A developing story, more trouble for San Franciscobased uber. The embattled ceo is resigning. Pete suratos joining us live outside of uber headquarters this morning with the reason, pete, why Travis Kalanick is stepping down and what it means for the ride sharing giant. Reporter good morning to you, sam and laura. As you mentioned it have is kalanick stepping down as ceo as it deals with its fair share of controversy. He did step down tuesday night, and this was just after a week of taking a leave of absence to deal with the death of his mother who was killed in a boating accident but came at a time the popular Ride Sharing Company was under the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. Take, for instance, this video when kalanick argued with an uber driver unhappy about fare changes, telling him to take personal responsibility for his financial situation. And then allegations of sexual harassment, bullying and retaliation in the work place and management turnover as the company tries to work its way out of a series of missteps. In a statement from kalanick he says, quote, i love uber more than anything in the world and at this difficult moment in my personal life i have accepted the request to step aside so that uber can go back to building rather than being distracted with another fight. Now in a statement from board of directors, travis has always put uber first this is a sign of his devotion and love for uber. Hes taking the time to heal from his personal tragedy while giving the company room to fully embrace a new chapter in ubers history. We look forward to continuing to serve with him on the board. And as it says in a statement, kalanick will remain as a board member as the Company Searches for a new ceo. Were live in San Francisco, pete suratos for today in the bay. Thank you, pete. A vehicle hits and kills a bicyclist in san jose and now investigators looking into how this happened. A man riding his bike right near the library struck about 10 30 last night. That man died at the scene. The driver is cooperating with police. A chase in the south bay ends in a crash on a busy street. We first broke this story when we came on air at 4 30 this morning. It happened overnight. It ended at the interchange near the happy hollow zoo. Kris sanchez is live with what happened and what is left behind. Reporter were getting a better look now that the sun is up. On to the sidewalk here at roberts you can see where a light pole was sheared right off its base. The signal is on the ground. The pole is about 20 feet away. The spot where the car ended up is 50 feet away in a parking lot. We were able to confirm that the santa clara sheriffs deputies did take three people into custody but only after those three folks were treated by medical personnel here on the scene. The Sheriffs Department tells us they were in pursuit of a driver on story road but they havent said yet where the chase started nor why the chase started. Our crew got here just around 2 00 this morning. This is story road at roberts near Happy Hollow Park and zoo, about a football field away. Its also a park lot of what is usually a busy Walmart Super store. Fortunately the Walmart Store and the sidewalk in front of it not busy at 2 00 in the morning. We are still trying to work with the Santa Clara County Sheriffs Department to find out why the pursuit started in the first place. As soon as we find out that, well let you know. Still digging for more information. Kris, thank you very much. 6 05. San jose leaders yesterday do approve the start of the process of building googles mega complex in san jose. Here is what happened officially. The City Council Gave the city the okay to start negotiations with google for about 250 acres of downtown property. Google wants to acquire the parcels and build a it tech and transit vision near the station that would include up to 8 million square feet of office space. The mayor says the city will not offer any subsidies to the tech giant. Any sale of land would be a full, fair market value. The taxpayer will not be shorted a single cent. And, secondly, no subsidy of any kind from the city. But that does not assuage all concerns here. Some Community Groups are still worried about a potential surge in rent that could squeeze out lowincome workers. Those for the project say it is expected to create some 20,000 new jobs. At 6 06 live to washington, d. C. , where the call to see the Health Care Bill is growing louder. Republican leaders have agreed to release a draft of their plan this week. Republican senators have been getting hammered at angry town halls over health care and democrats have been complaining the bill is being crafted in secret, even some of the 13 republicans who are supposed to be writing the bill say they havent seen any details. Republicans want to vote before the fourth of july break, and they can only ait forward to lose two votes. Also the bill must get a score before the senate can vote. Back in the bay area a followup now as Contra Costa County supervisors have reportedly finalized a deal to he can panned the detention facility, approving a 95 million spending plan that includes 25 million out of the countys general fund. State grant money will cover the rest of the tab. East bay times reports supervisors heard a long line of opponents before they did decide to approve the plan. Some tough new rules to limit Greenhouse Gases from bay area refineries could be approved today. The bay area air Quality Management district is voting on those rules later this morning in San Francisco. The rules would cap emissions from chevron, valero, phillips and shell located in contra k s costa county. Lastminute changes to the rules have made them weaker. San franciscos conservatory of flowers kicks off a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the summer of love. Tonight the conservatory will unveil a light art installation. You can check out the artwork every night through october 21. There will also be a summer solstice concert tonight in golden gate park. Southbound 680, a smooth slow of traffic until you get to Sycamore Valley road. More slowing continues as that crash still reported there on southbound side heading into san ramone. The pattern for the trivalley and the Castro Valley, a little more slowing shows up suddenly the last few minutes. The bay bridge approach is moving well. [ sound of gunshots ] he was shot after he told police he was carrying a gun and had a permit. You heard that clip the officer asked him not to reach for his weapon. The officer was acquitted on all charges just last week. He says he opened fire because he believed castile was reaching for his gun. His girlfriend broadcast the aftermath live on facebook. The Police Department parted ways with the officer after the incident. His family plans to file a civil suit against the officer. It is 6 14 now on your wednesday. Demanding action, Community Members calling for stronger it tenant protections and it comes after families who live with federally subsidized hud housing complex were given notice the owners will not be renewing their contract. Looking at today what were forecasting the record high temperatures. It does not look like well set any new records even though it will be ex team extremely hot. The record is 104 degrees. Looking at livermore, very close. We should not break the longstanding record that was set in 1981. Now looking at our high temperatures today, reaching into the triple digits for the south county, the east bay well see some widespread temperature readings over 100 degrees. Half moon bay will be at 67. Well have 94 in palo alto. San francisco 80 in the mission district. And 90s in mill valley. The heat warning, the excessive heat warning, has been expanded to include more of contra costa and alameda counties. Also an area of marin county for the interior valley. We are going to see the high temperatures in San Francisco reaching into the low 80s by tomorrow and then cooling off in time for the weekend. Reporter when mike bates noticed his water heater was leaking, he called his Home Warranty company. The Company Approved the repair work over the phone saying mike just needed to send in the invoice for reimbursement, and thats what he did. The invoice was for 2,300 because the tech said the leaky water heater was beyond repair and needed to be replaced. But American Home shield denied the claim saying that mike didnt receive prior approval. The company said the tech was supposed to call them and explain the problem before starting work. Mike says that wasnt what he was told, so he reached out to us for help. We contacted American Home shield and it reimbursed mikes 2,300. In a statement American Home shield said we take great pride in providing quality service, and if we fail to meet these expectations we work to do the right thing. It is a voluntary call for people to conserve electricity during the day especially for those who live in dublin where its supposed to be getting extremely hot again. As the temperatures soar, so does demand for power. Take a look at your tv screen, the iso is estimating todays peak demand over 46,000 mega watts. You compare that to the record set in july of 2006 of just over 50,000 mega watts. To conserve elected trricity th is asking you limit your power usage between 2 00 p. M. And 9 00 p. M. , the time of the day it will be the hottest. Asking you to use your major appliances before or after those times so things like laundry, and set your air conditioning to no higher than 78 degrees and turn off any unnecessary lights. A man who killed his two Young Children and then himself on fathers day. We still do not know the childrens cause of death. The san it at that rsanta rosa examiners will perform the autopsies. His sister tells he was depressed over a custody battle and camara had asked her to write a reference letter to the judge. Custody issues, arguments, just everything all at once. He felt the whole world was coming down on him. The childrens mother has since released an open letter to the people of santa rosa and it says in part, quote, i sought help on numerous occasions and said many, many times my children were in danger in their fathers care, and i did not receive the urgent help i needed to save them. Police say the parents called authorities five times since april over custody issues, but that camara had never actually broken the law. Its heartbreaking. 6 35 right now. Some frightening moments near ucberkeley. The search it continues this morning for suspects connected to an Early Morning shooting. Campus police say the woman and two men were parked at grizzly peak. Three men walked up, demanded money. The woman was hit in the leg. None of the victims are affiliated with the cal campus. The woman will be okay. Good news right now for south bay drivers, major improvements heading to a huge stretch of bascom avenue and in campbell. The vta and officials from both cities have started to look at how to improve dangerous spots on the road. The bascom Corridor Study will be focusing on north bascom from interstate 880 all the way down to south bascom at highway 85. Thats a sixmile stretch of road there. That project is not expected to begin until later next year. That section is critical for a lot of commuters. People will tell you how this they foal about the road. Looking here, a smooth drive throughout the south bay. A nice, easy drive there, and to the Castro Valley area and in to the san mateo bridge. The problem here, we see the speed sensors, northbound 238, just about where we had the report of a disabled vehicle that may have cleared you seep the yellow develop as more cars are head iing past that scene. We still have this jammed south down to danville. That crash still looks like its affecting lanes of traffic. Thats the heavy slowing coming off the walnut creek interchange. The rest of your commute looking really good. I want to show you mass transit. No problems here. You want to think about that if youre heading to pride, over in San Francisco this weekend. Theyll have Additional Service for a lot of these areas as well and well get a live look at the san rafael area. The 101. Look at that sunshine. Its already hot. At least the traffic is flowing nicely. Always focus on the positive. It does already look hot, by the way. Thats a good observation there. No story this weekend but we do have gay pride as mike mentioned. A lot going on around the bay area, of course, as always, we have a look at that and also the weekend forecast. We are going to see those high temperatures along the coast much more comfortable at 72 degrees. It will still be very warm. In fact, hot. 96 degrees. But compared to the triple digits our temperatures will be coming down. Looking at sundays forecast for the coast it will be 69. 89 degrees for the inland valleys, and we talk about the pride festival happening this weekend. It is going to be amazing. Look at these temperatures. A lot of sun and low 70s. Well keep that comfortable weather throughout the day. Now it will be hot still this weekend in sonoma at the raceway as our temperature will be in the mid60s. Youll enjoy some comfortable weather until about noon. Thats when it starts to heat up and well be in the mid80s throughout the day. If you are planning to head further north the Russian River valley in the mid80s on saturday and 80 degrees on sunday which is a huge improvement over what well feel today. Looking at yosemites forecast, if you will be hitting the road, a chance of thunderstorms on friday but it does clear out for the weekend with our temperatures reaching into the upper 70s. Many people evacuated as rain and winds swept through the area overnight. The storm is taking aim at lake charles, louisiana, between houston and new orleans. Early saturday morning officers responded to reports of a fight involving up to 15 people at the gold coin motel. Police yelled obscenities. A hostile crowd then gathered. The city Council Voted to raise rates by 6 . That city over 3 to monthly bills. Not too impactful. The suicide bomber was shot by soldiers after detonating a small device. The man identified as a Moroccan National later died. No one else was hurt. Hundreds of students coming out for a candlelight vigil last night. In the meantime the question is how is the u. S. Going to respond to north korea following warmbiers death. He died after he was returned from north korea. He was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor for allegedly stealing a propaganda poster. President trump appeared to blame former president barack obama for what happened. Frankly, if he were brought home sooner, the result would have been a lot different. He should have been brought home that same day. The result would have been a lot different. Officials right now are looking at adding more sanction s on north korea and possibly banning americans from traveling there. The u. S. No longer relying on china to help tensions in the area. Lets start with that tweet. This can be interpreted as quite foreboding. While i greatly appreciate the efforts of president xi and china to help with north korea it has not worked out. China tried so we can infer a couple things out of this. The u. S. Is not going to rely on china as a mediator and as a go between. The u. S. Will take his own action from here on out. That is a mystery, of course, and implications as well. Remember, the are president has been trying to foster good relations so that president xi would help him solve the north korea problem. President trump even went back on a Huge Campaign promise to label china currency manipulator and then later said why would i do that . Why would i call them a currency man ipulator if theyre helping us . He now feels china is not helping us. The white house, the state department approaching it differently. The secretary of state is meeting with chinese officials about north korea. Other news coming out of the senate this morning, senators will get to see a draft of the Health Care Bill. There were complaints it was drafted in secret. Even some of the 13 members who were suppose d to be writing it say they havent seen it. Though ive been a member of this working group amongst Senate Republic assigned to help narrow the focus of this, i havent seen the bill. Reporter the Georgia Special election is over. The republican candidate won the seat in a close race. A defeat for democrats who had hoped the anger against President Trump would help them convert a very republican district. Yesterday i mentioned there was a special election in South Carolina as well. I dismissed it because the republican was sure to win, i said. The republican did win but it was a squeaker. Sean spicer said the president would have news this week about those tapes of the president he and form earp fbi director jim comey. Those tapes would either prove he was right, or prove comey perjured himself, or there are no tapes. The house investigation has demanded tapes no later than friday.
