Good friday morning to you. Thanks for allowing us to be a part of your friday kicking off the weekend. Im marcus washington. And im laura garcia. Were going to check in with kari in a moment. Mike has been busy following a serious accident. Someone lost their life as a result of this crash, the coroner is yet to get on the scene, so we may be looking at this entire 6 00 hour with this closure. Let me show you what were talking about with the arrows. The crash above here flashing lights blocking the hov lane coming off of the berkeley curve. You see it flared off here. Even if you werent going to use that hov lane, the flares are slowing people and that traffic has to shift everyone who was carpooling into that jammed up curve as well. The backup quickly formed in the last few minutes, all the way back past university toward golden gate field, thats a huge issue where you expect friday light traffic. The rest of Contra Costa County is moving lightly. A new incident some issue on highway 84 cutting through livermore. Use the dublin interchange instead of 84 cutting through. Well bring the update on that one coming up. Lets get a live look in dublin as the sun comes up this morning. It is a nice clear start and going to also be a very nice day in the upper 50s this morning, as you head out the door and light jacket needed and then take a look at the trend thats going to quickly warm up as we go toward late morning into the afternoon. Going into the low 80s by 1 00 today, eventually making it up to 88 degrees. Our temperatures will be cool near the coast and still really hot for the inland valleys, reaching up to 97 in santa rosa, and 77 in hayward today. So well talk about the weekend, thats coming up in a few minutes. Well check back with you. Developing now in watsonville, federal investigators trying to piece together a deadly midair collision involving two planes attempting to land. It happened yesterday afternoon. Happening today, the Governors Office is demanding a response from the city of oakland over its handling of a large homeless encampment. Up to 300 people are living in the wood street camp located on cal trans property under a stretch of 880 in oakland. Critics point out its been the scene of several recent fires and a judge recently held up the plan to clear it out because housing has not been made available to those living there. Yesterday the Governors Office sent a scathing letter to oakland city attorneys saying the city received a nearly 5 million grant for this very issue and its shirking its responsibility. Heres a response from oakland mayor libby schaaf. We are working hard with cal trans to utilize that grant in exactly the way that we promised and that is to help house the people at wood street. The state asked for a response by the end of the day today and says its possible that grant money may be pulled. It is another day of protests for Mental Health care workers that are organizing a march and rally in oakland. We want to give you a live look outside of kaisers santa clara facility. You can submit your photos to its website through september 25th. You need to get that desert kind of look going. Meteorologist kari hall joins me now. We got an update on the Drought Monitor yesterday. Its not looking very good. Its not looking good not only for california but all across the west. This is the worst drought weve had in 1,200 years. Its been going on for 23 years with some of the dark reds the exceptional drought, the highest level over the Central Valley with we have our agricultural landnd also where some of our largest reservoirs are. As we look at some of the water levels,e look at lake mcclure, a lot of the reservoirs are only a quarter of the capacity or just slightly higher. Only a couple are at about half of its capacity. So every single drop counts and weve been really stressing water conservation, because here we are in the middle of august. Our water season doesnt get going until about october, so until then, we may not see a drop of rain that could really help out and give us some relief from the extremely dry conditions. Well talk about the heat in our forecast, hats coming up. Mikes been following some breaking news. This is the berkeley curve, folks, listen up. If the bay bridge is on your drive and youre coming out of berkeley, emeryville, richmond, we have this crash blocking your hov lane but its a deadly crash so theres an investigation and we have to wait for the coroner to arrive on scene and do their part as well. These flares here are additional distraction, one lane blocked out of emeryville and off of the berkeley curve, jamming up traffic into the berkeley curve starting back here, getting worse as you saw happen on the sensors from golden gate field. From highway 4 through all of this, the jam mostly here, its over a half hour now and thats really slow and unexpectedly long as far as the drive for friday. Now most of the rest of the east bay is moving smoothly. Highway 4 we have a crash thats clearing out of antioch. Pittsburg and bay point seeing more traffic but the big other unexpected slow drive is for highway 84, the crash i found out is going counter commute but you know vallecitos roadway, we have a distraction because all the traffic is visible so crash eastbound distracts the westbound commute. Use the dublin interchange, its a longer but smoother and quicker drive. All month long nbc bay area and telemundo 48 are Holding Event for our clear the shelters adoption campaign. Yesterday we had some fun in the newsroom with little special visitors. We got to cuddle with adorable pets. My kids think we have the best job in the world. Were looking at the berkeley curve. Folks, if you are driving out of richmond, berkeley, coming past golden gate field, youre jammed from golden gate field racetrack all the way here to this crash that blocks the hov lane off the transition of the berkeley curve. Were talking about a deadly crash. Ill bring you some more details on getting it. Well put it together so you can figure out how long this might take, how much longer this might take as well. Well, good friday to you. Happy friday. Shares in bed, bath beyond sank again after that companys, one of the companys biggest investors sold all of its stock. It has been hot for the inland areas. San francisco still keeping the nice and mild weather. Lets take a live look outside in walnut creek, where were waking up to sunshine. This is where those temperatures heat up again, but take a look at the view along the coastline, where San Francisco you cant see the Golden Gate Bridge. We are going to see this fog rolling by for the next few hours and our temperatures do stay cool, as a result were in the upper 50s and watching out for that drizzle and that hard drive that you have coming out of the north bay, with low visibility. Were going to see some peks of sunshine but nice and cool. Looking for a cool event to check out this evening heres music on the square redwood city, upper 70s at the start where the band starts to play but as the evening goes along, you want to have a jacket because the temperatures will be cooling off. The heat has shifted inland, and it does still include Solano County, where we are under a heat advisory until 7 00 tomorrow evening. That extends into the Central Valley as well. Traveling around the bay area, we are still going to see the hot temperatures but you can see how much it cools down with a short drive. Dublin in the upper 80s. Upper 70s for hayward. Low 70s for san mateo, and upper 60s for Half Moon Bay. As we make weekend plans, expect more of the same with some of those hotter valley temperatures topping over 100 degrees, but then as you head toward the inner bay, oakland will reach into the low 80s and San Francisco will be in the low 70s for a high. On sunday, we all get a nice cooldown. Take a look at santa rosa reaching 85 and san jose up to 81 degrees with some upper 80s inland, but next week that heat just cranks right back up. We see purple on the map, that is some intense heat and some of thats going to start to edge its way into california, so well be watching that. Heres a look at your sevenday forecast. We have some 90s for today, upper 90s tomorrow, and then take a look at that dip on sunday, thats our day to enjoy more time out at the park, and then well see temperatures in the low 90s for the middle of next week while San Francisco stays in the upper 60s and low 70s. Mike, you have the big delays at the berkeley curve. Kari, the big delays now there because of a deadly crash. We dont want to forget about that. Were concerned about all parties involved here, though, and we also know that the Alameda County coroner who is en route to the scene has to get through the backup. Now look, the flares here are blocking that hov lane. The crossover is blocked and so do mind it, but all the closures in will be taking that closed area possibly using it as an alternate route to get to the scene faster so they can do their report and then hopefully clear those lanes. Were looking at a huge backup but well last until close to 7 00, if not beyond. Well give you the updates as chp continues to tell us about the huge backup that continues from university from golden gate field in fact to the bay bridge. The other issue is highway 84 eastbound, theres a crash, westbound the commute is backed up. The dublin interchange is a much better drive than highway 84. Everything else is a much better drive than either of those two spots. Back to you. Thank you, mike. Next on today in the bay, nbc bay area responds. Thousands of kids are going back to class, ready to learn, thanks to many of you. Im consumer investigator chris chmura. Ill show you how weve been supporting our schools and how you still can, next. Good morning. Today part of our campaign is reaching a heartwarming finish line. Well be out and about where students are picking up their backpacks, like this event we previously attended in san jose. This year, our partners at the nonprofit family giving tree set a goal of handing out 26,000 backpacks. We just got word, they will meet that mark and every single backpack matters. Its one less worry for the parents or the guardians of these students who may not be able to prioritize paying for this type of stuff, sending their kids to school with brand new backpacks and supplies, but for the kids, its just, its like christmas. These scenes are playing out at 150 schools around the bay area. You, our nbc bay area and telemundo 48 viewers, pitched in to make some of the smiles possible. You gave about 15,000 this summer. Thank you. You can still contribute online. Just snap this qr code to load our website. You can either pack a backpack virtually or make a cash donation. Either way, were grateful for your help supporting our schools. Ill be back on our midday newscast at 11 00 live from a backpack giveaway in concord. Ill see you then. I love the kids posing with the backpacks. Pretty cool. Next on today in the bay the top stories were following including breaking news on the bay bridge. Mike tracking the traffic backup. Im kris sanchez in watsonville, where federal investigators are on scene trying to find out why two planes collided, killing several people. Ill tell you what we know this morning. People died. Its sad. Its right next to my house. It could have hit any house. Right now at 6 30, two planes crash in the sky just south of the bay area. At least two people are killed. What happened in the air and the details were learning about the victims this morning. Why you may not want to throw out the expired covid tests. Youre watching today in the bay live on roku, amazon fire, apple tv, and online. Covered. Thanks for joining us on this friday, im marcus washington. And im laura garcia. Lets look at the San Francisco bay. Nearly two decades after becoming paralyzed a former quadriplegic will attempt to swim across the water. His incredible tale of recovery and how he hopes to inspire others coming up in just a little bit. See how foggy it is out there. Absolutely. Right now mike is watching some breaking news for us, the bay bridge major backup there, the deadly accident. This is causing a huge problem because friday folks expect a lighter volume of traffic and an easier drive adding to the backup, the compounding traffic flow here atop of the screen, the crash is seen there flashing lights just above the arrow, were still waiting for the Alameda County coroner to arrive on the scene to clear this crash. The flares on the left side blocking the lane and distraction. The backup on the east shore freeway is 35 minutes and all the backup is on the map from golden gate field in carlson down to the bay bridge toll plaza, over there as we look at the crash clearing. Now the rest of the bay is indeed mostly friday light except for this one other crash in highway 84 as youre traveling between sunol and livermore. Thats a big backup. Folks are better off using that dublin interchange but we still have school today as well. And its the second or third day, depending on when they started for a lot of kids in san jose and we are waking up to clouds, probably still excited its friday and well see the temperatures in the low 60s to start and at pickup time, its going to be so nice and comfortable with some low 80s in the forecast, that pickup time, take a look at all of our microclimates today from mid60s at Half Moon Bay to upper 90s in santa rosa and well see those temperatures kind of in between depending on your microclimates, so well talk about all of the events going on this weekend, coming up in a few minutes. Well check back with you, kari. 6 32. Developing this morning in watsonville, investigators continue to be at the site after a deadly midair crash. This happened yesterday in the middle of the afternoon. One of those planes exploding in a fireball. Today in the bays kris sanchez is live for us near the airport, and kris, what with b investigators, are they any closer to getting answers why this happened and how . Reporter well, it is still very early in this investigation, and while you can see that it is foggy, where we are here at the Watsonville Municipal Airport right now, when this happened about 3 00 yesterday afternoon, it was all sunshine and blue skies. A lot of unknowns right now. We dont know who the people were on board those two planes, nor where they were coming from, but central investigators both from the faa and from the ntsb are out here trying to get answers. I want to show you some Surveillance Video in a moment, but First Responders did surround the wreckage of one of those planes to try to extricate at least one victim, according to the faa, one person was on board a single engine cessna 152 and two people on board a twin engine cessna 340. The two planes crashed into each other, and then to the ground, as they were attempting to land here at the airport. Heres what it looked like from a nearby surveillance camera. You can see smoke and some flames there in the corner. One witness told us what it looked like from the ground, too. I saw in the blink of an eye another plane in the air and they hit each other, and it was almost as if the faster plane had gone right through the smaller plane. Reporter now it is too early to say what went wrong but we do know that the watsonville airport is a small, uncontrolled airport, meaning there is no control tower to direct the pilots so its up to the pilots themselves to clear for landing. There is a neighborhood very close to where one of those planes went down, but fortunately no one was hurt on the ground, but again, at least two people died in this crash. Perhaps one more. In watsonville, kris sanchez, today in the bay. All right, kris, our thoughts are with those families. Thank you. 6 34 right now. And a few tense moments in one palo alto neighborhood. They were called in to safely detonate the grenade. New covid testing and the athome test kits. You may want to take a second look before you throw any expired kits away. To check if the test kit you have are still usable, all you need is the lot number that is printed on the box. Also developing this morning, bay area researchers need your help in learning more about long covid. Uc San Francisco, the San FranciscoHealth Department and San Mateo County health are trying to work to better understand the impact and what causes it. Theyre reaching out to people who live in san mateo and San Francisco counties from all backgrounds who have had covid at least three months ago. They especially want to hear from black, latino and Pacific Islander communities, all of which saw more infections and hospitalizations. The study will last up to four years. 6 35 right now. Lets take a live look out in San Francisco there. You can see the fog sticking around there, so it will be cooler. Weekend forecast, how is that shaping up for us, kari . Youve been monitoring that. How is it looking for us . A great weekend and the temperatures are going to be a huge difference from where you are inland to the coastline. Lets talk about an event happening in San Francisco, environment justice summit. I talked about this on tuesday, posted it on my facebook page. You can check it out hiphopforchange. Org. Its going to be a perfect day, upper 60s, a few clouds moving by and well also see those temperatures nice and comfortable, but if youre watching the game this evening, our giants are on the road, but there may be a rain delay. Theres a chance of thunderstorms in denver, so well be watching our tvs later to see whats going on with that. Here at home we have the fog india day parade and fair in fremont. This is happening saturday and sunday, and tomorrow well see our temperatures reaching into the low 80s. Its going to be bright and sunny. Stay hydrated and make sure you wear that sunscreen. If you plan to go to the beach this weekend, you also want to wear the sunscreen, too, in Stinson Beach its going to be up to about 70 degrees, where we see some of our warmer coastal temperatures for santa cruz as well reaching 77 degrees and it does get cooler on sunday as more fog moves in, and its also going to be quite breezy. If your weekend plans take you to napa county, its going to be really nice, just heating up during the middle of the day. Were in the upper 80s for today and 90 degrees tomorrow but sunday will be the most comfortable day of the weekend, and for south lake tahoe, we have temperatures headed for the low to mid 80s. Sunshine throughout the weekend and we no longer have that chance of the monsoonal thunderstorms, so it will be good out there on the lake. Mike has been polling that breaking news this morning. The huge backup if youre just joining us a deadly crash on the approach to the bay bridge only affecting the hov lane from the original report of that crash but been extended because of the need for the coroner to complete their investigation or report here just off the berkeley curve. The flared lanes will continue to back up. We see a shift in the traffic flow, people are starting to adapt as theyve been watching this in the morning trying to adjust their route. Taking the east shore freeway its 45 minutes from highway 4 to the bay bridge. The bulk of Everything Else is lighter flow, bottom two numbers. The bulk of the jam is from carlson top of the screen past golden gate field and then past the crash there. You can use san pablo avenue but better yet consider b. A. R. T. , no delays reported for b. A. R. T. Along the system that will take you under a pass over toward San Francisco. Were looking at the rest of Contra Costa County and thats a smooth drive getting over toward that area, that slowing out of antioch now two crashes have cleared over there at summersville. This is not yet cleared. This is eastbound 84, counter commute, but we know the area very visible in the westbound commute direction so that jams up 84, youll use the dublin interchange, its lighter traffic everywhere except for 84 where its jammed up. South bay peninsula no problem. Back to you. Thanks, mike. 6 38. Come up next, checks and balances. What are you working on, scott . I get the question, because congress is on recess. The president s on vacation but we are going to look ahead to the midterms. Lets look ahead to the big board out of new york city, mild sinking on the dow, at about 33,800. And look good, feel good. The act of kindness some bay area barbers will be offering students as they head back to school. Today in the bays Ginger Conejero saab is live for us in San Francisco with an incredible story and why one man is getting in the chilly bay area water. Whats going on here . Reporter it looks chillier than i could imagine. Good morning, marcus and laura. Swimming across San Francisco bay is not an easy feat, able bodied or not. Robert heitz doesnt scare early from challenges. At 7 30 hell swim from Alcatraz Island across San Francisco bay, and he says today is a culmination of a journey that started 19 years ago. Robert heitz was 22yearold when he was on board a boat in 2003 in lake michigan. Unfamiliar with the area, he dove head first into a sandbar and was rendered a quadriplegic. These are xrays of his injuries. Three years after his accident and a lot of physical therapy late, he was able to regain function of all four of his limbs. He was back at school studying biomedical engineering. He was driving and he was fully functional. Fast forward to today, heitz takes on a new feat, in a couple of hours hell swim from Alcatraz Island all across the San Francisco bay. He says hes always been a strong swimmer and today hes claiming his place in the water where his injury happened. Hes doing to to raise awareness for the paralysis recovery foundation, an organization he founded after his injury. Heitz trained for this since january of last year. As you can imagine, todays journey is deeply personal. Its going to feel like the culmination and a real recognition that, rob, you did it. You went from quadriplegia, you felt you never were going to get out of and really believed your life was over to now doing something really amazing. Reporter now rob tells us he chose alcatraz for its imagery and what it represents for him. He said when he was a quadriplegic he felt he was a prisoner in his own body. Today he escapes that. Theres also special significance to the fact that today is august 19th. Its almost 19 years to the day since rob first suffered his injuries and hes been training for 19 months to escape what he said was a prison, being a prisoner in his own body. So much symbolism for him as well. Lucky number 19 i guess. Were certainly rooting him on, from the shore. From the shore. Its cold out there. Could you hear the foghorns behind. Its so San Francisco. I remember living there waking up to that and the seagulls. And so cold. Lets look at whats going on, especially in the water, oh my goodness. We cant even see the Golden Gate Bridge right now. Wow. Well take your word for it. Drivers have to go through that this morning, coming in from the north bay, we also have some patches of fog, but as you make your way inland, its all clear, and we are going to see that causing a big range in our temperatures for today. Take a look at dublin, its bright and sunny, 58 degrees, and as we go into the rest of today, those temperatures start to heat up quickly and its going to be pretty much like yesterday. It was so nice during the afternoon, well be at about 80 degrees at 1 00. The sevenday forecast is up at the bottom of the screen if youre looking for something to do or if you already have tickets for the as game, its going to be really nice out there. At first pitch at 6 40, it starts out in the 70s but drops down to the mid60s by the end of the game. So make sure youre wearing those layers. And we still do have the dangerous heat today but it has shifted inland and it does include Solano County with the heat advisory, that continues for tomorrow. So if you do have outdoor plans, here or in the Central Valley, make sure that youre drinking lots of water and know those temperatures are headed back for the upper 90s and even over 100 degrees. Well see that in fairfield today and dublin sees a high of about 88 degrees but a short drive toward hayward at least ten degrees cooler for today and then in san mateo, its in the low 70s and upper 60s for Half Moon Bay and look at the north bay, 97 degrees but as we go into the day tomorrow, its still hot in the valleys and napa gets hotter reaching 88 degrees and then well see some triple digits starting to reappear on this map and parts of the trivalley as well as Solano County and then on sunday, we all get a cooldown so its going to feel so much better if youre thinking about when to get outside this weekend, sunday is your day. Take a look at this sevenday forecast, because we are looking at a big range in our temperatures from day to day. We get a cooldown sunday to monday, thanks to a stronger ocean breeze, keeping that marine air and carrying it into the inland areas. We dont see much of a change in San Francisco. We start out with clouds and fog but we will get some sunshine. Mike, what is the update of the crash on the berkeley curve . We have a bigger backup unfortunately because we have more traffic headed down through the area. The berkeley curve back here where the crash is, the deadly crash, the backup going into berkeley, albany and extending back in toward almost just out of richmond, where the Richmond Bridge is showing traffic backing up, some folks trying to use that as a relief valve instead of headed here. The update along the berke i can curve, the hov lane is still closed right here with this crash, the deadly crash that happened earlier this morning. Lanes are flared out but the coroner arrived on scene, likely having those lanes opening over the next half hour so well continue to track this, of course critical backup. The sad news is we lost a soul as a result of the crash near the bay bridge. Now no loss of life here, 84 but loss of time because the traffic is jammed up still. This crash coming away from 680 on eastbound 84. Its counter commute but causes the commute backup and so youll use the dublin interchange if youre coming out of livermore on 580. Everything else moving light on friday, south bay and peninsula included. Back to you. Thanks, mike. 6 53. Happening now, plans to build a costco gas station in novato are on hold.
