Tonight, a direct hit in haiti, slamming ashore at 145 miles per hour. Hurricane matthew is a category 4, a massive amount of rain. Rivers of mud filling the streets, and look at this. People trying to get to higher ground. Tonight, the new track just in, showing the hurricane coming even closer to the american shoreline, from miami, up through charleston, wilmington, norfolk to new york city. Meteorologist ginger zee is standing by with the timing of it all, but we begin tonight with abcs linsey davis in haiti. Reporter tonight, the most powerful hurricane to hit haiti in more than 50 years is causing this is matthew please pray pray for us we are right underneath it right now reporter matthew made landfall in western haiti just after 7 00 a. M. , with winds of 145 miles per hour. The category 4 storm, now 700 miles across, but traveling slowly at just 9 miles per hour. Winds continue howling across the island and the rain, devastating. At least seven have been killed in the region. Decision to cross raging floodwaters. This bridge connecting the southern part of the island to the capital city collapsed. While this river threatens to destroy yet another of the few bridges leading to portauprince. You can see the river absolutely raging. Its already 15 feet higher from where it would normally be, and still, it continues to rise. Concern is so great that police have closed down this bridge so people who are in this village are unable to make it to portauprince by car. The poorest country in the western hemisphere, illequipped residents here still reeling from the 2010 earthquake. After the earthquake, thousands of people built their homes here on this hillside. They have no running water, no electricity. The real concern now with all this rain, mudslides. Another danger . Tornadoes like this one caught on camera east of here in the dominican republic. Matthews wrath is now being felt in cuba as it tracks north. This man says the waves were so loud, they woke him up. The storm surge has already destroyed this home. David, matthew continues to wreak havoc here in western haiti, the hardest hit part of this island nation. This downed tree tells the story of the sheer power of the hurricane. Its going to take at least a week to restore electricity to this area. Linsey davis leading us off from haiti. Linsey, thank you. Here in this country, meanwhile, authorities sounding the alarm in several states, with the potential path now from florida all the way up to new york. Already. Millions stocking up after being told to prepare before its too late. Abcs gio benitez in florida tonight, where there are hurricane watches up already. Haley ordering all coastal residents to begin evacuating tomorrow. Wherever you are on the coast, we want you to get 100 miles away from that. This one just seems so big. And its really heading our way. Reporter officials warning, prepare now, before its too late. Right now, the message is, be prepared for Tropical Stormforce winds on thursday. Make sure you have food and water for three days. All of south florida is stocking up. Reporter residents in broward county, florida, taking that warning seriously. This is crazy. The last hurricane to hit florida was wilma, back in 2005. Thats 11 years ago. So many new residents here in the state since then. Theyve never experienced a storm like this. Where is this right now and where is it headed . Reporter Hurricane Matthew is right there on the satellite image, just north of the eastern tip of cuba. The bahamas is its next target. Miles per hour. We have hurricane warnings for all the bahamas. A hurricane watch that goes from central florida, right there to miami, and the Tropical Storm watch into the northern keys. David, i want to time this out for you. East of nassau it goes by 12 00 a. M. Thursday. Then, by thursday noon, florida starts to see those outer bands make it onto and from Hurricane Matthew. So, thursday at noon, potentially affecting florida. Now take us through the timing hour by hour up the east coast. Reporter right. So, as this storm parallels, it is a very strong storm, im talking 4 to 3, category. Look at the wind speeds, 130, 115 miles per hour. As it hugs the coast, it goes right up through charleston, look at the timing there. Saturday, 2 00 p. M. Its between south and north carolina. Then heads east of new york city by sunday. These are the steering factors. Tropical storm nicole developed today. That could edge it westward. That strong ridge is steering it more westward. But that incoming front should help squeeze or funnel it right along the coast and hopefully away from the northeast and new england. Most important here, even if it make a landfall does not mean that you wont see huge impacts. All right, ginger zee with us again tonight. Ginger, thank you. In the meantime, we turn to another disaster this evening, the one that rocked a new jersey neighborhood. An emergency call, concerns over gas. 22 minutes later, the massive explosion. Two homes shattered into pieces, catching fire. And if you look to the upper right right here, one of those homes in the neighborhood with a surveillance camera capturing the explosion. Well, tonight, those 22 minutes were lifesaving. Abcs eva pilgrim is on the scene. Reporter tonight, a violent home explosion. Battalion one to dispatch, we just had an explosion of the house. Reporter the first call to the Fire Department coming in just after 9 00 a. M. We got a gas leak in the house, from the basement. Reporter crews onscene in patterson, new jersey, within four minutes, starting evacuations. We knew by the hissing, you could hear, that obviously it was a high level of gas leaking. Reporter the 11 people inside getting out safely, just before this happens. Two multifamily homes leveled. Homes. And as you see, this is a piece of the house. I was over there. This thing went over my head. Reporter but unlike this 2015 new jersey house explosion that left two utility workers critically injured, remarkably, there are no serious injuries tonight from this massive mess. If this happened 15 or 20 minutes before they got everybody out i dont know what would have happened.
