by hitting them with Salaam race now what's the catch there's always a catch someplace right the catch is that cancer cells are also immortal they divide forever that's why they form a tumor and that's why they kill you cancer is dangerous precisely because they are immortal it turns out that Tom arrays is used by cancerous cells to become immortal so we have to be very careful this is powerful stuff now we're talking about we have a very careful using enzymes like collaborates because if you use the wrong way it could cause cancer but the point I'm raising is something very simple we're on to something we don't have it yet we don't have the fountain of youth over getting tents and lighting the clothes and I wouldn't be surprised at all if our grandkids our grand kids at the age of 30 and then they decide to stop stop and simply live to be 30 for decades and decades to come I would be surprised if that happens. It would not be a shock would it no and that's why I put it in my book because the distances between stars is so great that we may want to either a go through a suspended animation or be simply length in our life span so that we can visit the stars Mitchell We're going to take a quick break and come back and take a final our phone calls with you everybody's interested in chatting with Professor Michio Kaku author of the latest book called The future of humanity his website is linked up for you and coast to coast am dot com It's am making a kid a huge dot org But it's right there at coast to coast am dot com feeling not close to your radio grab your smartphone or computer and listen to i Heart Radio pick up the free i Heart Radio Absolutely and store or go to i Heart Radio dot com.
