Happy to be back with you tonight on what is a gorgeous evening here in the desert. Tonight we have a pair of bright engaging guests ambitious and Jed subject wise you know Bill Burns from his work with u.f.o. Magazine and then on you off the hunters the t.v. Series has written several bestselling and compelling books on topics of special interest to our audience Roswell Phil Corso j.f.k. Bill is always a consummate pro who knows how to tell a good story and tonight he returns with a doozy the focus is 2 of the greatest minds in human history inventors visionaries Thomas Edison and Nikola Tesla if you've read much about those 2 then chances are you know they didn't like each other very much they were giants in their time but became bitter rivals and though the world is still living with the consequences of that rivalry Bill Burns and his co-writer Joel Martin to put together an intriguing and little known part of the Edison Tesla saga both of these geniuses were intrigued by the possibility of communicating with the dead Edison historians will probably dispute this view in fact I know they have they already have many times and the idea that Edison was working on a machine that might contact people who moved on to the next plane of existence would likely drive some of them up the wall we're Ok with that so as Bill Burns he will join me in a few minutes to make the case was Thomas Edison trying to build a so-called spirit phone and was Tesla on the same trail perhaps in competition with his arch rival we'll hear the evidence the book is called Edison versus Tesla the battle over their last invention and I think you'll be intrigued as intrigued as with this as I was then in the 2nd half the night. What's with all the zombies everywhere we look the rotting corpses are lurking ready to eat our brains and t.v. Shows and movies and comic books and video games and commercials even slot machines at casinos here what does it say about us to be so interested in telling and retelling various zombie scenarios the human fascination with apocalyptic scenes is nothing new of course the zombie apocalypse has been a fixture of modern culture since the late sixty's but it's bigger than ever now and various incarnations of the same scenario have been with us throughout human history at particular times when stress levels are high when we face existential threats or collective identity crossroads when we really don't know what tomorrow might hold if there is a tomorrow I guess you could say right now would qualify as one of those times that you know the North Korean situation sure looks like it's heading toward an ugly calamitous conclusion one way or another get the refugee crisis around the world mass migrations tensions racial and social upheavals violence and war not to mention natural calamities just the last month or so massive hurricanes killer earthquakes deadly wildfires drought you name it you know we're missing as plagues of locusts and raining frogs. Greg Garrett has never been on the program before but I think you'll really enjoy this book smart thoughtful treatment that he's given to zombies what it might mean what it tells us about ourselves to be so interested some surprising findings and he cast a really wide net over our seemingly insatiable hunger for brains I mean zombies and zombie narratives and scenarios His book is called Living with the Living Dead the wisdom of the zombie apocalypse and I think the title fits because there is wisdom in this book it's highly entertaining you know for those who don't get the endless appetite resign b.s. This is for you and if you can't get enough zombies it's for you too so that's coming up in the 2nd half tonight 2 hours from now one other piece of business before we proceed a lot to write to me on a regular basis asking about Tom De Long What's up with Tom when are we going to hear some news from him as many listeners might know during an interview with us earlier this year he said he planned to announce some ambitious plans over the summer and then you know summer came and went at the beginning of summer as you might recall I passed along the word that his plans are taking longer to put together than he could have predicted I think once he takes the wraps off some of these things he has in mind you'll have a better understanding why it took a while. So when what might we hear something from him I'd say within the next 2 weeks I think there will be an announcement about his plans a public announcement of some sort or release and then I'm pretty sure we will get to interview Tom De Long live on this program in October and he might even bring along some other people who will be working with him on his various endeavors and that's a program I think you'll want to hear as I've said before I think if you expect him to announce something like u.f.o. Disclosure and you got to be disappointed because that was never his claim or intention but from what I've heard he's got some really big ideas in the works and is attracted some heavyweight people to be part of it as we say in the radio biz stay tuned our webmaster Greg Bishop and I have called together our usual assortment of items and oddities from various media sources around the world we call it naps news you can find it on the coast to coast website among the stories we have posted there tonight in the general subject of impending apocalypse the possibility of a pandemic needs to be mention we are already seeing the development of superbugs resistant to antibiotics scares the bejesus out of health experts we have a Time magazine story that provides a timely update on that topic also haven't heard about Harvey in a while remember heart it's making a splash he come back here soon as part of a really colorful experiment you can read the story. Welcome back Bill Burns is a New York Times best selling author magazine publisher a literary agent who has written and edited more than 25 books and encyclopaedias in fields of human behavior true crime current affairs history business computing and the paranormal and he's back to talk about a book he co-wrote with Joel Martin called Edison versus Tesla the battle over their last invention Bill always good to have you here Oh thank you it's always my pleasure George good to speak to you this is a good one it's a it's a lot of fun I imagine that you're going to get feedback blowback from Edison purists I don't know if that's true for Tesla purists or not what's it been like so far well part of the research we did to the book was at the Edison foundation the Edison laboratory in Menlo Park New Jersey and I spoke to a few of his biographers there. And one of the big questions that I asked was how come nobody before has written about the spirit phone and why wasn't this a much bigger deal after Edison died I mean he died in 132 why wasn't this a much bigger deal and here's what I found out I found out that in 1920 Edison had revealed that he was expelled and he revealed this in the magazine modern mechanics which was publishing back then he had revealed that he was planning a device he had concocted yet come up with a theory it was actually a theory that is believe it or not in use today we are using it today not to talk to the dead but for other purposes other types of communication he'd come up with a feeling about how protons could be able to paying electrons in the presence of electrons and form a communications device but he believed that the electrons of human consciousness existed after a person died he called them life units and he wrote about this in his journal and the other fascinating part about this was that Edison had a very very voluminous Journal the Edison diaries but the section on Edison its belief in the afterlife on extra terrestrials on the theory of panspermia on the theory of Gaia on this theory of reincarnation was excised from his published journals in other words his family edited out all those we'd call them now. Paranormal chapters. And one of the reasons was this that. In the last decade of his life Edison was no longer just an inventor he kind of left that phase 20 years earlier what Edison had become was a just he was the Bill Gates of his time the Steve Jobs of his time he was the inventor who invented the invention factory and he was the head of his own company called General Electric which now is General Electric universal owning Comcast owning movie studios owning n.b.c. He was the head of that and so he was now one of the corporate mega moguls in the United States and when he announced that he was working on a device to contact the dead he was subjected to the most horrific blowback from politicians. From other corporate executives and from the entire religious community that accused him of demonology and it's so frightened his board of directors a General Electric of his family members remember his son was going to I was going to be the governor of New Jersey and so it's so frightened all the people who really owns their fortunes to Edison that they forced it that they forced him to back off his theories even though he still kept working on this machine and in his journals they excised the journals and the only copy of the chapters on life units and reincarnation and panspermia and U.F.O.'s and extra terrestrials all those chapters only turned up in a French translation of the journal from the 1930 s. And then that was retranslated back into English and that's what I found while I was there any similar sort of reaction from the Tesla loyalists I think that the Tesla folks would be more open to this and in the in the book you have a quote from Tesla's journals where you say he wrote physics extends beyond what is scientifically known today the future will show what we now call a cult of the supernatural is based on the science not yet developed That's exactly right. Instead of a blow back to Tesla the only blow back to Tesla believe it or not came from the United States government that we can talk about later but it was the us government that was really on top of Tesla toward the end of his life but in terms of his ic and also when he was building his radio towers at a like offline and at one clip Long Island which the army took down because they believed that the Germans would use it for a homing signal when if they invaded the United States all the at the end of Long Island in Montauk during World War One in fact German submarines landed spies on the edge of Long Island during World War One they were eventually picked up by us counter-intelligence and by the f.b.i. But no edits Tesla Tesla's followers were actually spying on Edison's work Edison had spies in Tesla's laboratory test I had spies in Edison's laboratory and keeping track of each other's progress even though dear feel Rees about the spirit phone were totally different I'll tell you what why don't we have you do a recap on these 2 guys a thumbnail sketch of who they were the giants they were what we owed to them and then we'll get into a little bit later why the rivalry developed sure Edison was. 1st though his family came from Canada in fact they were no offense but they were illegal immigrants and they came from Canada in the in the 1900 in the earlier 19th century Edison was born in the 18th $847.00 I believe and they originally moved to me land to meall in Ohio it's spelled Milan it's pronounced Milan but it's spelled like Malana Ohio and that was a town that grew up because of the canal system the canal system that connected the northern part of the United States with the Great Lakes and Canada but when the railroads came through they started to come through in the 850 s. When the railroads started coming through the canal towns started to die and so Edison's family moved to Port Huron Michigan which is where he spent his early childhood and he began his experiments Edison today in school would have been tempted by teachers as having attention deficit disorder he was restless he was ansi he was never satisfied he confided to his mother that he found school totally boring finally when one of his teachers was so fed up with she called Edison a distracted child she was so fed up his mother became so fed up with what the teacher said that she yanked young Thomas Edison out of school and begin homeschooling him so he's a product of homeschooling and because he was so fascinated by science Edison's mother built him a chemistry laboratory in his basement and so for the 1st 2 years of his life of his young adult life. He was a chemist his life changed one day when he spotted a young child playing on a railroad crossing in Port Huron and down the track there was a train coming the child didn't see the train and the child was so small that the engineer on the train didn't see the child Edison It just was there and just in a moment of bravery he rushed the track picked up the child jumped across the chest a track and the engine roared by and he saved the child's life the child's father as it turned out happened to be the station telegraph operator for that particular one of the Port Huron to Detroit railroad and the station master said I'd love to reward you I know your father owns a local lumber store and building supply store I'm not a rich man and so Edison said to him he said all I want from you sir is to teach me Morse Code teach me code and how to use the telegraph and so the station telegraph operator the station to let refer made Edison his apprentice and taught him how to use the telegraph total code Morse code and that was Edison's 1st job on the road as a Morse Code operator and that was a job he had during the Civil War and. It was true that that he began his 1st inventions for the duplex Telegraph which enabled somebody to do like and it's like an e-mail blast where you could send a message to multiple Telegraph units at a time and then he learned how to take apart the Telegraph learn what made a tech and that turned into his actual 1st invention which he got money the gold stock ticker. And that became medicines 1st patented invention Well his the 1st one that made money the 1st invention that made money was an automatic voting machine but the politicians in New York City didn't want to buy the automatic voting machine because how could you why would you buy a voting machine when the revotes you when you're a ballot box you couldn't stuff and told Edison So that was why that machine failed that was a huge really important lesson for him as you as you explore in the book you say it was something that he never forgot that he'd better find. Inventions that have a built in market and that that one revelation that came to Edison was the beginning for the invention of the development of the consumer market Edison realized that if you invent something to think could be great but but if nobody has a use for what's the purpose so that's why from vat moment forward what Edison did was he figured out a market figured out what it invented could supply something in that market and then created the invention for that market and that's what made him so successful Tesla was in a way he was opposite. I'll tell you what Bill we're going to take a break the music is telling us we're going into a break now we come back on the other side we'll hear about Tesla and about how baby he became a rival bitter rival with Edison. Bill Burns before we move on to Tesla can you give us a little laundry list about Thomas Edison's major accomplishments I mean people think about him in a think of the light bulb which as you point out in the book it wasn't really his invention but it is something he perfected so it could be a consumer product and he did that with a lot of other things that have profound changes in in the world Thomas Edison is I would say and this is my opinion but Thomas Edison not only invented the so we major industries of the 20th and 21st centuries what do you also invented our modern economy here's what I mean he invented. He perfected the telephone we know that Alexander Graham Bell invented a telephone but what Edison did was he replaced the he put what he called the carbon transmitter a carbon disk inside grains telephone so it could carry the voice further when Graeme 1st invented the telephone great idea but you had to shout into it to get the voice to go to the next room. Edison did was he invented a vibrating carbon transmitter that converted the sound waves from your voice into vibrations and it was the vibrations that were carried along the phone lines so he perfected the telephone he also invented the projection device for motion pictures he invented the Vita scope which basically you kind of looked inside and you saw a moving images like a flipbook But what Edison did was after the brothers in France develop motion pictures which he did was he invented the projector with sprockets on it but basically allowed the light to be projected onto a screen so he basically invented the motion picture industry so he invented the telephone industry he invented the motion picture industry and invented the recording industry he 1st began by having a cylinder a wax cylinder not a platter but a wax cylinder. Record the vibrations by making grooves in a cylinder a needle made grooves in a cylinder and then that could be played back then he replaced that with a tin foil cylinder and that was soon replaced with a wax platter. So 3 major industries the recording industry the motion picture industry which also morphed into the television industry and the telecommunications industry all 3 Industries wrapped up in today's Smart Phone and computers so Edison literally invented in discrete pieces what's what now we call the information appliance that led you here and he also developed the platform for pursuing these kinds of invention a whole development yet saw a lab what he did and by inventing all of these devices the one thing she didn't even see and he made a lot more inventions but what he did was he took techno and this I think is the biggest thing he took a type of technology that would only be affordable by the very very rich and he brought that into the middle classes and the working classes so Edison in literally invented the modern consumer based economy the modern consumer goods based market economy that to me was his biggest achievement because given all the devices we have that economy is what's driving us today that's what Edison did. So he has a base Menlo Park a lot of employees he is sort of a covetous guy he doesn't like to share credit and royalties so even though he has really bright people working for him coming up with ideas he takes a credit for it and as a consequence his reputation grows people all over the world who are smart want to work for me and one of those is Nikola Tesla give us the thumbnail sketch of Tesla . To Tesla was younger than Addison and he was born in. He is Croatian Serbian and he was his father was. He was a member of the clergy and from the time he was a little kid Tesla had this one kind of gift he had the ability to imagine something in such incredible detail quote a device called a machine and such incredible detail that he could sketch plans for that device from his own imagination he studied in Prague he studied in Paris and he was a follower of Thomas Edison he believed Edison was the greatest inventor of the 19th and early 20th so while the 19th century and it was his goal to work with Addison and test it was theory was he knew that Edison was experimenting with this thing called Direct Current basically you're generating current through an electric motor and you propel that current along a supply line but direct current had this one problem it was very weak and it had to be boosted and amplified with relay station after relay station and even the biggest power plants couldn't generate electric current for more than a mile he was tennis and he was Tesla's theory. When you use analogies if you're walking on a flat surface flat pavement you're going to expend a certain amount of energy you'll get to your destination but if you have to walk up a hill you're going to exert more and more energy the higher you get up the hill because it's going to take more and more effort more and more power. Potential for you to get up that hill so here was Tesla's theory if instead of just having a single generating current What if you were able to move that current What if we were able to move that magnet from a positive poles when negative pull back to a positive pole back to a negative pole which with each swing of a pole you're generating more and more potential more and more power and that power would drive that current further along the line and of course it would have a much higher voltage that was Tesla steering and Tesla believed that it could show that theory to Thomas Edison show how it works and isn't would immediately jump on to that theory and develop what Tesla called also an aging current Tesla was using direct current I mean Edison was using direct current and Tesla believed that his theory of alternating current would be more efficient to use in let's just say municipal power systems well Edison in addition to everything else Edison did he was a stubborn individual who we're only changed his mind once he fixated on something that was it so here comes Tesla coming to America to work for to work for Edison he gets a job he gets a letter of recommendation and isn't immediately hires him and Tesla begins hitting on him to basically say let's talk about alternating current Edison thing what I want to talk about alternating current I have my power plant down on Pearl Street it's generating power it's generating power in New York City I have a I have a very great laboratory Why would I change everything just for you so one day. And Tesla by the way was getting very frustrated one day Edison knowing that Tesla was an engineering genius said to him Look we have a problem with this one generator downtown I want you to go downtown and I want you to fix this generator and it's got to be up and working over the weekend and here's what I'm going to do I'm going to have a check and I'm going to wait you fill in all the zeros if you successfully fix this generator Well Tesla was not a man of great needs and he was thrilled he works 48 hours straight over the weekend fixing the generator he shows up to Edison's lab and says Mr Edison I I fixed the generator. Where's the check so I can add my zeros and Medicine says a Tesla you really believe what I said you know that gullible that you believe didn't know already that was a joke. Well Tesla was so angry he was not a man to be trifled with that he storms out and he quits and that began this deep seated hatred between the 2 men and of course it it manifested itself in many ways over the the years eventually test was a power preferred power source AC. One out over d.c. In between there were a lot of skirmishes and as you mention spying Well let me look for something that the vet their rivalry became so 9 tenths this is this is 12 the end of the 19th century it became so intense that at the height of that rivalry Edison sought to prove that Tesla is theory of alternating current was life threatening it was dangerous now Edison had already invented the transformer which stepped down the power from the supply lines and individual homes so Edison's argument was a false argument I mean if you went and touched a big power supply line you'd be sourced but my transformer steps down the voltage 210 volts. That's what keeps the voltage safe in a home but what Edison did use what he did various areas. Edison went to New York State and said Is there any prisoner in prison that is going to be executed and they said you know we have this one guy this murderous guy Kamler he killed these people we're going to hang a medicine don't hang him I want you to wait I have a new method of execution so he hires somebody to build an electric chair Meanwhile George Westinghouse had invested in Tesla's alternating current and he was trying to fight Edison. Over using an electric chair as an execution method and but Edison prevailed he convinced the New York State Commissioner of prisons that they should build an electric chair which he did and they were going to use alternating current to execute the prisoner and this could have been a scene out of the movie The Green Mile So they dragged this guy's poor guy camera and he's sitting in the chair they stick the hat on the plug in the electrodes and this is pure alternating current and they throw the switches. And sure the guy convulses he smokes people can smell burning flesh but he doesn't die it's torture they do it again finally his heart stops well the newspapers the New York newspapers were so appalled at this method of execution that they said that this prisoner was Westinghouse and that was enough to drive Kristen house away from the Nikola Tesla that's how awful the rivalry became Tesla got him back because in the 893 Chicago World's Fair. Both Tesla and Edison presented plans for lighting the World's Fair Edison came in thinking nobody's going to beat me I've got my General Electric plans they came in with one good for well over a $1000000.00 in the book let me let me move forward in the book you make the point that Edison scoffed at paranormal psychic phenomena seances mediums that sort of thing that he was very down on that stuff which of course you know the people who don't want this part of his history to be true would say look he would never go for something like a spirit phone whereas I see my Tesla would be much more open to that because as you describe he gets these big bursts of inspiration almost like a telepathic message from somewhere when he has these inventions I just kind of appear in his brain he seemed to be much more open to what we would call paranormal experience like he believed in ghosts he believed in extra terrestrials he believed in a whole world of spirits and he believed that he would wake up with ideas and he actually believed that there were entities that visited him at night and put thoughts into his mind so the 2 men in terms of the paranormal were very very different except Edison did have an interest in this stuff yes he did but see here's the difference . And they both wound up in sort of the same place Edison believed that there was a science to the paranormal he believed that the paranormal wasn't really power that it was normal we just hadn't discovered the science yet and that's what he was about to do Tesla believed that the entire universe was composed of waves sound waves and like the old Superman comics if you could only travel out far enough and hit the right frequency you would hear the voices of the dead Edison believed in electrons and quantum physics and atomic structures both men believed there was a scientific approach to understanding the paranormal I think in the book you say that at Tesla started picking up signals at some point that he thought was from people on the other side that's exactly right Tesla was experimenting with with all the strange radio frequencies he believed in and in fact before we go there was this fascinating u.f.o. Hoax that was based on Tesla's theories that just came out earlier this year with the with the fake m.j. 12 papers oh yeah about the crash in San Agustin so. Tesla believed. That he could get voices of extra terrestrials he could if he could only find the right frequency and send the right frequency out he could actually speak to people on other planets he fully believe in extra terrestrials that was one of his that was one of his theories and he believed that with the right radio frequency which we have today with SETI with the right radio frequency you could pick up signals from other civilizations. In the next segment on the other side will get into Edison's pursuit what he was trying to develop the mechanism of the spiritual but with Tesla though he was picking up signals and voices unintentionally and I it's not clear whether he was he thought they were extraterrestrials or whether it was he thought they might be dead people well that's true I mean part of what Tesla theorized was that the voices of dead people were simply another frequency only had to do was find that frequency so you might say that today's ghost hunters using e.v.p. Were basing it on Tesla spirit that the spirit world is communicating with us we just don't have a mechanism for that communication any indication that Edison became interested in this in this pursuing this because he learned that Tesla might be doing it actually my theory is no the answer is No I don't think so when I think what's prompting Edison was what we said earlier that Edison always believed that he would invent an invention to come into a certain market to satisfy a certain market since Edison's theories about pinging the a lot of the life units of the dead. Came into existence after World War One I think that the market that Edison's. Right before 920 saying 1918 ish was a market of the received people were I mean World War one was so traumatic to Western civilization of just from Europe right through the United States and Canada that Edison really believed that if he could invent a device that would actually signal the presence of the departed spirit he could sell that device he could sell that device and just keep on selling it because everybody would want to talk to the dead it would be the greatest consumer device that's what drove Edison Well I I have to agree with him that would be one heck of a bestseller When we come back we'll talk with Bill Burns further about his book as and versus Tesla get into what the vice Edison tried to develop and then take on some of the criticism that Edison might have just been pranking everyone when he talked about the stuff in multiple interviews Bill Burns say is my guest tonight that we'll be right back and going into the break we have Electric Light Orchestra strange magic.
