Thats the staggering estimate of the number of trees killed by bark beetles during californias drought. It led to millions of trees dying, and theres a glut of logs from these dead trees. Reporter most of the trees that crews have hauled off are burned unceremoniously in power plants. But in a back lot in west oakland, dead trees are finding new life. As art. Reporter building the annual temple for the burning man arts festival. This year the temple is special because its being built entirely from lumber that has been milled from beetle killed wood. Reporter pg e cleared away 300 logs up near yosemite and donated them to the temple crew. An oakland mill cut them into 3,000 boards. Once a tree is dead, its actually not suitable for commercial lumber production. Reporter but for a temporary temple in the desert, this wood is perfect. The temple is one of the primary structures built at burning man. It serves as a center for people to leave memories of people who have been lost.
