How big are they . Between six and eight inches long. Dark colored. Mangy looking. Not the rats you would want to hold. Reporter people in the neighborhood say the rat population boomed two years ago when work started on a new subway extension. Over here, they come out late at night. Reporter it is one of many construction projects. You see them scurrying around. Reporter we went looking for rats around the city and we found them all over the place. We found an infestation. Not only were there adults but babies as well. Once in a while, a couple now, i must have seen 50 of them. They were coming out like it was nuts. He isnt too worried about it spreading in the city because the city has an aggressive eradication program. What i know about rats is from experience. You wont know them unless you go out and meet them. Reporter he is the Senior Environmental Health inspector with the department of health. On average his department gets about 350 complaints a year. I went to the health department. Reporter he showed us what inspectors look for when they respond to complaints. Youve got rat droppings on this side and rat droppings on this side. Reporter it goes beyond the obvious. Being rat detective takes a keen eye. The rats fur is usually greasy, dirty and so on. So as they run along the wall they leave these streaks called rub marks. Reporter he looks for possible nests in trees. It is rare to see them on the grass running around. To determine whether or not there is activity, he with look for these telltale signs.
