It was apparently used earlier this term in a discussion of slavery in a us history course at dayton high school. And, recently it showed up on the final exam. Brian nelson says he learned of it when he asked his 17 year old son about his final grade. Nelson he said there were some pretty disturbing images on the final that he felt pretty strongly about and he wasnt really sure how to answer them. What was described to me was that the students were supposed to write about what the artist was trying to portray in the image. Nelson comes from a Law Enforcement family. Nelson professional Law Enforcement has been suffering from a tarnished image which has been portrayed by the media and its been increasing over the last several years. Theres a number of reason for that, but this was just another attack on their integrity and it has no place in the classroom. Lyon County School superintendent wayne workman says he only learned about the issue yesterday. He quickly issued an apology which read in part we understand the offensive nature of the image workman would not confirm that the teacherwho had taught at the school since 2013had been fired, citing personnel privacy issues. He did say the district was taking appropriate action. Nelson says all that is up to the school district. He says discussion of slavery is very appropriate in a us history course, but this image is not. Nelson i doubt there are very many people who can draw any meaningful relation between that image and us history or slavery in any way. Much of the reaction to this incident has played out on social media and the fallout continues there. This issue came to light through a local Talk Radio Program armed nevada radio. The host told us acting on complaints from students supporting the teacher, facebook has barred him from access to his own page for 24 hours. Ed, thank you. Anotherer weaker storm may impact the forecast area on saturday before a ridge of High Pressure returns to the region early next week. Short term. Main change to the forecast was to add freezing fog to many valley locations and to issue a freezing fog advisory. Many locations are reporting lowered icy roads. Morning commuters are urged to leave plenty of extra time for travel as roads will be extremely icy and hazardous. Dense freezing fog appears to have consolidated in the vicinity of the reno airport early this morning so if you have a flight be sure to check its status before heading out. Several flights were redirected and due to the dense fog and low visibility. Bulk of the next storm the sierra this morning and then into midday. Spillover doesnt look spectacular with this storm, so we anticipate most of the impacts and precipitation will remain in northeastern california and the sierra locations. The system is also still trending a bit farther south than the previous storm, so heaviest precipitation amounts will likely be south of highway 50 as the storm pushes into the area. Looking at satellite early this morning there is quite a bit of lightning with the storm as it moves into the west coast. If convective activity continues then stronger precipitation bands could move across the sierra resulting in localized snow amounts much higher than currently forecast. Winter weather advisories are in effect for the tahoe basin for this morning and for mono county significant travel impacts will occur. Details are available in the Winter Weather advisory products.
