Still, officials told us when it comes to grass, dont let appearances fool you. Its part of what makes the uc Berkeley Campus special. The acres and acres of lush trees. In the drought, when brown is the new green, it seems lawns are too healthy. Weve cut back 50 on the irrigation on campus. Uc berkeley spokesperson tells us the grass is green despite cut backs in campus water usage over six months. One thing, they only water here at night. Water use on campus is down 5 to 9 since the governor declared the drought official. Its great. Were working hard to reduce our use more. Water use in residence alls is down 30 . It appears other state institutions will be more aggressive. Irrigation has been cutoff. And there are signs to explain why the grass looks bad. Some are doing more than others, certainly. Heather coolly says some water users are waking up to the seriousness slower than others. The governor asked for 20 . Some institutions havent gone that far. Well, we need to be doing it. Frankly there is no excuse. This is a drought. Its a severe drought. We need to step up. There is a plan to step up use so six of these lawns have been identified for removal. Abc7 news to tell us water had been flowing down more than 24 hours and called the city and the water department.
