Have been four similar incidents since september. The plant was one of three that was threatened of shutdown in september because of a salmonella outbreak tied to raw chicken. The Company Issued this statement. Foster farms closed the livingston facility immediately for sanitation and treatment. They added no products were affected by the infestation. Foster farms has shifted chicken production to its two fresno plants while the one in livingston is dealt with because of the cockroach infestation. Two engine workers were hospitalized tonight here in the bay area after an explosion inside the companys South San Francisco lab. The fire martial says some cleaning solvents were being used to sterilize equipment and a Chemical Reaction occurred. The engine building was evacuated while crews tended to the victims. One of the workers had burns to the face, the other had burns to the hands. The fire was contained to the area of origin and the room of origin. The chemicals they were working with are still inside the room. There was no danger to the public at any time. The explosion did blow out the windows in the lab, but none of the chemicals exited the building. There was a flash fire at the same facility back in may. Osha officials and the Seminole County District Attorney have investigated to see whether safety recommendations need to be made. We have learned tonight that three more people have been killed because of the flu in the bay area. Marin county Health Officials tell abc 7 news that two marin county residents have died from the flu and the third in sonoma county. Thats in addition, to, keep in mind, a new death revealed today in sacramento county. Yesterday we learned that a Contra Costa County woman also died from the flu along with a santa clarick county woman. In the meantime, one Bay Area Hospital is preparing for the east. Regional center in l. A. Has set up a tent in the emergency room. They took pictures of hospital staff preparing the tent. There have been such an overflow of patients in the emergency room that some have already been treated in the tent. Abc 7 News Reporter karen tyler has more now on how to protect yourself from the flu. Reporter if you want to protect yourself from the flu, wash your hands constantly and stock up on sanitizers and disinfectants. While the virus is commonly spread through people coughing and sneezing, there is another culprit that flu victim frank bossa knows. The phones in the conference room, elevator buttons. Reporter thats right, when sick people touch something that you come into contact with, watch out. The virus can survive hours on surfaces like that. Reporter dr. Spencer blackman is a family physician who highly recommends the flu shot to fight this seasons strain of the virus. Its one thats been around before. Were starting to see more cases of the same h1n1 strain that we saw back in 2009 which we know tends to affect kids and younger adults a little more predominantly than older folks. The good news is thats one of the strains thats in the flu shot this year. I should have gotten mine, but i didnt. I hope its not too late. Reporter dr. Blackman says its not too late to get a flu shot. The season peaks between late december and february. Ask and if youve already had a bout of the flu, his advice is to still get the vaccine because it contains coverage for multiple strains. In the meantime, wipe down that desk and wash your hands. We now have the first reported death from bird flu in north america. A canadian has died in alberta after traveling from beijing. He was infected with h5n1 bird flu. It rarely passes from person to person, but Health Officials said they were tracking everyone down who came into contact with the traveler to be certain of that. That strain has been slowly spreading and worrying Health Experts for more than a decade. Now we know there has been a death in north america. The lawyer for jahi mcmaths family says she has now had a tracheostomy and feeding tube since saturday night. Shes getting the treatment the family wanted her to receive last month when she suffered a heart attack and was declared brain dead following a tonsils surgery. The family says the tracheotomy and feeding tube took place at a new facility. Doctors are confident that her condition has stabilized and that her health is improving from when she was taken from childrens hospital. Neither dolan nor the family will say where jahi ising treated. A kidnapping of an antioch girl is facing a long list of charges. He admitted to abducting the 7yearold last friday. She was safely found after an amber alert was issued. Douglas had his First Court Appearance today. Six counts were filed against him with charges including kidnapping for sexual purpose and forcible lewd acts involving a child. His bond has been set at 7. 1 million. Some people in loas gatos ae arming themselves. You probably heard of the knockout game where people are sucker punched just for the heck of it. A woman was attacked at a mall in las gatos. The attack caught the woman off guard. One minute she was dropping off her daughter for a ballet class. The next people were come to go her rescue after she was punched to the ground. I went outside and saw the lady was signatures tting on th and she was crying. Reporter the speed of the attack even caught witnesses off guard. The description could fit many people. An africanamerican man about 56 tall, wearing a white tshirt and blue jeans and a white baseball cap. The students mother is recovering. Its really a shock. Its a really traumatic experience, and i think thats the emotional part of this. Physically shes fine, but thats basically it. Reporter the upscale las gatos community are now dealing with a crime that could hit anyone at any time. I think pepper spray is maybe a good idea, but if youre being sacrificed, youre not going to see it coming, so i dont think there would be enough time to react. They turned down an interview request, but in their news release they said they are investigating if this is the knockout game seen in other parts of the country. You see them loading him up on the ambulance. This chase began when the car was spotted just before 2 00 this afternoon. Police were finally able to stop him on interstate 880 near the coliseum, and he is tonight in police custody. There is a specific group of people, pedestrians, in danger of becoming victims of traffic accidents in San Francisco. Thats according to new information tonight from police. Abc 7 News Reporter vick lee has the story from city hall. Reporter the anguished cries of the mother of 6yearold sophia lu who was hit by a car new years eve. It was a terrible year for pedestrian fatalities. Mayor ed lee says more needs to be done to reduce the accidents. Ive got no less than three proposals on my desk right now that im reviewing this afternoon with the police chief and the fire chief on competent campaigns we could do now. Reporter in 16 people died. Last year there were 21 fatales. Onethird of those deaths happened last month. We had seven fatalities, pedestrian fatalities, in just the month of december. Police commander ali tells us most of those victims were asian immigrants. Many were elderly. Ali says the victims from asia may have been confused by our traffic system. Ive been told that traffic patterns there, they flow differently than the grid type patterns that we have here. And so people may be accustomed to a different type of traffic pattern. Reporter both the mayor and commander ali says there needs to be more bilingual campaigns to educate immigrants to the american traffic system. District attorney george gascone says not only drivers but pedestrians need to be more cautious even though they have the right of way. When you come up against a vehicle that weighs minimum 2,000 pounds, 4, 5, 6,000 pounds, youre never going to be in the right end of the outcome here. That happened just yesterday. George warren, abc 7 news. Well, conditions around the rest of the country are improving. The big freeze is about to thaw out a bit. A warmup is finally on the way after days of recordsending temperatures, brutal cold. Sheets of ice on the hudson river could be seen for miles. A ferry with no passengers on board gets stuck and had to be rescued by tugboat. There it is being towed. Take a look at this in atlantic city. The tropicana casino showed icicles on the side of the building. Some of these are as big as six stories tall. Airport terminals are slowly getting back to normal tonight. Led far fewer flights today, in fact, and slowly started digging out from the arctic temperatures. Around 800 flights were canceled today. Thats a lot, but compared to more than 4,000 flights on monday, not quite as bad. A plea tonight from the blood banks facing a shortage because of the arctic blast. The red cross says about 280 blood drives in 25 states were canceled during the extreme weather. And we can help offset that shortfall. Until today hadnt heard so much about the blood shortage because all the blood drives had to be canceled, but in some parts of the country, it was just too cold and too dangerous to go out. Its amazing how broad the effect is of Something Like this. We dont even think about it until we start to hear these reports. Even areas of extreme cold. Places Like Northern minnesota, subzero temperatures. This was an uncommon cold snap for them. Continuing dry winter pattern. Look at live doppler. You see a few clouds passing through right now, but no rainfall yet. We could get a sprinkle or two overnight, though. Heres a live view from our emery view camera. And a live view from our sso camera with a few clouds over San Francisco airport. Well see areas of drizzle in the Early Morning hours. There is a chance of light rain but measurable on saturday. And well see a much warmer weather pattern next week. Satellite image shows one little area of clouds having pushed through the bay area already, and a few more on the way. This is a weak system passing through. Its producing no rainfall yet. But there is some moisture traveling north that could move through in the overnight hours. A little farther out to sea, there is saturdays storm. It qualifies as a storm. It had to be a big one. Lets take a look at what we can expect overnight. During the overnight hours well see this weak system move through, bringing us perhaps a drizzly morning. There will be some areas of drizzle scattered around bait ar the bay area. Some wet spots for commuters but it wont be a significant rainfall. That will be followed by mainly sunny skies tomorrow afternoon. Our second one will be moving in on saturday. This one seems to contain a bit more moisture, a little bit more energy than the Current System thats approaching us. And well see measurable rain spreading down into the bay area by late saturday afternoon. It could be confined mainly to the north bay, but again, this is a chance of our first measurable rainfall in a long time, so that will be a big deal for us. Overnight tonight, no big deal. Temperatures will be low temperatures, mainly in the mid to upper 40s, and well see areas of drizzle in the Early Morning hours. Low temperatures up in the north bay. Valleys will drop into the upper 30s. Tomorrows highs right around 60 degrees on the peninsula. Mid50s on the coast and upper 50s in and around San Francisco. East bay 61 and oakland. Traffic in fort lee, new jersey just across the worlds busiest bridge from manhattan is dangerously gridlocked four days straight. Emergency vehicles, commuters, school buses. I just got there and it was piled up all wait bathe way bace street. I was like 20 minutes late for School Every Day for that week. Reporter today a series of emails and Text Messages said the fourlane pain was deliberately set by members of Chris Christies office who triggered this mess with one short order to the agency that runs the George Washington bridge. Seven little words time for some traffic problems in fort lee. Two weeks later, these cones mysteriously appear, blocking off two of the three lanes from fort lee to the bridge. The Ripple Effect is swift and dramatic. Cars back up for miles. A fourhour delay to get to manhattan and fort lee comes to a standstill . The police chief cannot believe it. Were starting to find out that people that are supposed to be protecting public actually impaired public safety. Reporter why did this happen . Fort lees mayor, a democrat who refused to endorse governor christie as he swept to a reelection on a bipartisan partnership, wondered the same thing. Those emails are pretty damning. A Statement Today in an apology, governor christie said what he saw today is unacceptable. He was outraged and saddenned. He was misled, he said, by a member of his staff. While the governor said he will not tolerate it, he did not announce any firings, at least not yet. Today was the third anniversary of the deadly shooting in arizona that critically wounded Gabby Giffords. A moment of silence outside the university of Arizona Medical Center where the injured were treated. A bell was rung 19 times, one for each of the victims shot. Giffords was one of 13 injured when Jared Lee Loughner opened fire at a public event that she hosted on january 8, 2011. Six people were killed. Meanwhile, Gabby Giffords marked the day by skydiving. She landed safely this afternoon at a skydiving site between phoenix and tucson. After completing her landing, giffords blew kisses and waved to the crowd of reporters standing by. And just before the jump, she tweeted this photo of herself and her husband, retired astronaut mark kelly. The caption reads, thanks for the good luck call. More than 1,000 gay and lesbian couples took home marriage licenses from county clerks in the past two weeks. The Governors Office says the marriage licenses will not be recognized while it appeals a legal union banning samesex marriages. This decision comes two days after the court brought a temporary halt to the marriages until the tenth Circuit Court of appeals consider the longterm question of whether gay couples have a right to wed in utah. Now we want to take you inside fukushima. Some people worry japans Nuclear Power plant may still leak radiation almost three years after that earthquake and tsunami caused a meltdown. There are growing questions about that contamination reaching american shores and the fish that we eat. Abc News Reporter cecelia vega tonight takes you into the hot zone. Reporter this used to be a Thriving Community of farms and fishing villages until march 11, 2011. Japans largest earthquake ever. The tsunami that followed engulfed entire villages, hitting the Fukushima Daiichi power plant and triggering a nuclear catastrophe. Two and a half years later, we gain access by land and sea to find out if fukushima is still a threat to the rest of the world. Near the plant, a 12mile stretch of teams with radiation hot spots. On the other side, ghost spots where time stood still. We suited up with radiation detectors to tell us when were in danger. We go to fukushimas ground zero to see the unprecedented cleanup under way. Though critics are skeptical, tepco is up to the task. The closer we get to the ruins of the meltdown, our detectors climb. It is a serious warning. Tepco tells us we can only spend one hour inside the plant. Any more time and we risk harmful radiation exposure. Radiation right here alone, about 2,000 times higher than outside fukushima. 1500 highly radioactive rods inside this pool. They have to move them outside this reactor to a safer location. It is a vital first step to shut down this plant, a process that will take 40 years. And heres what tepco says its doing to block the radiation from entering the pacific. Underneath this, there is a chemical barrier that prevents the water from flowing out. These steel tanks right here, another barrier, and that orange buoy over there is a silt sense in this area alone to keep contaminated water from going into the ocean. Will you ever know how much contaminated water has made its way from this power plant into that ocean . Tepco spokesman tells me its difficult to give an accurate number. So we joined a team of scientists on the hunt for answers. What they say they find . Radiation 1,000 times higher than before the meltdown, though its still below the legal limit for swimming and drinking. Can the damage thats been done been repaired here, or is it too late . Its not too late, he says, but japan cant do it alone. They need help from the rest of the world. And theyre not alone. We meet radiographer and expert ken. Radiation is contained in this small harbor outside the plant. But this team of scientists says they measured radiation leak to fukushima more than 70 miles away. Trace amounts of radiation have already been detected in bluefin tuna caught near california. Though experts say americans shouldnt worry. Radiation dilutes as fish migrate to the u. S. I think the fear of whats happening outside the local area is exaggerated. For americans to worry about swimming on our beaches when i can swim here to eat our fish when not too far from here the fish rumor is overblown. But what about the damage we cant see . Radiation on land and in the ocean that could be japans invisible enemy for generations. Cecelia vega, abc news, fukushima, japan. There is concern tonight right here in the bay area about radiation from fukushima. A man placed a video on youtube showing a Geiger Counter with four times the level of radiation. But there is no sign of cesium used in the reactors. Levels at the beach are high but are naturally occurring, they say.
