Okay i was born in louisville, kentucky, and my grandmothers house was near the gym where a then cassias clay worked out. I was 4 years old the year before clay would win his gold medal at the olympics in 1960 so he was 17. He would jog past our house every day and we would lay in wait as he passed we would run behind him like the pied piper. Now this is a very segregated city at the time so we were not allowed to play with our neighbors who were mostly black. So here are white and black kids running behind clay and even at 17 years old he was bringing different races together as one. I didnt really understand why we couldnt be together with our black neighbors at that age but for that 30 seconds running behind cassias clay we were all one. Now with his passing last night, most nba players were too young to remember what he did for the africanamerican athlete in all sports. He opened doors that had been shut for decades. He stood up for what he believed in at a cost that no one athlete would step aside for today. He was global before social media ever existed. He is the greatest of all time and he was the greatest of all time because of what he did outside of the ring. Obviously we knew how great of a boxer he was, but i think that was only 20 of what made him as great as he was. Ali was the example of how you use your platform and speak what you believe no matter what people say. He gives look to him as a sense of confidence in that regard for sure. Eric, i called my mom to confirm years ago that it was in fact cassias clay. She received yes. But never knew i would leave the yard for a block or two and run back. He was already becoming a legend at 17 years old. Youre lucky you didnt get stung like a bee for leaving the yard. Yeah. I would have had to pick the branch off the tree to get stung like a bee. Ah, the good old days. Shu,ing thises. Next up, a fascinating piece of history going up for auction. A former president s love letter written to his mistress.
