Fernando im fernando espuelas. Welcome to matter of fact. Donald trump is turning up the attacks on hillary clinton. Mr. Trump you know i call her crooked hillary. Fernando dialing up donors for support, and twisting arms to win the endorsement of Party Leaders who have been holdouts. Its all part of pulling the gop together, and building a National Campaign team. Which raises the question whose advice is he seeking . How much is he listening . Im joined now by doctor ben carson. Dr. Carson, welcome to the program. Dr. Carson thank you. Nice to be with you. Fernando you recently that said that donating to donald trump would be a good investment for the big donors in the republican party. Can you elaborate more . How is this a good investment . Dr. Carson well, in comparison to Bernie Sanders and hillary clinton, who feel like the solutions to everything come from the rich. If we take their money we can solve all the problems. The fact of the matter is, we are in so much trouble right now, not just the national debt, but the fiscal gap. You could take all the money from the rich and you wouldnt even make a dent in it. These are not the solutions we want. We want the Real Solutions that get to the base of the problem. Fernando so, last time we balanced the budget, it was a combination of tax increases and budget cuts, which seems to be the formula for balancing most budgets beyond the federal budget. Is that not the most appropriate path since its been proven to work . Dr. Carson maybe it would have been an appropriate path when taxes were low, but taxes are already high. Responsibility is what we need instead of wasting our money studying the sex life of shrimp and silly stuff like that. No one can sustain that type of silliness. Fernando beyond the silliness, we know the major drivers of the federal budget are entitlements and defense. Those are two areas that, according to mr. Trump who you support and advise, are areas he will keep entitlements as they are and he wants to increase the military. How do you see his budget as a mechanism for creating a balanced economic picture for the United States . Dr. Carson well, recognize that his philosophy on entitlements is as follows. If we fix the economy, reform the tax code, get rid of incessant regulations 81,000 pages of regulations last year you can energize what was the worlds most vibrant economic machine, then are you not going to have anywhere near the pressure on the entitlement programs. You dont deal with that first. You fix the economy first, and you give people real options, then you address the entitlements, that the part that doesnt come through. Fernando so doctor, let me ask you. When that approach was tried in bush administration, in other words, lower taxes and lower regulations, it turned out quite badly as you know, in a bubble. Dr. Carson yeah, because you had ridiculous spending at the time. Unprecedented spending. Fernando right, for wars and dr. Carson youre never going to fix it like that in a situation like that. Fernando but my point is that Economic Growth didnt happen. It was the lowest period of Economic Growth since the Great Depression and the lowest period of job creation. It seems like the standard formula, mathematically, not ideologically, does not work. What is mr. Trump offering that is different economically than what has been tried before . Dr. Carson what is different, is you dont spend like a drunken sailor and you create an environment that encourages entrepreneurial risk taking and capital investment. There are trillions of dollars sitting on the sideline that people arent willing to invest because of the uncertainty and the hostile environment created by bureaucrats who want to do nothing but regulate and control. Fernando there seems is a notable division in the party among the establishment, the grass roots tea party, Trump Supporters and so forth. How do you see this party coming together . Dr. Carson i think the wounds are still fresh. People are sitting there licking their wounds and they are not necessarily thinking in a logical fashion. As those wounds heal and they begin to understand what we were just talking about, this is not the time to be thinking about our own personal feelings and licking our wounds. This is a time to be thinking about what is going to happen to this country and the future. Fernando dr. Carson, thank you very much. Coming up this powerful , republican senator is feeling the down ballot effect of a trumpled ticket. Fernando hes advocated a wall. Is that a policy that you think would work . And what would kunta kinte , say about black lives matter . Levar i think young people need to know that they do not come from slaves. Words of wisdom from the actor who brought roots to life and kicked off americas conversation abo fernando for the gop, its not all about donald trump. Republicans are battling to maintain their modest margin in the senate. One of the most Vulnerable Senate republicans is ron johnson of wisconsin, chairman of the committee on homeland security. A prominent businessman, johnson won his seat 6 years ago by defeating democratic incumbent, russ feingold. Now, the two are locked in a rematch, with the most recent real clear politics poll of polls showing feingold with a 5. 7 lead. I met with johnson to talk about National Security, immigration, and Donald Trumps impact on his reelection bid. Senator, welcome to the program. Sen. Johnson thanks for having me. Fernando let me ask you. Youre in a race for reelection. Polls are early, so they are kind of meaningless right now, it seems your opponent former senator feingold, seems to be in the lead. Sen. Johnson i think its a dead even race. It has been and will continue to be that. Its going to be a really close race. Fernando so how does mr. Trump impact your race . Sen. Johnson im not a political pundit. Really. Im a citizen legislator, my background is in manufacturing and accounting so ill let the punditry to others. My approach has been and will continue to do to do my job. Im chairman of homeland security, a serious responsibility one i take , seriously. So ill continue to do my job and travel tirelessly around the state of wisconsin listening to whats on citizens minds, and i can pretty well typify it in one word and its been true for years security. But its not Just National security. It is job security, income security, its Healthcare Security fernando what have you done, since your election, a law, some initiative that has created jobs in wisconsin . Sen. Johnson first of all, ive been tireless in my effort to reduce the size of federal government and try to bring down these deficits. It is because of the 2010 election that weve put a break on an ever expanding federal government. So its because we were elected that at least the deficit has been reduced, which is good for Economic Growth. Its been difficult with president obama in office basically engaged in regulatory overreach. There was one ceo of a wisconsin paper manufacturer who i was talking to, who said that just four regulations are costing the manufacturer 12,000 per year per employee from just four regulations. So if youre concerned about income inequality from stagnant wages, look no further than the regulatory burden. We have been resisting this administrations regulatory over reach and overspending. That is what is harming Economic Growth. Its been difficult with obama in office to do the things we really need to do to get the Economic Growth thats going to provide the opportunities that wisconsinites want. So what we need is a successful 2016 election. Fernando well let me ask as we conclude on the political front there seem to a lot of analysis, or punditry, that says that republicans regardless of what they have achieved in their own office, will be impacted by the top of the ticket. That is historically the norm. Will you be supporting trump . Sen. Johnson i would say the same thing is true on the other side. Secretary clinton has more baggage than an airport baggage claim area. I intend to find those areas of agreement with our nominee, so certainly trump comes from Business World, so we will concentrate on Economic Growth. I think he would be a far better position fernando but senator, let me ask you a question because of your interest in homeland security. Yes, we have to secure the border. We have to strengthen our military fernando mr. Trump talks about contradictory things. He talks about essentially downgrading relationship with nato, which isnt good for homeland security. Giving Nuclear Weapons to japan and korea. As someone who is informed, would that enhance our National Security or weaken our country . Sen. Johnson i will continue to look for areas of agreement in terms of Economic Growth, National Security, defeating isis. I dont agree with any person 100 of the time. And what ive heard from trump is a level of flexibility, an understanding that for example his tax proposal realizing that , thats not going to be passed, you have to work with the house and senate. It doesnt surprise me as someone coming from the Business World hasnt got pat answers on all these complex policy questions. Hes going through daily briefings as reported in the , press. Give him a chance to go through those briefings and get all us a chance to communicate with him and try to influence his policies, thats whats going to happen if he becomes president. Fernando thank you so much. To put ron johnsons reelection bid in context, consider this. Republicans hold a 54 to 46 majority in the u. S. Senate. 24 republicans are up for reelection, along with 10 democrats. The democrats need a net gain of 5 seats in november to take control of the senate. Up next. Do you remember him in star trek, or as kunta kinte in roots . What Actor Levar Burton wants you to do, if you remember him at all. Then will Jimmy Kimmel Live , stage a president ial debate . Could this tweet be the ticket to talk with trump . Fernando do you hate remakes . So does levar burton, the actor many know from his role as Geordi Leforge in star trek, and from his renowned performance as kunta kinte in the Epic Television miniseries, roots. But the black lives Matter Movement and the impact of Barack Obamas presidency changed his mind. So burton turned from skeptic to producer with the hopes of starting another National Conversation on race. Nearly 100 Million People watched the final episode of roots in its original airing. Despite that success, levar burton says he and coexecutive producer, mark wolper, were told early on that new audiences couldnt relate to the original series. Levar he tried to show it to his children and while they watched they found it dated and they said it was their dads music. It didnt really speak to them. So mark recognized that if we wanted to share this story with a new generation we would have to translate it into a language that they speak. Never let them put the chains on your mind. Fernando this new generation comes to roots in the era of the black lives Matter Movement. In a time when an African American is the leader of the free world. Yet, the nations dialogue about race isnt where burton thinks it should be. Levar my hope is that we have that conversation in a civil manner with understanding. And absent of some of the factors of guilt and shame that tend to trip us up when we go down this road of discussing race in america and the impact that slavery and its legacy of racism still have on our society. Fernando while seeking a change in tone, burton has made clear that some brutal historical realities will be portrayed in the new series. Levar we have an oportunity in this retelling of roots to take advantage of a lot of the recent and updated scholarship. I think young people need to know that they do not come from slaves. They originate from a proud, sophisticated people that were subsequently enslaved, and that the dna that runs through their bodies is some of the best that the continent of africa had to offer. You must hear your name first. You are kunta kinte. Fernando for burton, history and spirit are combined in great storytelling. He cites roots, 12 years a slave, and birth of a nation, as vehicles for constructing a more complete history. Levar it is our storytelling, fernando, that has always provided the context as to who we are, what this human journey is all about. And roots is a prime example of how that story can not only help to entertain us, but to inform, enlighten, educate. That is the true power of storytelling in my view. Fernando the remake of roots premieres on memorial day, and will be simulcast over four consecutive nights on a e, lifetime, and the history channel. Hearst, the producer of our television show, has ownership interests in those cable networks. Coming up next. Hollywood and the president ial hopefuls. Thats how wild this election cycle has been. Whos backing who as celebrities put themselves in the political spotlight . Pick bernie and, the old guards salute. Who are these foot soldiers for americas fallen warriors . Fernando another plot twist in the president ial campaign story. Donald trump and Bernie Sanders agreeing to a debate before californias june 7th primary. Trump, appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live, said hed debate the democratic underdog if the proceeds go to charity. Sanders, conducting the negotiations via twitter, agreed with a simple message. Game on. Hillary clinton, the democratic frontrunner, has previously turned down sanders invitation to debate in california. Now, two stories about return on investment. First, candidates betting on celebrity power to pay off in californias primary. We are playing with a full deck. Fernando Hollywood Alisters joining candidates in the field. Hillary Clintons Campaign endorsements include some highprofile stars, like jamie lee curtis, george clooney, Leonardo Dicaprio and eva longoria. In other celebrity sightings, Bernie Sanders supporters include mark ruffalo, Woody Harrelson and rosario dawson. And donald trump has his share of famous friends. Kirstie alley, Charlie Sheen and former ted cruz supporter and duck dynasty star, phil robertson. There i am, his spiritual advisor. Thats how wild this election cycle has been. Fernando no ringing endorsements for the u. S. Governments return on investment when it comes to technology. In fact, your tax dollars may be needed for a major government upgrade. Why . Well, imagine working at your desk on a computer so obsolete that it could be classified as museum quality. Thats the state of affairs inside many Government Agencies according to the Government Accountability office. The gao says approximately threefourths of the Governments Technology budget is spent on maintaining old systems, including one using 8 inch floppy discs to coordinate the us Nuclear Emergency messaging system. The nonpartisan government report notes that money could be better spent on just buying new computers. When we come back, we honor those whove served, and those whose lives were lost in service to country. Send your thoughts and tweets to matteroffact. Tv. Check in on facebook or connect with our video site to view and share videos from all our programs. When we return who will you remember this memorial day . Fernando monday is memorial day. A day when americans remember those in the military who died while serving their country. In an annual ritual at Arlington National cemetery, american flags are placed at more than 360,000 gravestones. Its a tradition carried out by the soldiers of the 3rd us infantry, known as the old guard. A moving form of remembrance theyve carried out for more than 60 years. It was quite emotional, seeing all the graves and o honor the flags in t them. It means a lot to me, because were representing what they stood for, for us to have a better life in this great country. Take a moment and give a moment of their time to remember those who have given the ultimate sacrifice, because thats why were here. Its a great honor for me, and i take it to heart because ive had soldiers that weve lost in combat, so coming out here and honoring the ones before us who gave the ultimate sacrifice its amazing. Fernando to all veterans, and those serving today, we extend our grateful thanks. Im fernando espuelas. Have a great week.
