Good evening, im ama daetz. The fire started about 12 30 this morning in a home in pittsburg. Near west 17th street. Cornell bernard is live in the neighborhood. Reporter we still dont know the names of the three women who died in this fire, but firefighters say this is a tragic lesson about working smoke detectors. They say there were several inside the house but they were missing batteries. Contra costa county firefighters are sifting through the rubble of this house after an intense blaze, which lit up the night sky. Three women living here did not escape the smoke and flames. They loved the lord. They were pleasant. She was just a nice woman. I just talked to one lady in particular. She was a wonderful woman. Neighbor says the three women were related. Adding to the tragedy is what firefighters found inside. Just a simple smoke alarm, the battery should be there but its gone. The fire marshal shows us one of three nonworking smoke alarms found inside the house. Sitting on the kitchen counter. Not only were the smoke alarms not installed on the walls but there were no battery at all. So these five dollar devices would have meant the difference between life and death. The fire jumped to the house next door but was quickly put out man. And his son live in a detached unit behind the burning house. My neighbor started banging on my door, and i thought he wanted something else, and i was like, man, whats going on, and he is like, its a fire, come outside your house. Come outside your husband. And i just rush for my son, and rap outside. Fire Officials Say the cause of the blaze is not considered suspicious but how it started remains under investigation. In pittsburg, abc7 news. Ama right now rescue operations are underway to help save hundreds of people trapped by colorados floods. The National Guard has rescued 1700 people. More than 1200 remain unaccounted for. Authorities hope many are just out of communication and are okay. Authorities say a sixth person was likely killed by the flood. An 80yearold woman who was trapped in her house is now missing and presumed dead. Sergio quintana talked to bay area volunteers who are now in colorado about the rescue efforts. A few members of the silicone valley chapter of the red cross are in the ground in colorado, helping coordinate a massive response to the disaster. I talked with one team member who just landed in fort collins, colorado. She said a thousand people are hoping to be evacuated by helicopter out of stranded mountain communities, bit rained again today which didnt help the efforts. Cant run the helicopters in the rain in this kind of weather. Its just too dangerous. So the people who are waiting to be airlifted have another night on the mountain. As the Disaster Response continues, Team Coordinators expect more california red cross volunteers to dedispatched to colorado, going to relieve other volunteers or set up shelters. The rains are continuing, so volunteers are bracing for the possibility of more flooding and an extended rebill rebuilding effort. Ama and as he said, rain could complicate the response in colorado.
