Come to fruition you will have in gratitude right expectations create in gratitude if here is look if what you expect if If what you expect to happen happens you're not going to be grateful because you expected it to happen if it doesn't happen you'll be an ungrateful and since ingratitude is a guarantor of unhappiness expectations are a guarantor of unhappiness now why do I say this is controversial and runs against what a lot of Americans think. Well 1st I know it's controversial because it bothers people and I have talked about this if you can example I have spoken about happiness to businesses for example people will then get up and I now incorporated in my speech because I know the objection that I will hear Mr Prager you say that we should not have expectations but we are told here at work you must expect to make that sale otherwise you'll never make it so I say to people but wait a minute let's be let's be honest how you can't all make that sale. That sale is going to be made by only one of you it's not possible it's and I give the analogy to baseball All right so here's the question Should every player in April let's say let's say this baseball season starts April 1st should every player how many major league teams are there 30 there right 30 around 30 What's the difference should every player on all 30 teams start on April 1st with the expectation that he will get to the World Series or when the World Series for that matter let's listen a very important question will you do better if you expect to win and that's that's the question to so here is by answer whether or not you will be more likely to get to the World Series if you expect to get to the World Series that is a very interesting psychological question that is it's a very interesting question if you expect to do x. If you have no desires then there's very little to be achieved in life I don't only mean on a personal level I mean I want I desire to conquer conquer cancer and cancer will be conquered in the western world not in the Buddhist world and there's a tremendous amount to learn from but isn't I just gave you an example but desires are a very good thing if there are good desires and if you have bad desires obviously it's a bad thing. So I didn't drop desires I have I've always had desires and I continue to when. I defend them. But I did it up the expectation thing then remember expectations are not the same as goals. I'll tell you why I don't do that even though I think it's a perfectly admirable way to live life I would say you have to learn how to live with disappointment but I don't think you are the expectations part help and in any event because of the gratitude issue because what Austin just said is very intelligent by the way as I said but what he just said is appropriate but it's appropriate for those who have disappointment he had he have solved he has as it were solved the disappointment problem but I have a different problem or an additional problem with expectations it's the non disappointment problem you won't be grateful if you expect things to happen and they do My problem with expectations is not that you will is not a low it's 50 percent if the expectation is not does not come to fruition 50 percent of the problem of expectations is if the expectation does come to fruition if you expect to be healthy tomorrow and you wake up healthy tomorrow why would you be grateful I expected to be healthy that's my point so Austin's Austin may solve 50 percent of the of the issue but the 50 percent is still remaining What do you do when the expectations do in fact pan out.
