Officers forced their way in and were confronted by two men. One was subdued. The other man was armed with an ax. A taser was deployed. However, it had no effect on the suspect. Reporter the chief says the man dropped the ax but quickly rearmed himself with it. And it was not until he began to threaten the officers with the ax and began to advance on the officers that the officer was given no other choice than to discharge his firearm in defense of his life. Reporter the man died later at a hospital. Police say he was mentally ill. With a long rap sheet of violence, weapons, and drug charges. Hed once been committed to a mental institution. This is our sixth officerinvolved shooting this year. And what ill tell you, that all six have to do with mental illness. That is concerning to me. Reporter this man says his friend had problems. He meant no harm. He always talked crazy, but he was a gentle soul. Reporter the officer who fired the shot is a twoyear veteran of the force and had received crisis intervention training to help defuse conflicts with the mentally ill. In san jose cornell barnard, abc 7 news. A shooting rampage today in rural mississippi has lecht eight people dead, including a sheriffs deputy. The accused did notman, willie corey godbolt, screamed and shouted as he was taken into custody by authorities in lincoln county. Authorities say he was angered by his wife who wanted to take the couples two children away from him. The wife and the daughter were killed in the rampage. The fallen deputy died while responding to the shooting. Tragedy strikes a navy s. E. A. L. Parachute team at new yorks fleet week.
