Donald trump faced off for a second debate with Hillary Clinton. Hes been in a nose dive after lewd comments he made in 2005 became public. But tonight he fought back. We begin our Team Coverage from st. Louis. Good evening from washington university. If you were looking for fireworks, you got them. For two days donald trump has laid out his debate playbook making it clear that he thought that bill clinton was not only fair game but a critical part of this election. The key question is would trump hold his fire like in first debate . The answer came quickly and the personal attacks did there. Straight out of the gate, the tension was clear. No handshake between the two bitter rivals. Donald trump under fire for that 2005 audio recording with his crude comments about women. This was locker room talk. Im not proud of it. I apologized to my family. I apologized to the American People. Hillary clinton with days to prep her response saying trump is not fit to be president. I think its clear to anyone who heard it that it represents exactly who he is. Reporter and then 15 minutes in, trump goes nuclear, accusing former president bill clinton of sexual misconduct. If you look at bill clinton, far worse. Mine are words and his was action. Reporter Hillary Clinton not willing to engage. I am reminded of what my friend, Michelle Obama, advised us all. When they go low, you go high. Reporter the two candidates battled it out over clintons emails and private server. Its just awfully good that someone with the temperament of donald trump is not in charge of the law in our country. Because youd be in jail. Reporter and trump defending himself against reports that he may have avoided federal taxes for nearly 18 years. Did you use that 916 million loss to avoid paying personal federal income taxes . Of course i do. Of course i do. She complains that donald trump took advantage of the tax cut. Why well didnt she change it . Why didnt you change it when you were senator . Back to the battleground. Hillary clinton campaigns in ohio while donald trump is next door in pennsylvania. But no doubt tonights debate will loom large over the campaign trail. Karen travers, abc news, st. Louis. Before the debate trucmp launched an offensive. He took the stage with several women who accused bill clinton of rape and sexual assault. Mr. Trump may have said some bad words, but bill clinton raped me and Hillary Clinton threatened me. I dont think theres any comparison. Todays impromptu News Conference comes after that taped conversation featuring trump emerge on friday. We continue our Team Coverage now on tonights debate with reaction from young bay area voters. Sergio quinn tad da is in our newsroom. What did you hear . This was an hour and a half long slugfest that was unprecedented in many ways. Likely the most brutal televised president ial debate weve seen. It was felt by everyone in the room at the watch party i was invited to in oakland. Through most of the debate nearly everyone was shouting at the big screen or trying to figure out which direction the subject was going. To be clear, this is a roomful of people who either supported Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders in the democratic primaries so they likely werent going to be swayed but they still were affected by the tenor of the debate. The lesson for me in this debate is be careful what you wish for. I think oftentimes we want to see a slugfest, we want to see them go after each other. Tonight we got to see just how ugly that can be and it didnt taste good. Donald trump tonight really needed to reassure the Republican Party that he could hold on with his fingernails to this nomination and somehow keep the Party Together going forward. Im not sure he accomplished that tonight. Reporter she says this was likely the worst week for Trumps Campaign after a bombshell video was released by the Washington Post on friday. In it he was heard making lewd comments about women. Several key republicans have since called for him to step down and theyve pulled their endorsements. It remains to be seen if tonights debate has any effect on his campaign. Live in the newsroom, im sergio quinta quintana. The gop base he needs to remain on his side, did he say enough tonight to keep their support . Live in menlo park with that part of the story. Melanie . Reporter we did meet a couple of undecided voters here tonight. Donald Trump Supporters told us that he still has their vote while some selfidentified republicans told us trump never had their support to begin with. Take a look at this viewing party. They were about 20 people here at this gop viewing party at a restaurant in menlo park including san mateo young republicans. The crowd listened quietly and intently occasionally reacting as you see right there especially during statements regarding Hillary Clintons email server and those deleted emails. The big topic, of course, going into this debate was the leaked tape with statements that donald trump made about women in 2005. I felt if anyone was somehow shocked by these comments, i think people are naive. Donalds character has always been kind of on his sleeve. I would really have liked to hear more issues actually addressed by both of the candidates. I felt like there was so much deviivisive rhetoric, a lot of political theatrics and kind of dodging questions. And i think the American People deserve to hear real views on real issues is. Honestly, looking at the candidates, im looking at Supreme Court choices. As someone who is more conservative, i want someone whose choices are going to be conservative judges on there protecting civil rights, gun rights. Reporter the question everyone seemed to like was the final debate question, what trait if any did each candidate appreciate in the other . Clinton saying trumps children and trump calling clinton a fighter who doesnt quit. This was a positive question with a positive response that everyone seemed to appreciate after a contentious debate. Live in menlo park, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. Her running mate was in San Francisco for a private event. Virginia senator tim kaine flew into the bay area late this afternoon. Cnn reports that he is now making most of the fundraising appearances while clinton prepares for the debate. He headlined 42 events in september raising about 24 million.
