Police shut the gate once they saw the lion under a park van looking scared and confused. Lot of activity. Its an environment that its not really used to with vehicles, the asphalt, concrete. Reporter a large crowd of about 300 people gathered. It was i guess it was okay. No one got hurt, you know. Reporter several hours passed before the Mountain Lion was shot with a tranquilizers gun. Hes identified as 46 m. Theyre the ones that captured the lion and collared him last year. The fact that he was found in the middle of the city last night doesnt necessarily mean hes sick or unhealthy. The drought may be causing his prey to become more bold in looking for new water and feeding spots. Youre going to see that because its food for them. When that happens, you have them following them into these areas. Reporter police say the Mountain Lion was calm the entire time and was released today on a wildlife area. The bay area puma project uses this map to track sightings in the bay area. Most of the location markers are blue. Those are unverified sightings. The green are confirmed sightings. But a pretty good number of them, as you can see. The fact that it was roaming a neighborhood is unusual. Most people never see a puma in the wild in their lifetime. Experts say you can protect your home by getting hid of plants that attract deer. Its also a bad idea to leave pets or pet food outside overnight. If you see a Mountain Lion, make a lot of noise, try to scare them away. Whatever you do, do not approach them, not even the kittens. A protective mother is probably not far away. Early earthquake Warning Systems already exist, but only a handful of researchers and agencies have access to those warnings. Today they gathered to try to figure out how to share those warnings with all of us. Laura anthony has the story. Reporter whether its a few seconds or as long as a minute, the consensus is its better to have a little warning than none at all when a big earthquake is about to hit. You can get under a sturdy table. You just removed whats most likely to injure you in an earthquake. Reporter there are sensors in place to predict earthquakes and deliver warnings, but very few researchers and agencies have access to the information. The idea is to get the warning to everyone. Is it the emergency broadcast system on television and radio, is it an app in our smart phone, i vote for all of the above strategy. Reporter Governor Brown signed a bill requiring the state to develop a statewide alert system, but the law did not come with any funding. Other countries like mexico and japan already have early Warning Systems that have proven effective in big events. Here, bart, alrdy gets the notifications allowing operators to slow or stop training. Youre going to get anywhere from a few seconds to maybe up to even as far as 90 seconds of warning depending on where you are. Three buildings at San FranciscoGeneral Hospital were briefly put on lockdown this afternoon after a loud noise was mistakenly reported as gunfire. They quickly determined there was no shooting. The hospital spokeswoman says that online rumors got out of control and no hospital patients were effected. The noise may have come from a construction project on the hospital campus. New details tonight on the death of a santa rosa woman in hawaii. She died on may 1st when she fell off a zip line Landing Platform in maui. She was an employee of the zip line company and were now learning that she was trying to save someone who was coming in too fast. According to investigators, she was not wearing a safety harness and fell backwards. She was able to hang on for a moment, but lost her grip sadly and fell about 150 feet to the ravine below. Neighbors are on the verge of losing their local hospital. Abc 7 reporter has more now. Reporter Doctors Medical center in san pablo could close as early as july. It would mean families and the elderly would be left without a local hospital. The only other emergency room is kaiser richmond. Other hospitals in the region would also be affected. We have displaced a number of patients coming to martinez hospital and it will overwell m the system. Reporter Doctors Medical center operates on a deficit. In the past voters have agreed to two parcel taxes to keep the hospital running, but this time, when asked to vote on a third measure, voters rejected it. We ran out of rabbits. And and unless short of a miracle, we are not going to have any option but to close the hospital. Reporter while its a public institution, its not operated by the county. It gets some money from local property taxes. But heres the problem. 90 of their patients are on medicare. The hospital cant survive on those reimbursements. In the case of medicare, we get 60 cents on the dollar. Reporter the county has spent the last seven years trying to bring in funds, but it too is giving up. We dont have the ability to take over an 18 million loss. It would just mean we would cut Health Services and Law Enforcement services which has a negative impact as well. Reporter the Hospital Board has spoken to other bay area hospitals about creating a partnership. But they too have declined. If i need to go find another job, ill go find another job. But i would prefer to stay. Reporter next month there will be a hearing to discuss the closure with residents. State and federal officials are now investigating a tree trimming and bird removal project that left some birds severely injured and some may have died. Abc 7 News Reporter nick smith has more now from downtown oakland. Reporter the vet helping this heron says he needed surgery. We really encourage people to do tree trimming in the fall and winter month. Reporter this heron and fou destroyed. Some of those injured birds were brought here, their only chance at survival. Some of them has scrapes. One of them has a fracture. Reporter the crews were under orders to trim the trees from the post office near the downtown facility. Thats in direct violation of state and federal laws. This is very serious. Reporter in a statement, a spokesperson with the post office told me their manager on the scene did not witness any action by the tree service that would have harmed any birds and that theres no evidence of any feathered massacre. They say the post office could have avoided the entire situation. We would have come up with a solution. We would have told you we cant do anything right now, but as soon as the last one flejs, well be here to help. Im so glad theres an investigation because the birds cant speak for themselves.
