Ok Well most Seattle calle ammo a program was much at all except I want to hear all the awards. Live from Chinooks at Fisherman's terminal in Seattle it's the Husky basketball coach your chance to hear from University of Washington head basketball coach is my Coppins and Joe De Witt on the Washington I am G.'s sports network the Husky basketball coaches show is presented by Star Reynolds preferred supplier to the Wes best contractors now here's Tony Castor co. Happy 2019 everybody and welcome to. Have in Seattle's fisherman's terminal for our 1st show of the calendar year so glad you could be with us we've got some diehard fans here some of whom were in southern California yesterday for the Rose Bowl but we had Cal State Fullerton up at Alaska Airlines Arena yesterday for New Year's Day basketball game against my Coppins husk. These and the dogs got the job done came back from a double digit deficit to get the win we'll talk to coach up at the bottom of the hour about his squad getting ready to open up Pac 12 play against Washington State on Saturday the women's team open a Pac 12 play gets Washington State as well come back but it fell little bit short at the end of the game Jody when at least Woodward will talk about the women's team off to a 7 at 6 start we continue with the husky best book coach's show live from should notes in just a moment on the Washington i.m.g. Sports Network. Fans want to create probably Parker Washington across. The profile of assists in the bill will feature and cannot prevent collisions always monitor traffic conditions keep both hands on the steering wheel see owner's manual for safety information frequent news updates 247 in-depth coverage when you want to know more. They will get everybody to the Jodi when she always what where we are so glad to be with you here from Chinooks at Fisherman's terminal happy new years everybody I know is a basketball coach is a moment soon you probably didn't make it to midnight on New Year's Eve actually I was in bed by 1030. Well then you got the celebrated on the New York the East Coast time I write to you that no I did sleep the night before at all so I had to make up for it yesterday or know why but I just kind of about. Well let's start there yeah but you start of Pac 12 play in the house you have his basketball team 7 and 6 they drop their 1st game at the conference season 79 to 76 and it was one of those coach that you drop down early in this one up by 16 points and then crawled your way about. Even had a chance to take the leave late in the 2nd half of this one but you know falling by 3 points to Washington State and in the 1st half just for me Boris her stove just got absolutely red hot at 22 points in the 1st half you lost her in transition a couple times she had some huge buckets Let's start there how kind of a game when you were watching her really get cooking and know when you had to slow down the other side when your team I thought she had an easy opportunity after an easy opportunity I did some think we had any attention to detail or focus I don't know where it was defensively and she got go and she got her confidence going into just sort of the rest of the game you know and she made big shot after pic shot in the 2nd half I thought a hand was in her face a couple of those series and some of them were deep but the amount of lay ups and easy baskets that they had the fact that they won every 5050 ball they just out hustled us for when you're dealing with that with your team and I know how that's what you pride yourself on is the difference Avandia it now to people and forcing turnovers and doing all that when your team doesn't have that fire what how do you as a coach is like a boss Ok where your guys are doing what they need to your women are doing and how what's your approach with this group of women to try to get them out because we've seen it before they've had slow starts and you've been able to jumpstart them right I thought we came back better in the 2nd half here to a few words at half time but I think that you know it's tough because we want our defense took not are often seen unfortunately when we're not scoring the ball well often simply to start the game it just kind of hurts our defense and we just need that flip so bad and you know we might shake things up the next game but you know we tried some different things and I just we just weren't there you know I thought when we went to our 122 zone I thought we slowed him down a little bit I thought Darcy reset a nice job inside and I thought Jenna Mosher had a pretty good game but I just think overall we just didn't have the defensive intensity the effort the focus the house. So the heart that we hang our hearts on every single game just wasn't there what do you tell your team at halftime now we're going to play a lot harder ladies. Just like values. Exactly just like I'm sure that's what is going to which player is the one that will try to light the fire. With the team. So I think Amber does it times I just think sometimes she gets you know caught into her own off and said game I think Hannah tries and Jenna certainly tries as well. I think Missy definitely has a capability of doing so. So you know really it's just a collective effort by all of them they all play they all matter and. You know it only takes one on the defensive side of the ball to be watching or standing around or not boxing out and it just hurts the entire unit whereas on office if you just have one kid that does stands around you can kind of play through them sometimes you just can't do that defensively but the really cool thing Darcy Reese coming over here for the 1st time as a freshman I think all of us can maybe relate when you left home for the 1st time and whether you're a couple hours away 10 minutes away or 17 hours on a plane away as Star series says the native of Australia you can have some times when you're homesick and Mom and Dad were able to come and watch her play for the 1st time in her husky career made it over for the Washington State game and she ends up having a career high in both points and in rebounds which for her amazing game 15 points she had 8 rebounds she was an even 7 of 14 from the field and she must have really gotten some interview from her mom and dad in the stands what was that like her to talk to about that all the talk her folks when they arrived yeah I mean I thought it was just pretty special they're here. For almost 3 weeks they're going to see 7 games so in. Well mom dad and her 2 sisters and brother are here so it's just kind of a special thing for her family to be out here is the 1st time that they've been out here and. You know that her dad came out on her official visit last year with Darcy but for the whole family to come out with it is pretty special to see her place here competed that certainly gave Darcy a lot of energy and I know her parents are certainly proud and her parents not only are proud but they also have some pretty good genes they handed down to her both her mom and dad played professional basketball in Australia her dad was a member of the Australian national team Yes and you could tell right away when they walked in I'm like Wow there's that there's a reason why their daughter is 6 foot 4 there's they're pretty tall but they have a look like hoopers. Knowing her background when you were recruiting her how much did you really like talk ball with her mom and dad a lot with her dad you know he learned a lot of his stories about professional basketball back in Australia who he played with and include played against in some of the familiar names and stuff not so much with mom I think it was more quiet about that but you know we just kind of knew that there was he was going to develop over time and what she got your around coaching and got stronger in the weight room and you know Darcy wanted to play professionally wants to play professional basketball and it's all said and done and she gets her degree she wants to teach and play professional basketball and you know you you want to coach players that want to keep playing after their collegiate careers are over because that means they're going to continue to focus on getting better every single year for you well in one thing it with all freshmen as you kind of learn their game and learn their strengths and weaknesses as you go you have an indication from watching film and doing your research but in so you see them plain especially for a center right Intel you see them playing against other 6364 players I would imagine to be horrid to really kind of figure out what they'll be able to do at this level and when you want to feed them where you want to get in the ball what can you rely on them for. Or what have you discovered about Garcia not process of her freshman season yeah I think you know needing space is important for her you know she doesn't really nice job of being able to turn over either shoulder equally a lot of young post players can only turn over one shoulder. What I think is just really exceptional for her as she can score with her right hand on her left hand she's got a quick an opera feet so she get off the ground a little quicker make her make her route reads a lot little bit faster but overall I think when she's in I want to one situation arise elation situation she's you know chances are she's going to either get fouled or she's in a sport about that so her parents are over here for 3 weeks it's summer time out in Australia but you know they're out of school and they're going to drive down no Oregon for this weekend's games and then come back up for you Colorado Utah swing and then they're going to finish down at Stanford and Cal and then fly up from there is amazing isn't that also it's really cool so I'm wondering certainly they're not fit in the dorm room with our snow r.c. Going to go there and stay like at the hotel or they were out in like have a place with a kitchen and and so Darcy was pretty excited to be able to cook and you know to have something home cooked I think her mom went to the grocery store and they cooked and cooked a meal and she was just really excited because she was going to be able to get a phone it's like my parents are here the 1st thing I'm going to do is get a phone or she's going to make a buyer has it's their current Christmas present I thought oh there you go see that that's always nice even when you're away at school as a freshman you still have your parents around you mention heading down to Oregon and it in my opinion is the toughest road swing not just here in the Pac 12 could be the toughest road swing in the nation you have 2 teams that not only are really talented but they also have a home court advantage it's really strong we're talk about going down to the Willamette Valley making that swing for the 1st road trip of the conference season and we'll do that coming up next what you do when. Welcome back in Chinooks is where we do the coach's show Jodi went along with Elise what we are glad to have you with us here Happy new year everybody and happy holidays just myself came got from the Rose Bowl late last night with the team and man what a season it isn't in the way we wanted to but a great comeback for the fellows yesterday down in the Rose Bowl that your team get together to watch the Rose Bowl or did you just kind of scatter and have a really relax on New Year's Day How that work I think some some of our girls had family members in town and they just wanted to spend some time with some of their family before school starts back up on the 7th and so we just kind of we have practice in the morning we have some film session and then we kind of just let it be and have that have their it's a day off well it was Huskies coming up short there I know you guys came up short against Washington state by 3 points 79 to 76 and we'll switch gears and talk about Oregon but I want to get your thoughts in her effort certainly scoring the ball should not go unnoticed in that game I know Borisov her stove at the store for the star for Washington State and it up with 38 points but every ball goes I had some really nice moments and at times carried the off and she finished with 27 points you with 79 for the line. Was it 9 to 21 from the field and it's a pretty amazing thing when you look for her she has been in double figures scoring in 24 of the last 25 games the only game that she's not been in double figures was against Mississippi State when she was banged up start the 2nd half and then couldn't go when you guys were down and ended up with 3 points in that game other than that she's been in double figures in 24 of the last 20 or viable games and the consistency there of a player that is clearly marked because she. Isn't near 20 points a game and you don't have anybody else averaging over I think a leavened with Missy Peterson So you know she's getting everybody's best shot How has she been. To consistently do this tough toughness she does has this competitive drive about her that she honestly believes that she can score on anybody at any time you know and that's her work ethic and just be an alter competitor you know she she strong she has the ability to get to the free throw line and I think every great score can get to the free throw line and that's something that she does really well it was good to see Jenna Moser especially the 2nd half she had some big 3 balls got go in. And for her it's desperately needed you need to get her out there and you had her some space and get her some shots because she is so consistent with a 3 point line she shot it well last year how she should get over 40 percent from deep this year what was she able to do to kind of get in a rhythm and get going to get some open looks yes yes or no Nuffield will attempt to see her and it's just kind of a shame in my opinion and you know I think making a concentrated effort to get her openness is certainly important for us setting pin screens for her and setting a back scanner downstream for whatever it is but you know she was able to get her feet set when she gets her feet said she's on balance she's pretty good from downtown and yeah you know I just thought that she did a really nice job she had a really good 4 game I thought for us and. She got herself and the paint she scored in the paint she got some steals and I thought she overall she played a really good game and hopefully she can build on that one of the things you talk about getting her more 3 point looks Washington state made a Levon 3 s Yeah and Washington made 6 in a 3 point game yeah it was one of those that you look back and there's a lot of things you can probably look out by you shot 39 percent percent from the field was you shop 50 percent from the field so it's one of those things a couple areas are does that jump out to you more about that game of things that you are like Ok this is an area where we can improve this I'm going to do it or what is it as a coach when you look back and there's the emotion of a game is the box score of the game then there's a call back and watching film from the game and you get. True indicator of like this is where we can clean it up and this is where we can make the most improvements What do you think after that 1st game Coach Well you know you can always control the ball going through the ramp you know through the net so I do think that you know yeah we missed some shots we missed some shots we missed some key shots we missed some land I think we need to to convert but the biggest thing for us is our defensive intensity and our defensive effort I mean I think that they won the hustle points so when they hit the 50 balls they got easy lay ups we did some silly things silly rotations that justs so are something that just we does shake our heads in like what happened why did we do that something that you know we don't nor we don't ever do We don't ever teach It's rare that somebody would rotate that way or not rotate that way and. You know I just don't know where our focus was defensively in our discipline to get stops and I think overall that to me is the number one glaring marker after that game is. You know we fought back hard you know I think a couple times out of 4 points which are a 5 points which you know we miss a come down hit or we turn it over they come down and hit they know that hurt is that the end of the game but I do think that we should have been in that situation had we had any focus and attention to detail on the defensive side of the ball well it doesn't get any easier that is for certain because you go on the road for the 1st time in a month you've been able to be home after a non-conference schedule that saw you go down to New Orleans and then down to the East Coast and now you start off maybe as one of those it's good to get the most difficult thing out of the how to go have a sure I like and sit back and final exams when your heart is classier like stuck right away with the you were the hardest one but at Oregon but if any impact on champs they won the Pac 12 tournament they're ranked in the top 5 in America there are 3 in the r.p.i. And you face them at Oregon it is 6 o'clock on Friday night the one thing about them. Is that I think for your program is 5 years ago that program was not having success and I had heard of Sabrina and Reno certainly helps but they have been in a in an upward trajectory now for the past 345 seasons and now they're one of the best teams in America after 5 years ago not being on the map at all where how do you recruiting Sabrina that be nice you know you get some of those that I've been told and you'll be doing a good job even if it's not a secret it is one of those words you look at Stanford they've been so good for so long they have a Hall of Fame coach that's one of the best coaches period in any sport men or women professional tar band of years amazing. If you look at other programs then you're like Ok this is kind of came out of nowhere but we're going to come out of nowhere Washington's had good success and ask about what impresses you the most and what do you take a wave from well how Oregon got to where they are this season well it's about giving kids a pitcher culture you know and Kelly has done a great job of. Acting high level talent Sabrina as one of the best part of the country coming out of high school and. He was able to secure her over a lot of great programs throughout America and that was that was huge but also the collection around her you know as you know the best player in Europe came over the best you know and then Ruthie here you know those post players from Alaska that came down and who knew she was going to be shooting 74 percent for the field you know that's just remarkable but you know I thought I thought he's done and you know nice job of getting high level recruits but also ones that play team basketball they pass a ball really really well they play together you know Sabrina is a star Absolutely but those other players you know and what she does you know to move the ball and get other players involved in just they play unselfish basketball and everybody has a little bit of worth I was looking at some of the stats the thing that jumps out to me in terms of passing the balls to Bernie and ask you and my. Take a poll top 5 in America and insist the turnover ratio in their whole team is $2.00 to $1.00 that's unpleasant Tiva bull but you don't I would bet you there aren't 20 point guards in America that have a 2 to one Is this the ratio I mean that's a that's a really good assisted turnover ratio or 2 to one as a team though only so it's not just the city saying so yeah she's she's got $129.00 assists already on the year I think and you know she just has incredible vision and obviously got to score the ball you know she can just she can pass if it's got put in for right for her to get the assist and you know she's got players around her that certainly could do that how have you seen her how can you disrupt their rhythm . Well I think that you know we're going to shake things up and mix them up a little bit defensively and try to keep them off balance and not just play you know one defense where they can get comfortable I think they're very very good at the pick and roll basketball and so for us to kind of mix things up defensively and try to keep them a little bit off balance on how we're guarding certain things can help. You know and then for us we got to take care of the ball number want to get a pitch shot every time down we got to score the ball because you know they scored at such high efficiency. You know I don't know if we're ever going to really stop them stop them but we've got to mix it up and keep them a little bit off balance and we've got to score the ball ourselves it is Jodi when it is the coach's show they'll be at Oregon on Friday night at 6 o'clock at Matthew night or arena and then they'll turn around and head up Highway 99 to Corvallis to face off against Oregon State 2 o'clock on Sunday and will get a word about them they got a brand new point guard down there that's not too bad herself will talk about that Jody when coming up the Huskies head down dilemma Valley for 2 games on the road this weekend will be back right after this in the Washington i.m.g. Things Como news 1097 so. That is the Judy when show at least we're with you we are action eczema glad to have you with us the Huskies head on the road for the 1st road swing of the Pac 12 season and probably the most difficult one at Oregon Friday night at 6 o'clock in the night at Oregon State 2 teams both ranked in the top a level one in the nation an Oregon State team that was in the Elite 8 a year ago when they might be better destiny Slocum a player that at one time was Committee averse to Washington went to Maryland was the rookie of the year at the University of Maryland out of the state of Idaho originally and then transferred to Oregon State set out a year ago and now she's leading the charge for the Beavers and they're pretty solid at last Marie Gooch but I got just about everybody back and can really shoot the basketball and it's a tough place to play a scene. Do a really fabulous job of packing up plays saying what have you seen at Oregon State this year that impresses you I think they're 3rd in the country and shoot in threes you know they right now they are going small ball so they've got some 68 players on their roster I think 3 of them are 6869 but they're starting a little bit smaller so they're more mobile they move the ball really really well for are 5 players at all times shoot to 3 for them and you know destiny is out of a different dimension for them what is it when you look at what your team what you want what you're going to preach to them you're going in your big underdogs this week and there's no doubt everybody in the Pac 12 will go into Oregon in Oregon State as an underdog probably even Stanford who was picked to finish 2nd but on the road at these 2 environments they don't go. Oh that's right you know sure they miss a part of the Pac 12 Conference So yeah Origen and I know what what do you tell your team but how to approach this weekend knowing you're going to to really difficult environments of what you're going to try to accomplish that we have absolutely nothing to lose and everything to gain right now we're worried about our own self and set of thinking about how great Oregon is or how awesome Oregon State is right now we're thinking about our program right now and we're thinking about how we can get better by the next time we take the court because you know we left awful taste in our mouth the other night and you know we've got to. We've got to be more in tune to what we do do it well and. And then take the court with the effort and the focus and the intensity that we need to have and we certainly have to have a game in a game out of 4 going to pull off some upsets Well that's what the Us keys will try to do this Friday they'll get their crack at Oregon a rank number 3 in the r.p.i. Welcome back to. Seattle's fisherman's terminal Tony Castor called Mike Hopkins with you as we continue on with a Husky basketball coaches show and happy new year coach Happy 2019 ASIO year 2005 years ago be the best year yet heck yeah we've got a 9 informant's basketball team get ready to open up Pac 12 Conference play and and now you've got the preseason behind you now you you look forward to the conference season and this is where you take on the teams that are the rivals he got the deep roots you got the deep from the year 80 this is when I really love college basketball taking it to the next level yeah you know it's it's really exciting and we know we played a challenge in our conference schedule didn't have as many wins as we wanted to but we played some really top games we had some really played a lot of. Good basketball and hopefully that schedule helps us going into what you talked about the Pac 12 Conference which I think is wide open right out of the. League but I think if we play well we can win Well let's talk about yesterday's game you did get to play on New Year's Day and you took on Cal State Fullerton it was your last non-conference game and looked a little shaky for a while from following a from a shaky laughing. At all hours of a that was there the figures of it all worked out all right Twitter figure of 13 point deficit turns into an 8 point win a huge 2nd half spurt by your team Yeah you know what we came out our you know we just couldn't make shots earlier energy levels weren't where we needed to be callous to afford to do a good job they were aggressive all Fed simply it is 2nd half you know down 13 with 15 minutes to go we called a timeout and it just turned into a different team we we defend it we play with energy we rebound we ran we got easy baskets we scored inside and. It was in the 40 minutes but it was 15 and we were able to come out with a victory not where we wanted to but a bit tired game but for guys found a way away well you had 6 guys in double figures only played 7 in this game I think it is is coming off a little bit ankle thing. But all things considered this game just kind of looked a little bit different from some of the other ones that we had sprained his ankle the day before and I really wanted to give dolphin opportunity to start play you know he's such a difference maker when he's making shots because you know 3 point shooting threat . And you know short the pitch just sometimes you know I coach with my gut you know and you know we found a way but it all goes back to energy you know whatever it does matter what defense your play what off that you play for not playing with energy and you're not playing together it doesn't matter what else you do and we just had to kind of get a big play hard and they took a 25. Yeah but we found a way to but eventually that energy came in you know one of the things that we've seen happen all year as asthma t. Stubble can tease to get more and more attention for his ability to pick pockets and steal and he keeps moving up those Pac 12 charts higher and higher in the career numbers sometimes he takes a few extra chances he picks up a few extra fouls and from what I could tell from yesterday's game Nas Carter once Mathias picked up his 4th he kind of came in and looked like he played really really well in his back you all even early in the 1st half David got 2 files early there was one questionable call but he got the 2 a dogs came in and gave us a huge boost off the bat she scored he defended he's been a great energy guys are playing at a very high confidence level right now and obviously gave us a post at the top of the $23.00 zone defensively Sometimes he looks like a t.c. The way he'll read a pass and he's got that length and everything else is he learned a lot from number 4 in how to play defense no question and now is a year and a half into our defense and watching the Ts great role model of that when he tries to steal everything but he you know when you're Spider-Man you can write yeah you anything right you could stop it will be a bus I would have. Such a difference maker and you know the guys have just all bad it was you know study and understand the angles understand reading the other officer players where they're really trying to attack and dogs when it's you know what David obviously got to tell trouble last night when you get those 2 guys up there it's you know you're 6767 with 7 foot wingspan says pretty hard to score yeah you finish with 10 points not as Carter did and it seems like sometimes he'll come into the game and he'll have a very aggressive attitude like he wants to get to the right he wants to score and it seems like sometimes that can help jumpstart things often simply too I think so you know. I always say he's in attack at all times and that's what makes him great and he thinks is the best part of the for whatever he plays that's what also makes some great. You know and he just you know. You just need to play you know it's the game you can't already have intentions you just gotta play the game as hard as you can you saw what we played Virginia Tech me at night rebounds he is an energy guy he makes energy plays he can tip duck he can get transition he came over a block to shot herself in a different ways that he could change a game and he's been a huge boost for us off the bench and all the scoring but defensively know it Dickerson with another double double I think the 18th of his career continues to be impressive in the double doubles that you can gather 16 points 12 rebounds and just a guy that as we get ready to move into Pac 12 play more double doubles we get from Noah and that helps that production down low obviously he's he's been our go to guy the last couple years and a guy that when he's on he's as good as it gets and you know obvious at the begin of the year and injuries had some you know kind of a roller coaster days but even like if you look at the stats he had 10 fouls drawn against him but he's just impossible to guard against us in the bonus early he gets the ball he made 3 great passes last night the 2nd half to get us stories and you know he's just one of those guys that you know for creates a double take There's very few people planet Earth that can create a double take and as one of them know Dickerson is 4th in the country in fouls drawn for 40 minutes he sees a guy that he's just a problem inside it's hard to read for rehab because he's obviously get great position it opens up you know what 2 guys are guard what you're playing for a good story and you know we can still probably give the ball more especially when he's passing the way that he's passing especially in the 2nd half just peed on selfish picking guys a part of the open mad made a big play for the 3 of the corner of the 2nd half and you know I still think we can get more out of I think he's a great player you know it's funny though that to be top 4 in the country in Fell's drawn performance like I think back Shaq was great it felt drawn right but then you go to the line and claim clay even aches. No Dickerson it was the line he's got that high arching shot and you know I'm somewhat new to the program and I've been around for this is my 2nd year I didn't see him as a freshman but I know the percentage wasn't nearly as high he's put a lot of hard work into getting that line higher chin shot beautiful touch backspin nothing but a sophomore junior year when we 1st got the job has been a huge improvement he really focused on that that allows you to try to go to him every possession not only does he make foul shots you know if he gets filed but he creates that double to have a veto you see like his assistant was a bend down he start to really feel comfortable back there get double teamed up to get a part as he huge huge advantage as we move forward but when you're a big guy you get fouled a lot making shots is critical and he's won multiple games for us to make a foul shot and you know you talk about assists numbers Jaylen the well we've talked about him his numbers distributing the ball have been going in is more seasoned he's doing bad a little bit more maybe the next development in in his office of game no question you know he's he's a he's a born score it's what he what is his d.n.a. God put him on those earth to put the pole. And he's as good as I've ever seen any guard do it. His ability to really change the program and take his game to another level in our team as to make other guys better and I think he's really had a good focus on that really try to Sherry made a couple great passes it or night. You know obviously I think he's one of the best cars in the country he had 6 assists in the win over Cal State Fullerton to go along with his 20 point performance and then David Crisp with the timely 3 I mean he stepped up and hit a big one he finishes in double figures as well with 11 points 2 assists 3 steals for David Chris Yeah Dave is our emotional leader you know we obviously we got down we don't want to be there we don't want to be in that situation which we've been a lot this year but he's the guy who always just seems to make the steel make the rebound make the play make the 3 whatever it may be. To really boost our team you know he's at a boat show a leader for us he always has been always will be great to walk around. Kind of wills his way as the game progresses Well the conference is done now looking ahead to Pac 12 well I will talk a little bit about the conference of champions and what to expect this year as we take a look at how the schedule unfolds and next up it's Washington State Boeing Apple Cup series from Alaska Airlines Arena on Saturday continues at the Washington Ivy Sports Network course like Established in 1978 and born in the Rockies where the Stablished in Seattle Washington we've been brewing fresh and innovative craft beers and 1981 we're from the 2006 and this purple and gold family runs deep so grab a cold pie and let's hear it for those in purple and gold red oak brewery is a proud partner of husky athletics Here's to another season we're tougher together Dubbs up for more info about red hope visit us at red hot dot com or visit us on Capitol Hill and read home brew lab please enjoy red oak responsibly. The 7 said. Welcome back to the Husky basketball coaches show a lot of the Chinook Seattle's fisherman's terminal the salmon is delicious come on out and join us as we talk basketball usually every Monday but you know with the new year and everything else we had to move some things around so we're celebrating it on a Wednesday this week but we'll be back next week on Tuesday and it'll be Monday every week the rest of the basketball season after that so I just want to update you on those housekeeping items husky men's basketball team getting ready to open up Pac 12 Conference play against Washington State and let's talk a little bit about the Pac 12 before we take a real close look at the kooks What have you seen at a Pac 12 conference here so far in the conference got. A couple ranked teams in Oregon and Arizona State in the non conference Yeah you know I think obviously with ball ball being educated with a fit they've had injuries Arizona State beat the number one team in the country they beat Mississippi state Arizona went down to be Connecticut Connecticut played a really tough schedule we played a really tough schedule and so you know obviously we all know what happened to u.c.l.a. Us see it was down to you know Kevin Porter and Charles Opana are 2 big dogs all Americans and so. I look at our league sometimes and you know I've been of the a.c.c. I've been of the Big East during the heyday and we've got a great league with great coaches and great programs a great traditions and I feel like it's under attack a little bit when you go through it it was like the headlight had and it has painted says the Pac 12 has its worst December in the history of whatever as well as the Big East but it's packed well for the right. Way and it's always the way the story is friend and so you know I think our league is really really good if we perform the level that we need to with a non-conference No but you know we played a lot of tough games we try to amp it up in a lot of different ways and I think it's going to be a great league this year yeah well a u.c.l.a. I mean very talented team there in a 4 game losing streak and hate sometimes they decide to make changes or whatever but bottom line is they've still got talent right like it's not like they've got as much talent as the cover of the top 25 season they've got talent they're just young talent sometimes young talent it takes time it's just the way it is you know you win being older you won't be an upperclassman and they've got a lot of talent in our league as a lot of talent Arizona State has you know I thought it was one thing for them to kind of shock everybody last year but now people know about what they can do and they still got some big wins we've got Kansas here on the big screen right now be able to beat this the way they do I mean the Arizona state can play with anybody else they can and they've been very good they've got out to prove it we you know we went out there you know they talk about quad one or whatever quad one of it's a neutral gambits want between one and 50 we played number 7 number 4 and number 10 there's a big difference is the same numbers as if you're played 47 in terms of quad one. But you know that's for a lead to get respect we got to play those games we got to go out we got a well this is the bottom line but it doesn't mean that we don't have a great league we don't have really good teams and I believe that you know Orgon. Full healthy can beat anybody I think that's the same thing with u.s.c. I think has the same thing with u.c.l.a. Arizona was a team that really didn't get a whole lot of respect just because a law says if they had coming into the preseason I think their pick 637th in the league and they look like a team that could compete they want to Maui and did some things and you talk about the road when it gets you come on here they are in a year where they're not expect to be that good but they're 9 in 4 heading into what you're talking about a tradition that's pretty strong as strong as any college basketball program the culture Chavela as good as any coach in the country they got one of the best home courts so they've got a lot of great ingredients there that will always be a tough game and you know I think Horgan States really good I really do I think that's a team that obviously we lost to twice last year and 2 times in overtime but they've you know they've they've played really really well. You know you just you drop a game here there and it can kill you and you know we just got to go out there play well worry about University of Washington hopefully we can play well because I really believe that if we play well we can beat anybody in our league and you know coach it's interesting to me that. Were kind of evolved to this point college basketball there's so much talent I mean you look at the mid majors they all got town you know out there right and yet people are still so shocked when like can't state beats Oregon state by 3 points they say that that's like such a bad loss for some but but the middle conference you know they get in the n.c. Double a term and they win games I mean that's just it surprises me that people are kind of as shocked when like a made major will be to high major seems to have all the title is special like Arizona State losing a president right before Christmas you look at Radford b. Texas there's a lot of teams in this league or in the country the power 5 conferences that have been upset that's just the way it is I mean Boston College was picked pretty high this year and a.c.c. And they've lost 2 or 3 it's just all the Syracuse loss to Oregon it Abhi there's a lot of teams It just seems that they just keep highlighting our league but if you really. Some of these leagues in the lower half there's been a lot of these upsets and you look at our team we beat was to Kentucky right Western Kentucky one at Arkansas they want out West Virginia and they just beat Wisconsin how that think about that they got in 3 major Now I don't know if the net or they had set up like Target is it worse or better to lose it to a team that you should lose to or to beat a team. That you should beat or consider to be right I think it's a really interesting conversation to have because when you look at our schedule we did take care of business against the big majors the low majors it just was a you go on the road you play well was it was 3 teams on the road they were in the top 15 challenge ourselves him and were able to get the wins but you know took care of business in a lot of the other games and so. You know it's always that sort of thing is sports it's so easy to make snap judgments of teams based on a single result I would say that like as soon as you beat anybody well you just beat a team that now has a loss and so you can look at that team is not being as strong because they lost the game so you still won that's the goal is to win the game yeah it again is it goes back to the metrics like we want Last night we went out of the way. So you know listen at the end of the day you know you got to play you know you obviously try to play good teams we try to do what the c.w. Was trying to say we tried to upgrade our schedule played a mammoth a video you play it all burned you come back you go play San Diego Minnesota we lost a last 2nd shot get Zeiger we lost on the last like a shot and Virginia Tech was just just had a bad 1st half so hopefully these experiences help us as we move forward but I'm a firm believer that our league is really good I think there's really good coaches really great programs and you can't judge on just what maybe we did the preseason you look at data Altman's teams they cost they get better you know whatever happened to Ok well now we're better or you know we've got our teabag Stanford last year with now we're better we've got better of a good coach we've we've improved now we're undefeated Well you didn't do a thing of it off but the season get we the season rolls on people get eligible people get healthy teams get better that's that's the one thing that there's not a metric for yeah that's a really good point how do you how do you feel about the way that this whole thing lays out the Pac 12 schedule it seems pretty balanced between. Not on the road too long at home too long for any gigantic stretches starts off with Washington State then you go to the mountains you come back against the Bay Area. Anything stand out to you about the way that actually stands out at all to me other than winning every game that's a gold medal and you know obviously you all schedule look at it you know you play wash and say we always like a practice is what we have to get and what we have to prepare for these teams you know how we have to move because you're playing Thursday or you know Thursday Saturdays and try to purchase prepare and have your team ready and you know there's a lot of challenge in there there's a lot of teams that you know their record might not be good that are pretty good because they're different than what we do and sometimes it's not maybe what the ranking is it's maybe the style of play contrasts but I think there's a lot of great opportunity out there that's the way I look at it and you know we just got to go out there and take one data type take one game at a time and you know hopefully we can go out there and you know be successful yet the Arizona schools you only visit you don't get them at home this year southern California schools will only play here we don't get the return trip to Southern California this year and everybody else we play twice says we're ready to open up Pac 12 Conference play and do it against Washington State will talk about the kooks when we continue the Husky basketball coaches show live from Chinooks in Seattle fisherman's terminal this is the Washington Times the sports network. You know it's going to be one of those games where you know we got to push out the shooters long rebounds and push ourselves Robert Franks had I think a little bit of a hip pointer thing earlier this week in the game at the laws you have any sense as to what to expect with him were expected as planned hey you know this team obviously the teams issued a lot of threes changes our defense a little bit see jail but you should know the ball exceptionally well have been a great freshman season Carter Skaggs Yeah you know haven't bought all the They've they've really really picked up the pace Skaggs we know from last year all these are new junior college player but a team that plays are very very confident and loose off at Savoy we've got to be able to fend off yeah I don't think Skaggs is really interested in shooting inside 20 feet and we deep but I love it because the kid has no fear he's he shoots a lot of confidence and the team has a lot of confidence and what what have you seen in some of these games where they've struggled a little bit yes maybe some of these mid majors is there a chink in the armor somewhere I think a big thing that you know when they played at Seattle you obviously the player Well Robert Frank see him play in a couple of games you know they played San Diego's a really good team they played Mexico state as were very good. Team in the West Coast and you know. This is a team that you know that it's kind of crazy because if they get hot they can beat anybody I remember last year when they were struck one you know when they talk about striking they start off 6 you know that's right St Mary's they were the target they were the what classic Yeah that's Ras year I mean this is a team that you know they beat set of State St Mary St Joseph big type team. You station I am. Now.
